I am a graduate and current Master of Arts student at UMBC. I received my Bachelor of Arts in English Communications with an Art History Minor. Thereafter, I was accepted into the University's accelerated BA/ MA Texts, Technologies, and Literature program, which explores the way various texts interact including digital, academic, and functional everyday use and challenges students to bridge the gap between literature and communications studies. My thesis research focuses on students' learning and study habits, especial of English writing and composition, and the implementation of tools that encourage "basic" students towards higher education.In my own experience, I have struggled with motivation, but have been fortunate enough to encounter caring and dedicated educators that have worked with me to discover the habits that enable me to feel more capable and self-sufficient. Previously, I was curious and creative but undisciplined, and since, I've learned to take control of my education to be the most efficient scholar I can be. I'm a proponent of figuring out one's strengths to work through their weaknesses. I'm good at reflective praise and constructive criticism. I'm very easy going and friendly, and want knowledge to be a shared experience. I want to provide productive expertise and encouragement to use a student's learning style to complete tasks and develop self-confidence.My strongest study areas are English grammar and composition, writing and editing for college essays, vocabulary and reading literature comprehension, and Art History. The area I am most knowledgeable about is Modernism, but my favorite is non-Western art, especially public and resistance art. My love for relationships and my desire to help the less fortunate or struggling beautifully melded together when I had the chance to take up tutoring in my sophomore year of high school. My most memorable tutoring experience consisted of working with an ESL student who was struggling with writing and English. Although I encountered obstacles in my teaching, I was constantly motivated by the fact that I could use my education, especially in areas that I am greatly passionate about (writing and literature), to help this student gain confidence in her learning abilities and get to a point where, instead of being discouraged, she could actually enjoy learning. I especially loved the moments when she reached a breakthrough in her understanding of a concept and was so happy that I had been able to use my knowledge to enhance her understanding and enjoyment of a topic. As the older sister to two wonderful brothers, I often found myself aiding them in their organization and coursework growing up. I firmly believe that education is one of the most important aspects to life. Beyond simply getting a job, there is so much in the world to explore, and I plan to never stop learning and growing even after I receive my degree. Having retired after 30 years as a teacher, I find that I miss my students: teaching them, learning from them, and helping them on their academic journey. I view education as a journey, not a destination such as a test to study for or a paper to prepare. Education is an adventure full of exciting viewpoints, new twists, and solvable 'problems.'In my personal journey, every year I encountered 100 to 105 new viewpoints on every subject imaginable. We didn't just learn English; we explored the world. Our journey in the classroom wasn't limited to papers, grammar, and vocabulary though they were important components. We explored history through our novel readings, debated and wrote essays using primary sources from the Library of Congress, and changed a governor's viewpoint on the environment with a book my students wrote together. Though it never got 'published' in the sense of selling it at a book store, it changed viewpoints and gave students new ideas on the power of writing.Every year brought new twists to my adventure as a teacher and my students' adventure in learning. In reading Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist, we explored child labor from the middle 1800's to the early 1900's. Using primary sources from the Library of Congress, we found children in England working in coal mines and textile mills, children in America toiling in canneries, coal mines, textile mills, and southern fisheries. We examined pictures from The New York Times to figure out what was happening by looking at the details and sharing our thoughts. Students wrote poetry based on their lives, their perspective, and their hopes. We learned empathy and compassion for others by examining the viewpoints of Scout, Jem, and Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird. We didn't just read and study the book; we immersed ourselves in their shoes.Every year, the students and I encountered countless problems: academic, personal, and social. We learned to problem solve and think positively. We learned there are many ways to approach a 'problem' and even more ways to solve it. We learned from each other.Students have enriched my life. My lifelong journey has been hand in hand with boys and girls from all walks of life, numerous cultural backgrounds, and unique perspectives. I have been their 'student' learning from them, arguing with them, and loving them. Students are our country's lifeblood. I work with my team to analyze student data and to work with them to create interventions that bring students from a lower test score to passing test score. Before my work as a teacher, I worked on a pilot program with bringing their program into a St. Louis City charter school. In this position, I worked with students from 5th to 8th grade who were reading and doing math at a 1st grade level and up in an intense specials rotation.I know how to work with students of all ages. The work I do with my own students on a daily basis is the same dedication and level of differentiation that I would bring to students that I tutor.
