I absolutely love teaching and tutoring. I taught English in primary schools in France last year. I learned an enormous amount about the importance of education and the importance of good teachers and mentors. Education is a field that I hope to pursue as a career and there is nothing more crucial to the project of education than fostering positive relationships with students. Tutoring is a great way to begin to do that. I also have a real passion for the subjects I tutor, History, English, and French. The best part about tutoring is helping students to feel the same way about history and language as I do. The tutoring process is of great benefit to me as well, not just the student. I always come away learning a lot both about the relevant subjects and about the best ways to connect to students and tap into their scholarly potential.

I am a student at Juniata College in Pennsylvania studying Environmental Science and French. I am passionate about tutoring and I have worked as a tutor for international studentsl. I have been taking French for eight years and will study abroad this coming June. I firmly believe that every student is capable of reaching their full potential with the right training for them. I believe in the importance of tutor flexibility and I am willing to meet students where they are, accommodating a wide variety of student learning styles.I have experience working with students in need of writing and reading assistance. I am also a qualified SAT tutor and ran the tutoring program at my High School, during which I gained experience training other tutors and teaching them a wide variety of strategies.During my junior year, I completed a research project on language acquisition in second language learners. The focus of my study was on the importance of emotional support in academic settings. Since completing this study, I have retained a strong interest in this concept and work to make sure my students are confident in themselves in order to boost their academics. Everyone is capable of learning if they are taught with patience and flexibility. In my spare time, I enjoy hiking, biking, camping, backpacking, ceramics and playing my guitar.

One of my favorite teachers when I was in high school was a history teacher that I had my sophomore year. He wasn't afraid to be goofy, he was able to gain the respect of his students, and he made history interesting by relating it to his students lives. He is what inspired me to become a social studies teacher. I graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater with a major in History and a degree in Secondary Education. I am a nerd for history and social studies in general, and I take every opportunity that I can to learn as much as I can about any topic that interests me. My favorite part about teachings is building a positive rapport with my students because it helps me relate material to their lives and builds a strong level of respect between the teacher and the student. I tutor many different subjects in social studies, such as Social Studies (broad field), US History, and Geography. I also tutor other subjects such as English and Writing. To me, it is so important to have fun while learning. If a student does not have fun or make their learning interesting, it become rote and mechanical. I try my hardest to get to know my students and build a rapport with them in order to relate the material to their own lives, which makes it more meaningful to them. Building a rapport with a student also helps them become comfortable in a setting. It is vital that a student feel comfortable in their education environment because when a student feels comfortable they will be more inclined to be engaged in learning and express their interests.I love sports, especially Lacrosse, Football, and Baseball. I have a very adventurous attitude, so I enjoy saltwater fishing, longboarding, surfing, hiking, kayaking and anything outdoors. I am also very musical, and I play the electric bass and the ever popular ukulele.

I have been a tutor for ten years, specializing in writing and reading. As a high school student, I began tutoring my peers in writing and research. At Barnard College, Columbia University I was one of 13 students selected from my class as a Barnard College Writing Fellow. After a rigorous selection process, I was trained through an intensive semester-long seminar in critical analysis, persuasive writing and revision. I worked as a Writing Fellow for three years, tutoring and editing student work at every stage from idea to final draft. Throughout my three years, I had the highest rank among student feedback.Using my training and experience as a college level Writing Fellow, I have tutored many High School students in writing their college essays and applications. As a college application tutor, my philosophy is that each student's application needs to tell a story about who they are. Through the application, the college should be able to get to know the student. I work to not only craft this application but show the student how to better their writing through the process.I have also as a private tutor focusing on a range of subjects such as History, Psychology, Statistics, and Sociology. I help students prepare for exams using effective study methods as well as complete writing assignments specifically for these subjects. As a tutor I strive to use specific questions and techniques to enable each student to come to a new understanding of the subject matter and confidence in their mastery.

I am a passionate educator with over eight years of teaching and tutoring experience. I have worked with many different kinds of learners during my career as a public school teacher, and I understand that every student has their own unique way of growing and of mastering skills. I have experience teaching a wide variety of literature and non-fiction texts and am very familiar with the Common Core and its emphasis on research skills. I especially enjoy teaching writing; I myself love to write and I teach students a clear process for approaching challenging essay assignments. Above all, I believe that learning should be meaningful and enjoyable and that any academic task is part of a student's personal journey of discovery. My undergraduate education at Columbia University gave me a thorough understanding of British, American, Latino, and African-American literature. My Master of Arts program in Adolescent English Education at Hunter College has enhanced my knowledge of literature while also covering the teaching skills that allow me to help students to master difficult concepts.I am a confident teacher of test preparation skills. I provide reading and writing strategies that empower students to perform at a high level on selected-response, short response, and essay questions. I emphasize the importance of analyzing test questions and passages so that students have a clear "plan of attack" on test day.My personal interests include playing guitar, songwriting, Tai Chi, and meditation.

I am a Monmouth University graduate with a Bachelors degree in Communications, concentrating in Journalism and Public Relations. While at Monmouth University, I also double minored in Sociology and Gender Studies. It was these minors that inspired me to look for a profession that would allow me to combine my love and reading and writing with public service and also help me make a lasting impact on society. What better profession would allow me to make a difference everyday than teaching? With that in mind, I returned to school at Kean University where I majored in English and Secondary Education and obtained my post-baccalaureate teacher's certification. Since then I have had the opportunity and experience teaching students at every grade level, from 6-12 over the past five years. While I have tutored many subjects, my biggest passion is literature. I love helping students develop an appreciation and love for reading. I also enjoy teaching SAT prep, particularly Critical Writing and Reading because it is so rewarding to see students improve once I help them learn the tricks of the test! In the summer there is no place I'd rather be than the beach and in my spare time I try to read for pleasure as much as possible, particularly young adult, science fiction, and dystopian novels.

I am a graduate of the Master's program at the School of Education at St. John's University, and a graduate of the undergraduate English program at Washington University in St. Louis. I am currently eligible to teach 7th to 12th grade English in a New York City school under the Initial Certificate, and have a combined three years of experience in the Department of Education. I have a significant background in tutoring, including test prep, English, Mathematics, and Social Studies. My extensive background in education, coupled with my intense desire to bring about positive change in the lives of New York City school children and my belief in the importance of using emerging educational technologies to engage with and enrich the education of students, has made me both a successful teacher, and a popular tutor. While I have long believed that every student deserves and is capable of academic success, it was my time spent as a school teacher in East New York that most thoroughly convinced me of this fact. While the time I spent in an urban classroom was challenging in a way I never could have expected, it likewise brought with it an inexpressible joy- I was not just educating students about literature, I was teaching them how they can learn from and add to the literary language that is the undercurrent of our culture. As such, I have come to believe that the role of instructor is not just to educate but to prepare. My goal as a teacher and a tutor is to differentiate my instruction as finely as possible so that every student is prepared to demonstrate their knowledge on an examination and to consciously implement said knowledge in a way that improves their everyday life. This passion for teaching is matched by a passion for the written word. In the past ten years, I have been a regular contributing writer to three newspapers, and have also seen my creative works printed in ten publications. In college, I started a successful literary magazine and have since started a second publication in my Brooklyn neighborhood. I have studied literature and practiced my own writing with a fervor that I am excited to pass on to my tutoring students. My experience grants me the unique experience to speak directly and frankly to students who might otherwise not actively participate in the writing process or who might not clearly understand how an English education can benefit their own life.In my free time, I practice computer programming for emerging technologies (wearable devices such as Google Glass) and continue my career as a writer. I study technology extensively and love engaging my own interest in technology with that of my students. By connecting with students in this way, I am able to connect them more thoroughly to the education process and get to know them better as individuals.

I graduated from Wesleyan University in 2013 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in French Studies and College of Letters (a multi-disciplinary program that includes English, history and philosophy). I wrote my senior honors thesis on the 1980 Berber Spring in Algeria and 2011 Libyan Revolution. During a semester abroad in Paris, I tutored elementary school children as an English language assistant. While at Wesleyan, I also worked as an ESL instructor, tutoring a Moroccan immigrant and helping him to gain citizenship and employment. Education has given me the opportunity to find what I am passionate about, and I hope to help others gain that same opportunity through tutoring. I tutor in English, French, and standardized tests, and especially enjoy helping students think about subjects creatively and from new angles. My largest interest, outside of education, is music. I worked throughout college as a music director at Wesleyan's radio station, and currently work as a producer and staff writer for Afropop Worldwide, a non-profit radio show dedicated to African music and music of the African diaspora. I also love watching independent films and reading fiction and philosophy. I love living in Brooklyn, but I enjoy leaving the city to go hiking, and I bike throughout the city as much as possible.
