I am a graduate and current Master of Arts student at UMBC. I received my Bachelor of Arts in English Communications with an Art History Minor. Thereafter, I was accepted into the University's accelerated BA/ MA Texts, Technologies, and Literature program, which explores the way various texts interact including digital, academic, and functional everyday use and challenges students to bridge the gap between literature and communications studies. My thesis research focuses on students' learning and study habits, especial of English writing and composition, and the implementation of tools that encourage "basic" students towards higher education. In my own experience, I have struggled with motivation, but have been fortunate enough to encounter caring and dedicated educators that have worked with me to discover the habits that enable me to feel more capable and self-sufficient. Previously, I was curious and creative but undisciplined, and since, I've learned to take control of my education to be the most efficient scholar I can be. I'm a proponent of figuring out one's strengths to work through their weaknesses. I'm good at reflective praise and constructive criticism. I'm very easy going and friendly, and want knowledge to be a shared experience. I want to provide productive expertise and encouragement to use a student's learning style to complete tasks and develop self-confidence.My strongest study areas are English grammar and composition, writing and editing for college essays, vocabulary and reading literature comprehension, and Art History. The area I am most knowledgeable about is Modernism, but my favorite is non-Western art, especially public and resistance art. I am patient in explanation, and feel confident communicating an idea a variety of ways, or employing a range of materials to make the subject clearer. My strength is finding practical ways of applying knowledge, and breaking down large tasks. I am very encouraging for students that feel overwhelmed or anxious about managing school. My goal is to approach education as a collaboration of learners that can improve one's quality of life and enable change and progress, and help students become more independent learners through questioning and improving study skills. My personal professional interests include writing short fiction and memoire, editing, copyediting, curatorial work and art criticism. In my spare time, I particularly enjoy visiting art and history museums, drawing, painting, jewelry making, watching documentaries and foreign films, pizza, and dogs, but especially my Chihuahua Skeeter.

I graduated from Temple University with a BA in Communications and Columbia University with an Ed.M. in Art and Art Education. I believe that all children and youth have the ability to learn and that their potential emerges from thoughtful pedagogical practices. Cultivating a student-centered approach, and understanding multiple intelligences as the various cognitive and creative modes of how students think and learn, allow academic goals and personal development to flourish. By this, students are led on the path to mastery and achievement, and the desire to be life-long learners.

My love for relationships and my desire to help the less fortunate or struggling beautifully melded together when I had the chance to take up tutoring in my sophomore year of high school. My most memorable tutoring experience consisted of working with an ESL student who was struggling with writing and English. Although I encountered obstacles in my teaching, I was constantly motivated by the fact that I could use my education, especially in areas that I am greatly passionate about (writing and literature), to help this student gain confidence in her learning abilities and get to a point where, instead of being discouraged, she could actually enjoy learning. I especially loved the moments when she reached a breakthrough in her understanding of a concept and was so happy that I had been able to use my knowledge to enhance her understanding and enjoyment of a topic. I tutored through out high school and continue to tutor in college as I help other students to realize their potential and achieve their goals.Beyond tutoring, I enjoy hanging out with friends, mentoring, going for runs, and playing music (I play guitar, piano, and am currently learning cello). I also love to read making my life as an English major quite enjoyable and one of my greatest delights is seeing a neat pile of the five different books I'm trying to read simultaneously all stacked up on my desk. I look forward to the great privilege of working with students and getting to know them both academically and personally!

Hola! I joined Varsity Tutors primarily because I was looking for a way to use Spanish more often. I have spoken Spanish for nearly 10 years, learning the language by traveling abroad and through high school and college courses, and I love it! I also have many other academic interests and I am excited to tutor in any of the areas listed on my profile. I have tutored a wide age-range; from pre-k to college and everything between.I was a tutor in several capacities throughout my years at school, and have continued to tutor and teach since then. I really enjoy helping students grow their own sense of self-confidence and watching them grasp the material. Sometimes all it takes is a little extra explanation that is hard to get in the classroom when the teacher is focusing on so many students at once. My style is pretty laid-back. I'm friendly and patient, and I will do what I can to help you as long as you are willing to help yourself. I love using nemonic devices that help keep vocab or other concepts in our brains.

Good education, I believe is one of the most important gifts you can give to a child.I started my interest in imparting knowledge to others in Middle School. In a program called Peer to Peer, I learned to mentor lower grade students in subjects that were challenging them. For me English, both reading and writing, were always my subjects of choice. Later on, in High School, I started tutoring not by design but in an informal way. I was always available to help edit essays, proof read papers or formulate theses.I am a rising sophomore at the University of Pennsylvania majoring in International Relations and minoring in French and English. The studies of English and Literature have been my passion for a long time. I enjoy reading about cultures while familiarizing myself with the world’s diverse peoples. In my first year of University, I took three English courses and an intensive Writing Seminar which helped me develop my ability of analyzing, interpreting and explaining complex English texts while improving my written and oral communication skills. One of my greatest joys is helping a student who is first afraid or confused about a subject to understand it to the ability of being a master of that subject. During my freshman year, I was involved in tutoring children in West Philadelphia. The students assigned to us were often of lower academic ability and I loved the challenge the opportunity offered to me. To improve their motivation, I applied different teaching methods including games, quizzes and debates. Seeing my students improve their listening skills, their grammar and their research skills was very gratifying and that inspired me to help others to develop and to achieve their maximum potential. I am very creative and enjoy devising methods that make learning interesting. We are not born masters of our craft, we toil until we are masters of our craft. I am dedicated to encouraging young students to push themselves and embrace the growth process in order to develop and achieve. Through tailored tutoring to meet each student’s specific requirements, coupled with my ability to work well with others, I believe my students will excel.

I graduated from Teachers College, Columbia University with a Masters in the Teaching of English. I've been a classroom teacher for the past five years. I currently teach 8th grade English in Massachusetts, and I previously taught 6, 7, and 8th grade English in the Bronx, New York. I am an avid reader and writer, with a BA in Literature and Creative Writing from Bard College. As an educator, I strive to provide each student with the concrete strategies that allow readers to make meaning of text, and to clearly express ideas through writing. I make my process as a reader and writer transparent, and I've seen my students try out those steps, and make progress. With progress comes enthusiasm, and eagerness to make those steps their own -- that is when they soar! While I've worked most extensively with middle school students, I have worked with elementary school students in after-school English Language Arts programs, and taught 9th and 10th grade English during my graduate training. I've enjoyed working with students at each of these levels; it has enhanced my practice, encouraging me to identify the embedded skills within a task, and adapt my pedagogy to meet the needs of each individual. When I'm not working with students, you'll find me curled up with a good book, exploring one of Boston's many museums, or setting out for a vigorous hike.

I am currently an undergraduate at the University of California - Irvine pursuing a dual degree in Economics and Political Science. As the older sister to two wonderful brothers, I often found myself aiding them in their organization and coursework growing up. In high school I became a peer tutor and continued to help others succeed and comprehend the material that we were taught. I firmly believe that education is one of the most important aspects to life. Beyond simply getting a job, there is so much in the world to explore, and I plan to never stop learning and growing even after I receive my degree. Innate curiosity, even into just one subject can spark a lifelong pursuit of knowledge. And as cliche as it sounds, knowledge truly is power.

Having retired after 30 years as a teacher, I find that I miss my students: teaching them, learning from them, and helping them on their academic journey. I view education as a journey, not a destination such as a test to study for or a paper to prepare. Education is an adventure full of exciting viewpoints, new twists, and solvable 'problems.'In my personal journey, every year I encountered 100 to 105 new viewpoints on every subject imaginable. We didn't just learn English; we explored the world. Our journey in the classroom wasn't limited to papers, grammar, and vocabulary though they were important components. We explored history through our novel readings, debated and wrote essays using primary sources from the Library of Congress, and changed a governor's viewpoint on the environment with a book my students wrote together. Though it never got 'published' in the sense of selling it at a book store, it changed viewpoints and gave students new ideas on the power of writing.Every year brought new twists to my adventure as a teacher and my students' adventure in learning. In reading Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist, we explored child labor from the middle 1800's to the early 1900's. Using primary sources from the Library of Congress, we found children in England working in coal mines and textile mills, children in America toiling in canneries, coal mines, textile mills, and southern fisheries. We examined pictures from The New York Times to figure out what was happening by looking at the details and sharing our thoughts. Students wrote poetry based on their lives, their perspective, and their hopes. We learned empathy and compassion for others by examining the viewpoints of Scout, Jem, and Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird. We didn't just read and study the book; we immersed ourselves in their shoes.Every year, the students and I encountered countless problems: academic, personal, and social. We learned to problem solve and think positively. We learned there are many ways to approach a 'problem' and even more ways to solve it. We learned from each other.Students have enriched my life. My lifelong journey has been hand in hand with boys and girls from all walks of life, numerous cultural backgrounds, and unique perspectives. I have been their 'student' learning from them, arguing with them, and loving them. Students are our country's lifeblood. Whatever I can do to enhance their journey is a blessing. Please join me in my new adventure with Varsity Tutors! I look forward to what I will learn on my continuing journey.

I have been a certified teacher for the past 3 years. I have taught 6th, 5th, and now 3rd grade to a wonderful group of students exclusively at Title 1 schools. Each of my students requires individualized attention and specific interventions in math and reading. I work with my team to analyze student data and to work with them to create interventions that bring students from a lower test score to passing test score. Before my work as a teacher, I worked on a pilot program with bringing their program into a St. Louis City charter school. In this position, I worked with students from 5th to 8th grade who were reading and doing math at a 1st grade level and up in an intense specials rotation.I know how to work with students of all ages. The work I do with my own students on a daily basis is the same dedication and level of differentiation that I would bring to students that I tutor. I love working with students and I believe that all students can make goals and in turn reach them.
