I am a language arts teacher in every sense of the term!To tell you a little about my professional life, I have been working in Seoul as an English teacher for the past 5 years. I've taught in middle school, high school, and university positions but have most recently been working in a gifted school for English-fluent students looking to study advanced language arts concepts. I obtained my bachelor's in English literature and my master's in secondary English education from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. I have recently relocated to the United States and am anxious to continue my teaching career.My enthusiasm for teaching is boundless. My aim is to promote global citizenship and a broader understanding of our post-technological revolution world through bettering understanding of the English language, its contextual intricacies, and global communication. Hello! I have been working with children through babysitting, tutoring, and in professional environments since I was 12 years old. While I originally hail from Cape Cod, MA, I will be spending most of my summer in Boston taking Organic Chemistry at Harvard. Outside of the classroom, I'm a part of Georgetown's club rugby team and also participate in GUMSHOE, a club that teaches math and science to inner city students. I also enjoy going for runs to the monuments in DC and playing in pickup soccer games!For me, I especially enjoy tutoring mathematics because I think it serves as a foundation for a number of other subjects and also enhances problem solving ability. While I have taught various subjects such as financial literacy and music, I especially love to work with students in mathematics as well as SAT preparation.In mathematics, I often feel that the way it is taught in schools can cause students to struggle with or lose interest in it. Additionally, a student cannot always have their questions or misunderstandings personally addressed in a classroom which can be particularly frustrating in math. I enjoy getting students excited about mathematics by helping them overcome difficulties in understanding that come from being in such an environment.As for the SAT, I believe that in my own endeavor to do well on it; I have developed approaches to and understandings of the test that will greatly help students preparing for it. The test can be rather daunting for a student so having someone to guide studying and the development of the skills necessary to do well on the SAT is greatly valuable.Outside of academics, music is a huge part of my life; I am an avid trumpet player and am part of a music-based fraternity. At the age of five, I had no idea that such behavior could lead to a rewarding life focus in education.So my passion for theatre began at an early agewhether it was the elementary school plays where I devoted hundreds of after-school hours to rehearsing and performing classic childrens fairy tale stories or the required classroom educational plays. In high school, I discovered theories and philosophies behind my work, methods with which I could experiment, strategies to try out, and ideas to consider and above all, ideas that I could eventually teach to students.After high school, I attended UC Irvines Claire Trevor School of the Arts, and I continued this education further, both onstage and in the classroom. I played with aspects of theatre to which I had never been previously exposed (such as absurdism and film acting) and recently developed my own methods and theories of acting, Bruce Lee-ing my technique by taking bits and pieces of the masters and combining them into a system that works for me. This is where I discovered my passion for teaching. Watching my teachers work in this environment I realized that so much of teaching is beginning the process. If you can start students, but let them continue on the path, you have done your job. You don't have to teach the "right method" or one that works every time--rather you should expose students to ideas and thoughts and let them choose what is most helpful to them. As a tutor, I have always striven to do only 20-40 percent of the talking in each session and let the students do the work, discovering their own ideas through minimal prompting from me.Teaching requires constant curiosity, exploration, and re-thinking, and I cannot wait to work with you. In the winter of 2004, I had the pleasure of earning my first degree from Texas Southern University. I received a Bachelors of Arts in Psychology. From there I entered the classroom and began my teaching career. I began working with at risk students at an alternative school for behavioral concerns. I noticed that many of the students there were smart but had behavioral characteristics that hindered their learning process. I started as a teacher aide but enjoyed it so much that I decided to become certified. I chose to receive my certification in grades 4-8 in all content areas. My personal belief is that these are those most critical times of a students educational career. My desire to want to become a counselor blossomed in those first four years. I made the decision in 2008 to work towards a Masters' degree in School Counseling. I attended University of Houston-Clear Lake and obtained my degree in 2012. During the road to my degrees, I had the pleasure of teaching middle school students in all content areas. Now that I have been a school counselor for the past fours years I have come to miss the classroom environment. There is so much joy in watching students learn something new and the excitement they present. The primary subjects that I tutor are English & Language Arts and middle school level Math. Essay writing would probably be considered my favorite subject since I consider myself a writer as well. Many students struggle with the subject because they are not sure what to say. My advice to students is always to follow your knowledge of the topic and let your mind flow freely. When working with students I try to get to know them as an individual so that learning can be tailored to their needs. There are no two brains that think alike and therefore should be taught using different methods at times. One of the largest components that becomes a hurdle in student learning is study skills or lack thereof. Before I start working with a student I always investigate their studying style. Based on the method they utilize I do my best to tweak the needed changes to maximize student learning. Whenever my time is not devoted to educating I love to listen to music and write poetry. I try to be a student of all genres of music because I believe songs tell the story of a person. My favorite sports are basketball and boxing although I find myself drawn to anything that has a competitive nature.

I recently applied to the University of Washington to get my master's in middle eastern studies. Currently, I am studying Arabic through an online program offered by Oregon State University. I am fortunate to have had many different kinds of tutoring experiences. I volunteered in Quito, Ecuador with a non-profit daycare facility for at-risk youth. My duties included reading with children in English and helping them with school work. In junior high and high school I was a peer mentor. This gave me experience working with older students and refining study skills. In college, I was a Teacher's Assistant which allowed me to help students at a college level master course material and study for exams. I have tutored algebra, geometry, reading, writing, history, anthropology, and religious studies. My favorite subject to tutor is math. Math has challenged me in the past, so I know from experience how rewarding it is to finally understand a concept. I want to help students achieve this feeling. I also love helping students with writing. Writing is such a creative and fun process for me, and I enjoy helping students express themselves creatively on paper. My teaching philosophy is that every student I tutor is also an incredible teacher for me. Each student's learning style is so unique. A good tutor is patient and passionate enough to engage each student's unique learning style and help them find study skills and learning techniques that fit their style the best.
