I am currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Children's Literature and a Master of Science in Library and Information Science at Simmons College (Boston, MA). I received my Bachelor of Arts degree from Agnes Scott College (Atlanta, GA) with a double-major in English Literature and Classical Civilizations. At Agnes Scott, I worked for three years in the Center for Writing and Speaking, where I discovered my love of helping students express their ideas through writing. Since then, I have worked primarily with elementary school students, including a year of assisting in a first grade classroom in Austria. I tutor many subject areas related to English, Reading, Writing, and German. My passion is reading and inspiring a love of words and literature in students. I believe that strong reading skills are fundamental to engaging with the world around us and open up new worlds for our imaginations. Outside of academics, I enjoy traveling, learning new languages, and participating in community theater.

I am a recent graduate of the University of Oregon's Environmental Science program, and have minors in Biology and Latin American studies. In the fall I will be starting a program in Speech and Hearing Sciences, and plan to follow up with a masters in Speech Language Pathology. I am in my third year and am currently taking medical school courses. After my fifth year in City College, I will be transferring to a participating medical school in the northeast region. I have been a private tutor for the past five years. I have worked with students of all age ranges in many different subjects. Though I am passionate about science, I tutor Math, English and Writing. I have found my niche to be helping students be confident and prepared for standardized tests such as the SAT, ISEE, etc. I believe that it is not always about easily knowing the right answer, but learning the steps to come to the correct conclusion. When I am not studying, I work in a psychology lab and explore places around New York City.

I was always a straight-A student,\ but needed help when it came to standardized testing for college admission, especially the verbal sections. I attended two years of prep school and eventually obtained a 2200. My biggest takeaway was the way I learn and retain information. I believe what makes me unique as a teacher is that I take the time to understand the needs of my students, work with them to come with a learning strategy that works for them, and create a measurable objective to work towards. The most daunting goal can be obtained with the right planning and cooperation. By showing the students that I am willing to work hard, I believe it motivates them to try just as hard.

I spent the past year working as a full-time high school English teacher in the Council Rock School District where I taught ninth grade English, Public Speaking, and Ancient Mythology. I have always wanted to be a teacher, and I have had numerous opportunities to work with students in various settings. While at Gettysburg, I was a tutor for several after school programs working with elementary to high school students. I studied abroad in England the fall of my junior year, and I worked as a student aide in a year six classroom in Lancaster, England. I also worked at Gettysburg College’s Admissions Office as a tour guide, which gave me the chance to work closely with admissions officers who gave me insight into the college application process and tips for writing a good college essay. I am able to help with any English subject as well as test prep for reading and writing. As a teacher, I am passionate about helping students achieve academic success, and I will bring that same passion and creativity to any tutoring opportunity. I am currently a senior at the City College of New York completing a dual degree in mathematics and English with an emphasis in creative writing. I am equally passionate about both subjects and greatly enjoy stimulating others' interest in them through education. As a tutor, I do so by emphasizing the importance of understanding the greater context of the subject into which the specific skills to be learned fit. I find this method to be successful in easing the learning process, particularly in mathematics, as it helps students both to see how the various topics they are learning fit together and to retain the knowledge in the long term. As an added benefit, it also helps to fill any gaps in their education from previous years and improves their ability to quickly absorb new topics in the future.When I am not tutoring or attending class, I spend most of my time reading or writing. I have a large portfolio of short stories, am working on my first novel, and have begun working with professors at school to start getting my work published. I also travel and spend as much time in the outdoors as possible. I have visited almost all fifty states, spent the previous summer hiking in the Indian Himalayas, and am planning a trip to Iceland for this upcoming August.
