I am a 7th grade English/Language Arts teacher at Gary Comer College Prep Middle School in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood of Chicago, IL. I have also taught math in self-contained and remedial setting.I really love to help students find their voice in writing. I found that for me, as soon as I began to write about things I was passionate about on an individual level, I was able to unlock a lot of creativity. If students write about what they know, rather than what they think someone would like to hear, they often become much more authentic writers.I love to watch football with my roommate and friends (Go Texans!) and have started getting into basketball since I moved to Chicago. I have a beautiful cat named Daisy and I love to swim and be outside!

I am currently a fourth grade special educator providing support in primarily math, reading and writing. I also work as a reading interventionist with the Leveled Literacy Intervention program as well as Sonday for students who benefited from multisensory reading instruction.I graduated in June 2004 from Columbia High School, in May 2008 from Rutgers College with a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, in May 2009 with a Master's Degree in Education and have dual certification in elementary education (K-5) and middle school mathematics (6-8). I returned to school at Kean University to get my Teacher of Students with Disabilities certification which I completed in 2013.Working with students with special needs means working with learners with widely varying abilities. I design creative, stimulating lesson plans that accommodate multiple intelligences, bring a hands-on approach to learning, and keep students interested and focused. I encourage student learning by using a number of hands on activities, including the use of manipulatives, and by incorporating technology into my lessons.

As a professional homemaker with free time the idea of helping students achieve their academic goals appeals to me. I have extensive knowledge of biology; specifically biochemistry, genetics, and molecular biology, as well as a good understanding of chemistry, history, and mathematics. My hobbies include reading and writing, animal care (I have a pet dog), hiking and fitness. Growing up with three younger siblings has given me the life experience necessary to understand and relate to younger generations.I also understand the concerns of parents as I'm friends with many who have small children, and can relate to their concerns and experience while diplomatically explaining how best each particular child can achieve academic success.

I am a Masters in Teaching student at Brandeis University with a Bachelor's degree in English Literature and Business from Brandeis University. I prioritize access to a quality education. I work to provide personalized and differentiated instruction for every student in my tutelage. I work with parents and other caregivers to create the most well-rounded, successful learning plan for students, and work as a team with students and parents to develop learning goals. I help students to develop ownership over their own learning, and to feel successful about the skills they are developing as they continue to progress. I have worked with students as an SAT preparatory tutor, as an ESL tutor, and in an elementary school classroom as a student teacher. I am passionate about every subject I tutor, but my personal strengths are in developing literacy skills (reading and writing) in students K-12. I care about my students, and work to incorporate my students' interests and strengths into each tutoring session. When I am not in the classroom, I enjoy exploring the Mass Audubon Reservations, hiking, reading, and skiing in the winter months.

Learning should be fun! I truly believe that learning can and should be an enjoyable pursuit. There is so much knowledge to be had, which is exactly the thing that draws me to teaching. I am passionate about helping students find the joy in learning and unlocking their full potential. I completed my undergraduate degree in Theatre Arts and Studio Arts at Gettysburg College, and received my master's degree in Early Childhood Education from Towson University. I spent the last four years in the public school classroom, where I taught students from a variety of backgrounds. My teaching style tends to be hands-on and creative, and I do not believe that all students learn the same way. It is important to me to respect a student's learning style and adjust my teaching approach accordingly. While much of my experience comes from working with young students, I tutor a broad range of subjects. I am especially passionate about reading and literature, and love helping students realize books can unlock new worlds and ways of thinking. I am delighted to watch my toddler discovering the joys of books! When I am not being a mother or teacher, I like to crochet, bead, sew, and garden.
