I have been a certified teacher for the past 3 years. I have taught 6th, 5th, and now 3rd grade to a wonderful group of students exclusively at Title 1 schools. Each of my students requires individualized attention and specific interventions in math and reading. I work with my team to analyze student data and to work with them to create interventions that bring students from a lower test score to passing test score. Before my work as a teacher, I worked on a pilot program with bringing their program into a St. Louis City charter school. In this position, I worked with students from 5th to 8th grade who were reading and doing math at a 1st grade level and up in an intense specials rotation.I know how to work with students of all ages. The work I do with my own students on a daily basis is the same dedication and level of differentiation that I would bring to students that I tutor. I love working with students and I believe that all students can make goals and in turn reach them.

I absolutely love to teach, and I love to learn, but I can assure you, it wasn't always this way!I struggled a great deal academically throughout my middle and high school years. Friends, clothes, dating...pretty much everything came before academics. It wasn't until college, when I was able to take classes I really had an interest in, that I finally began to excel. Now, to be clear, I didn't just suddenly wake up "smart" one day (although that would've been nice). The reason I was doing so well was because, in the past, if I found a subject boring, or even slightly challenging, I didn't care about it. I tuned my teacher out, and made zero effort.Despite the challenges of school and life in general, I was determine to move forward and be successful. After graduating high school, on my own dime, I went to a local community college and took my "basics". Eventually, I transferred to the University of Houston where I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology, followed by a Masters degree in Social Work. Mission "Prove my Parents Wrong": Accomplished. After graduating, I became a licensed therapist, and worked with children and families for about 10 years before making the decision transition to teaching. I went back to school to earn my teaching certification, and started teaching, and I love it!I am currently certified to teach every grade level, and have additional certifications in ESL, GT, and Special Education (and of course, being a teacher in Texas, I am a STAAR expert). I have worked extensively with students of all ages, with a variety of needs and goals. I have a plethora of resources and "tools" that I use to ensure each student gets exactly what he/she needs, whether that's test prep, help with a writing/editing a graduate research paper, learning to read, subject enrichment and everything above, beyond and in between. I have a very open and flexible schedule, and, personally, I think I am awesome to work with! (a little joke of course)Bottom line (finally, I know)...As previously mentioned, college was where I realized I was actually a little bit smarter than I had been giving myself credit for, but it was also where it became clear that there were some things I was just not going to be able to wrap my head around. My solution? I found some great tutors, and as a result of my experiences with them, I am a firm believer that the best tutors are those who have needed and used one at some point! Now, I'm certainly not knocking those individuals that seem to just "get it" (no matter what the subject)...sigh...but that was definitely not me! I think it truly "takes one to know one", and that is really what drives me to do what I do!

I tutored while an undergraduate at Cornell University for Let's Get Ready, an organization which provides free SAT tutoring to economically disadvantaged high school students. What I believe makes me a great tutor are the following: I frequently engage the class, I find ways to make learning fun for my students and give them examples of how their lessons apply to the world we inhabit, and I am very thorough in the material and diligently work, while being patient, to make sure each student is understanding the lessons because I know everyone has a unique way he/she processes and learns.

Growing up as the oldest of five kids, I've spent a large part of my life being a tutor for my siblings. This helped me develop my teaching skills at a young age, and served me well when I became a recitation instructor at University of Colorado Denver, teaching upper-division genetics. My year-long tenure there only deepened my love of teaching and helped me strengthen my abilities to educate many different styles of learners. I also have the experience with graduate standardized testing, as I scored in the 95th percentile or above on the SAT, ACT, and MCAT.Since graduating in May with two degrees in biology and psychology, I have spent my time going through the medical school application process. During the upcoming year, I hope to help tutor those still in school not only to keep on my toes academically, but to help those who may be struggling with various subjects throughout their academic careers. There is no better feeling than watching someone have a eureka moment of understanding, and I look forward to meeting and working with new students. As a Colorado native, I love spending my free time hiking and climbing my way through the Rockies. I also enjoy playing volleyball (being 6'8" has its advantages) and teaching myself to play the guitar.

I'm a big Boston Celtics fan and I speak three languages. I can get you the test results you need to succeed because I went through the exams myself and performed well. The first time I took the SAT I actually wasn't satisfied with my score, so I spent 2 months working hard to get my score to where I wanted it to be. The second time I took the exam I saw a 200-point increase. Previously, I have had experience teaching the SSAT and the SAT. The student I tutored in SSAT successfully passed the exam is now attending a private high school abroad. With VarsityTutor's online learning platform, I will be able to transfer knowledge in a visual, easy-to-understand manner. I look forward to being your tutor and helping you reach your academic goals. :)

I am a graduate of the University of Florida- Go Gators! I received my Bachelor of Science in December 2009, majoring in Animal Sciences- Animal Biology. I worked for a few years at an internationally accredited guide dog school before returning to the University of Florida for graduate school. I am currently finishing writing my thesis and will have my Master of Science in Animal Sciences in May 2016. During my graduate career, I had the opportunity to serve as a mentor to local grade students and assisted with their homework and class assignments. I also taught a physiology and endocrinology class to undergraduate college students. Both of these experiences were extremely rewarding and my favorite part of my job was the one on one interaction with students after class and during office hours. I have a true passion for teaching and learning that I love passing on to my students. My teaching strategy is to create lessons based on the individual student's learning style and strengths. Relating examples and practice problems to a student's personal interests and hobbies will engage the student and make learning fun! My favorite subjects to tutor are math, reading, and science. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, spending time outside with my dog, and watching college football.

I have a AS degree in Mathematics and a BS degree in Biochemistry from Stony Brook University. I am an aspiring physician who recently took the MCAT. I have been a tutor for six years. I have tutored high school and college students in subjects including chemistry, physics, biology, and mathematics (from pre algebra to differential equations). I have also worked at Stony Brook University as a college biology lecturer. I like to use a hands on approach to tutoring rather than just lecturing, although I find it best to adapt my methods to the learning style of each individual student.I love to dance, especially ballet. I also love to learn new languages. Currently, I am continuing my studies of Spanish, and learning American Sign Language. I would like to become fluent in French and Mandarin Chinese in the future.I absolutely love teaching and would love to help out anyway I can!

More often than not, I receive the same set of responses when asked what my Major was in college. "Psychology? What can you do with that?", "So you must love Freud right?", "Hope you don't plan on getting a job." At first, I took these questions and comments at face value, allowing doubt to ever so slowly creep in and consume me. I knew why I loved Psychology, but I wasn't able to communicate my passion and enthusiasm for the field with those around me. The field of psychology is so vast and expansive that most people aren't familiar with what it is psychologists actually do. That's when it hit me, I shouldn't evade questions about psychology, I should embrace them. Now, when confronted about my choice of major, I am afforded the opportunity to engage in a dialogue not only about the field of Psychology in general, but about Industrial and Organizational Psychology and its contributions to the community at large.Learning is a continuous process. Now, organizations are taking it upon themselves to consistently train employees in order to maintain a strategic edge. Learning, however, is not a passive process. Engagement, learner control, learning orientation, situational and individual differences all play a strategic role in the learning process. My goal is to help individuals better understand the learning process as a whole; developing the skills necessary to perform and learn across a wide array of subjects and levels. My aim is to assist, teach, and inspire. Learning isn't an easy process. However, with the right mindset and the right tools, the process can be both challenging and enjoyable.

I am a firm believer in the motto "It takes a village to raise a child." It is important that we work together as teachers, tutors, parents and family to ensure each child gets the best education possible. My role as a teacher and tutor is to discover each student's individual learning style and tailor the learning material and curriculum to meet the needs of that individual student so that they are able to achieve personal success.

I'm Ari, a third-year medical student on a research year. I have tutored for Varsity since 2016, and have helped over 70 students succeed on the MCAT and USMLE Step 1! I have a passion for teaching and helping make science clear.I scored in the 97th percentile on both the MCAT and USMLE Step 1, and have an extensive understanding of how to excel at the "game" of standardized tests. My teaching style is individualized and student-oriented: I will tailor lectures to your specific learning methods. I'm a very visual learner myself, so I like to use images, real-world examples, and animations to ensure that you will truly UNDERSTAND the rationale for each step of the problem-solving method.MCAT sessions will emphasize practice with real AAMC passages as well as reviewing concepts. I will teach you tips, tricks, strategies, and patterns to watch out for that I have combed years of AAMC material to find.Step 1 sessions are tailored with NBME-style clinical vignettes, with a focus on high-yield concepts and classic patient presentations.
