I have a Bachelor of Arts from Southern Methodist University. My major is World Languages French and Spanish and my minor is Economics. My graduating GPA was 3.67 and I am a member of several honor societies. I participated in the SMU study abroad program, and previously obtained an Associate of Arts in Teaching Degree in Foreign Languages with a GPA of 4.0.I also have over a year experience tutoring high school students in AVID program; moreover I was an intern for the French American Chamber of Commerce. I did my minor in Economics, which is the reason why I had to take many calculus courses and advanced math classes.I was born in Colombia, therefore my first language is Spanish; also I had the opportunity to study abroad in Paris while I was doing my undergrad career.I believe each student has the potential to master new concepts with the right approach and I will love to help you achieve your goals!!!

I am a recent graduate of Bowdoin College with a BA in Biology, English, and Theater. I have been tutoring pretty steadily in one form or another since middle school and am quite comfortable tackling diverse subjects in both the arts and sciences. As a native Spanish speaker, reader, and writer I have years of experience tutoring students at all proficiency levels in the language. My bilingual background has also given me the opportunity to work with native Spanish speakers in other academic subjects. I bring a compassionate and collaborative approach to teaching. I strongly believe that a tutor must treat his or her student as a teammate and not as someone who merely needs instruction. The goal of any tutoring session should be to bring out and foster a student's own capacity to understand and excel in a given field, which begins with respect. I am currently pursuing a graduate study in biology- where my interests primarily lie in evolution and bioanthropology.

IntroParticipating with students to meet a challenge is an adventure and an exciting prospect for me. I loved acquiring language skills and proficiency, and I love communicating enthusiasm for aspects of ELA to learners who will achieve lifelong benefits. Forming a clear sentence or paragraph to express a fresh idea is one more window or view of the world and a contribution to it. Similar discoveries occur with a reading assignment. If it’s fiction, the student experiences characters’ struggles and understands how the author portrays these in social contexts and environments, using style, tone, plot, and the large vision of the theme. In nonfiction, the reader explores the thesis and topic to assess their truth or flaws. Analysis of every part of the work clarifies its essence. In poetry there is delight in imagery, diction, form and structure. In all genres, knowing about the period, background, and passions of an author gives entrance into new worlds for a reader.MethodsMany talents define an effective tutor. My teaching approach stimulates curiosity and imagination as well as problem solving strategies and awareness of relevant resources. I’m attuned to students’ personalities, concerns, and learning modes and relate subjects they study to their own experiences. Understanding can deepen with personal identification or ability to visualize, based on prior knowledge and past accomplishment. Good tutoring depends on rapport and mutual engagement as well, to bring concepts to life and unity to the learning situation. In dynamic sessions, students sharpen skills and become comfortable with syntax and grammar elements while they learn paragraph and essay structure. They develop a thesis with their ideas about it, using an outline; then, in most cases, they organize research materials. They apply critical analysis to texts and to their drafts. Specific references and details support insights; the result is vivid writing that reveals scholarship. For mastery of reading skills, I promote the enjoyment of vocabulary and word usage, as well as appreciation of the many ways authors involve a reader. The student and I draw on comprehension strategies such as morpheme and context analysis (for vocabulary enhancement), identification and purpose of key passages, and prediction of text direction or potential surprises. Many questions and discussions arise. The nuance and richness in a reading experience is the focus for these sessions.BackgroundMy qualifications for tutoring include a study of literature at Barnard College, where I earned a B.A.; I had transferred there from Oberlin College, which gave me two thrilling years as well. Later, I entered programs at UC Irvine (for TESL work), then several at UCLA, Florida State University, and Southern CT State University (for fiction writing). With my husband, I resided in Mexico for eleven years and began to tutor English there, then continued in this country, in California and Connecticut. Agencies and school districts referred me for state exam preparation, reading acceleration at the elementaryand secondary levels, and homebound instruction in general curricula. I tutored a large number of students privately as well. In California I was also a Spanish-English interpreter and a mentor for at-risk teens and youth on probation. For seven years, I was a writing tutor at Gateway Community College and Southern CT State University in New Haven. I received superior evaluations from students and supervisors. During my twenty years as a tutor, it’s been especially rewarding to interact with people from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds. In addition to assisting ELA students, I’ve taught ESL at different levels in many locations. I spent four years with nonnatives from various countries in a middle school pullout program. When they entered five mainstream classes, I stayed with the group, implementing teachers’ assignments and leading discussions, as well as guiding them in their research. They won academic honors and saw their writing featured in school magazines. It’s gratifying to make this second language accessible to learners striving for fluency and confidence.I have many interests outside of work. These include the arts, family life, children’s and teens’ advocacy, other cultures, and everything in nature.I look forward to working with Varsity and with its dedicated pool of students.

I just graduated college so I know how stressful schoolwork is, and I want to help! I personally have benefitted from some amazing tutors throughout elementary school, high school, and even college. A good tutor can go a long way to make you feel more confident in your school work, better prepared for classroom assessments, and more focused on your academic goals. I want to be able to help you reach your goals--no matter what they are!I just graduated from the University of Connecticut Honors Program where I designed an interdisciplinary curriculum combining economics, political science, and sociology. I also minored in Human Rights and Urban and Community Studies. I graduated magna cum laude with a 3.8 GPA, a member of two honor societies, and a New England Scholar. I've been tutoring pretty informally since I started doing it after school for my high school's National Honor Society chapter, but I am my friends' go-to source for writing and reading help. I also have 4 years of experience with kids in a bunch of different capacities including as a camp counselor and as a nanny, so I know what kind of energy it takes to keep students engaged and having fun.My biggest priority is to make learning interesting for my students. What works for one student may not work for another, but everyone is capable of succeeding, even in subjects they struggle with. It just takes a little bit of extra time and energy to figure out how we can propel you forward. If you're willing to work with me, I think we can get you to achieve some of your toughest goals in school. Whether it's writing a really great paper, understanding a tough book, or preparing for a challenging exam, I hope we can teach each other a few things along the way!

Seeing students successfully transfer knowledge that is given to them to their lives is of the utmost importance to me. I have dedicated eight years of my life to professionally becoming an expert in teaching English and English Language Arts. I have taught students from the 3rd to the 12th grade levels. I received my middle school level certification from the University of South Carolina and received my master's degree in secondary education from the University of Phoenix. I love working with students one on one or in a small group setting. My teaching style is simplicity. I love to break down the information given in a manner that my students can understand it and reciprocate to me the same information in their own style of comprehension. In my free time I love reading and narrating audiobooks.

I attended Stanford University for my B.A., earned an M.M. (Master's of Music) from the University of Washington in 2012, and am now completing my D.M.A. at UW as well. All of my degrees are in music composition, a field that allows me to interpret and describe ideas that intrigue me in creative ways using sound. That said, I still have a secret crush on math and science, and I love exploring and analyzing languages and the written word. (In fact, much of the music I have written has been inspired by literary or linguistic concepts.) I have taught courses in music theory, history, and composition at the University of Washington, and I have tutored students of all ages in school subjects ranging from biology to social studies. I especially like working through math and standardized test questions since I enjoy puzzles and problem solving though helping someone to express their feelings and opinions in writing can also be very rewarding. In my spare time, I am an avid home cook and runner. I also love crossword puzzles and spicy food.I feel that the most valuable aspect of education is learning how to think in different ways and approach problems from various perspectives. Even if a few years from now, you cannot quite remember how to graph an equation, at one point you thought through how to present information in a form that is easier to visually interpret. The exact meaning of "prestidigitation" might elude you some day, but if you ran across this word on the SAT or the GRE, you likely had to learn how to infer tone and meaning using limited information. These skills are valuable and likely what you will retain throughout your life. This is why I care about helping people think about problems not just solve them. I care about showing them the paths to solving problems or writing essays so that they can walk them themselves rather than rummaging around in their memories for disconnected facts and formulas. I do not just want to give you the car keys--I want to teach you how to drive.

I was born drawing, I think.I am an artist enthusiastic about math and science, and I have successfully infused both passions into a technique designed to guide students in a visual manner. My tactic of digesting conceptual math and science problems and re-organizing them in a visually appealing manner can help guide student through, what seems to them as, esoteric material. Additionally, I believe that any environment conducive to learning must also be enriched with humor as a method for education. The possibility to relate humor to difficult math and science problems is an essential way to reduce the stress-producing hormones, cortisol and epinephrine. Providing students with a comfortable environment will ultimately encourage them to embrace learning as a fun and rewarding experience. After all, a successful tutor is not just one who provides a student with method for accomplishing each new problem, but one who can help mature him or her into a person with an endearing curiosity and a fearless ambition; a person so enthused about a subject that they squirm to teach others.I received a Bachelor of Fine Art in 2013, but afterwards completed a variety of chemistry and math courses at Raritan Valley Community College. Instantly, my love for numbers was rekindled and a newly discovered passion for chemistry was established. While in college, I quickly discovered the excitement I had towards teaching others about the subjects I hold dear to myself. This eventually lead to self-lead study sessions with peers, which included creating visually appealing study guides to re-introduce information in a clear and fun manner, as well as using my impeccable penmanship to solve problems on the dry-erase board. My interests in studio art, art history, math, chemistry, and teaching others have encouraged me to pursue a Masters in Art Conservation and eventually be trained to practice and teach Art Conservation.Ultimately, I am an easy-going individual that works well with both children, teenagers, and adults. While I am not engaged in my academics, I enjoy drawing, painting, reading, hiking, bike riding, stand-up comedy, and independently learning French! Although I do not watch television that much, my favorite show is Star Trek Voyager.
