With more than 10 years of tutoring experience, I am adept in mathematics (elementary, middle school, and high school) and science. My on-the-job experience has also afforded me a well-rounded skill set, including first-rate communication and presentation skills. I excel at multitasking the multiple learning needs of each student, developing materials, reporting on progress, and managing educational time.I love playing with my three children and working with them. I like to keep up with my own reading and writing when I can, and I also volunteer to teach SAT mathematics (a subject in which I have a geeks need to study and learn more about all the time!). I have a new-found interest in art after teaching "Learning to Look" for my son's class. I've been known to race my students to finish math puzzles, I read whenever I can, and I like to participate in warrior dash races. In addition to my experience and personal qualities, I have a solid educational foundation and a passion for tutoring.

I grew up in Northeast Portland and got my Bachelor of Arts from the University of Oregon in 2007. From there I went on to teaching overseas in first Kenya followed by Nicaragua then Romania and lastly Japan. I knew I had a passion for teaching by this point so I returned to Portland and earned my Masters in Teaching at Concordia University in secondary level English Language Arts. I am now working towards adding an English as a Second Language endorsement. In each of the aforementioned countries, I have tutored students between the ages of nine years old to 47 years old. My daughter who is almost three, is my newest student. I am most knowledgable in tutoring English Language Arts and prefer elementary to high school grades and subjects. From my experiences, I know that hands-on learning that is relevant to the student is the best way for a student to retain information. I like to be creative with learning and get excited to use music, exercise, art, and the environment in my teaching for example.Outside of teaching I enjoy spending time with my husband and two young daughters, exercising, gardening, reading, eating good food, photography, dancing and enjoy outdoor activities.

My love for relationships and my desire to help the less fortunate or struggling beautifully melded together when I had the chance to take up tutoring in my sophomore year of high school. My most memorable tutoring experience consisted of working with an ESL student who was struggling with writing and English. Although I encountered obstacles in my teaching, I was constantly motivated by the fact that I could use my education, especially in areas that I am greatly passionate about (writing and literature), to help this student gain confidence in her learning abilities and get to a point where, instead of being discouraged, she could actually enjoy learning. I especially loved the moments when she reached a breakthrough in her understanding of a concept and was so happy that I had been able to use my knowledge to enhance her understanding and enjoyment of a topic. I tutored through out high school and continue to tutor in college as I help other students to realize their potential and achieve their goals.Beyond tutoring, I enjoy hanging out with friends, mentoring, going for runs, and playing music (I play guitar, piano, and am currently learning cello). I also love to read making my life as an English major quite enjoyable and one of my greatest delights is seeing a neat pile of the five different books I'm trying to read simultaneously all stacked up on my desk. I look forward to the great privilege of working with students and getting to know them both academically and personally!

I am a graduate of Virginia Tech University. I received my Bachelor of Arts in English and my Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction. Since graduation in 2001, I have worked in the education industry. I truly enjoy working with students of all ages. My passion is teaching English, Literature, Grammar, and Writing. I have experience working with students as young as the 3rd grade teaching summer school and intervention classes. I have also taught at the high school and Community College Level. The majority of my teaching experience has been with Middle School students in a classroom setting, along with after school tutoring and intervention classes. I feel very comfortable working with different age levels because I am extremely well prepared and able to differentiate learning styles. In addition, I truly enjoy watching students learn and achieve to their potential. I am an excellent tutor because I listen to the student's specific needs and establish a plan that helps the student fill in their personal skill gaps. I truly believe that every child has the ability to shine in all subjects. I think that tutoring help is a great way to supplement different learning styles so that students can build confidence and attain their goals. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, exercise, spending time outdoors with my dogs and being with my family.

My job isn't just to work with your child to help them academically; my hope is always to help students see how magical, fun, and powerful learning is. My 'day job' is in book publishing, and so I've perfected my approach to bettering students' understandings, enjoyment, and comprehension of what they are learning in their reading and writing courses. Incredibly well-read, I can help foster a love for reading, and an admiration for the written word. I look forward to work with you and your child on this journey.

As an English Language Arts teacher of 18 years, I have learned that students need to feel powerful in order to be successful. Confidence is everything. It is my duty to equip students with resources and techniques that will enable them to become life-long learners and productive citizens.Several of my students were not on level with reading, comprehension, and writing, and so I had to be creative in how I presented information and assessed them. At the same time, many of my students were in advanced classes who needed to be challenged and prepared as they relied on ACT/SAT scores and scholarships for college. It became second nature to differentiate my lessons and teaching in order to accommodate all of my different learners. Some of my successful methods come from my own experiences of being an at-risk student. I shared the steps I took in order to overcome odds and how to set and meet goals. I tutored during evenings and Saturdays. I encouraged students to come in for help during my lunch and planning periods and permitted them to sit in my classes during their study halls, free periods, etc. When students' needs are met, they feel empowered to accept opportunities and ultimately transform their dreams into reality. Every student deserves the right to be heard and taken seriously regardless of his weaknesses or needs. I am excited to help your child reach his educational goals and become more motivated.

I am a graduate of Amherst College where I received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Spanish Literature. Since graduating I've worked as a paralegal in a corporate law firm and a freelance translator. Before that I worked as a teacher during my summers in college instructing adolescents from both upscale and low-income neighborhoods. While I tutor a wide variety of subjects I'm most passionate about Spanish, History, and Literature. In my experience, helping students learn Spanish and prepare for standardized tests is the most rewarding part of teaching and tutoring. I'm a native Spanish speaker and love teaching the language and culture that I grew up with to others. Similarly, there is no feeling more satisfying than seeing a student I'm working with experience an "aha moment" as what they're learning starts to click and their confidence consequently grows. In my opinion, education isn't one size fits all, as such I individually tailor my lessons for each student I work with. When I'm not tutoring you can find me reading a book, playing soccer, or bemoaning my decision to be a life-long fan of the New York Jets.

Over the past 15 years, I have worked as an educator in a variety of roles. As a tutor, teacher's aide, and teacher, I have worked with students of every age from preschool to adult. I have worked with English language learners in the United States and Japan, tutored middle school, high school, and college students, and worked as a full-time classroom teacher. While my strongest areas are reading and writing, I also spent two years studying engineering and have tutored students in college mathematics courses. I am comfortable describing concepts in chemistry and physics as well. The result of my studies and work in education is flexibility as an educator. I am able to accommodate the subject matter needs of many students, and to modify my instructional style to complement the learning style of the student.Part of what I enjoy about education is learning how to reach a student in the most effective way possible. Drawing on past experience and finding creative ways to illustrate concepts is a stimulating and rewarding endeavor that usually involves a lot of smiles and laughter for both the student and me. I enjoy discussing and discovering connections between subjects, then using those connections to help create a deeper understanding of the material. When I'm not working, I enjoy reading (generally fiction and science fiction), playing basketball and running, and watching NBA games.
