Algebra

What is algebra?

Algebra is a branch of mathematics which allows us to express certain real-life and hypothetical situations as equations. Important algebra terms include variable, constant, and exponent. Algebra tutoring through Varsity Tutors will familiarize you with these and other important concepts, show you how to apply them correctly, and give you the confidence you need to not only succeed in Algebra, but to enjoy it, as well.

Why study algebra?

Algebra is a very old area of study that goes back as far as 1800 BC. Since then, algebra has provided mathematicians with many important concepts which have allowed other branches of mathematics (such as trigonometry and calculus) to develop into the math we use today. Algebra also provides an important introduction to the properties of the real numbers and the rules of equations. Since a mastery of algebra is necessary for the study of all math beyond arithmetic, Algebra tutoring with Varsity Tutors can really give you an edge in your future math studies.

Preparing for further studies in math isn't the only reason to study algebra, however. Many people study algebra simply because of its practical value in real-life. For example, algebra is used in a wide variety of careers, including careers in the physical and social sciences, engineering, construction, sales, banking, business, marketing, computer programming, information science--even in some professions you might not expect, such as personal assistant and law enforcement agent! Still other careers may not use algebra on a day-to-day basis, but they often include algebra in aptitude exams which are required in order to apply for the position. Licensed positions and positions in the government sometimes require such exams. Algebra tutoring through Varsity Tutors can give you the refresher you need to score well on such tests and get the jobs you need and want.

Algebra is also very important because it's the other type of math besides arithmetic that we use most often in our personal lives. We use the ideas of algebra in doubling a recipe while cooking, figuring out discounts while shopping, and calculating payments before buying a home. In fact, you may have even felt the need for algebra without realizing it. For example, have you ever tried to solve a problem such as, "How many CDs can I buy with $50 if each CD costs $7.50?" If so, then you've tried to "solve for the x," which is the essence of algebra. The really useful trick about algebra is that you can take that real-life situation and turn it into an equation—"7.50x = 50"—which, if you know algebra, you can solve quickly and with confidence, instead of having to guess. Taking the guesswork out of common real-life situations (especially those involving money!) is a very good reason to study algebra, as well as another reason to consider tutoring so that you master such skills early in life.

Finally, algebra is the perfect subject to study if you want to sharpen your analytical abilities. As you can see from the example above, algebra will encourage you to tackle real-life problems and treat them as equations, which will teach you how to analyze problems and solve them logically. In other words, studying algebra will not only make you more effective in life, it will make you a better thinker! An experienced Algebra tutor from Varsity Tutors can help you make the most of these critical thinking skills at the very beginning of your studies in math, leading to continued success with math in your future.
