I favor science-fiction (particularly military and cyberpunk) but generally enjoy any story that is interesting and well told. I am a graduate of the University of Oregon where I received my Bachelor of Arts in Romance Languages (French and Spanish) with a minor in European Studies and graduated with honors. Since graduation, I have traveled extensively, living in Northern Ireland, France and Germany for 7 years altogether. Four of those years were spent in Berlin where I learned German studying Philosophy and working as a tour guide. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about Foreign Languages.In my experience helping students of all ages, ranging from helping with homework and test prep for school to the late bloomer looking to acquire further education after their "formal" education has ended, my goal is to make the student comfortable and empower them giving them the confidence in their own abilities to achieve. I am a firm proponent of education believing it to be absolutely necessary for an improved quality of life, and I try to impart this appreciation to all of my students. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my two dogs, reading, watching all kinds of sports, jogging, and most of all writing songs, singing, and playing guitar and piano in my band.

I am a MD PhD from Germany who has been living and working in the US now for more than 2.5 yrs. I love teaching students, seeing them improve themselves while learning. Nothing makes teaching more worth it than creating that spark in a students eye, because he/she either really understood something or is just fascinated with the topic and wants to know more.

I graduated from the University of Oregon with a BA in Mathematics and concurrently completed a BA in Spanish. Currently I'm working on completing a MS in Statistics at Portland State University. I enjoy playing guitar, reading, learning foreign languages and math. I've loved math for the way it offers never-ending opportunities of discovery and ways for people to push the boundaries of their abilities and knowledge. I believe that with a strong motivation to work hard, and some encouragement, that we're all capable of excelling at math despite however difficult it may be.Working as a ninth grade math teacher in a public school in Mozambique as a Peace Corps Volunteer I've had experience teaching and tutoring hundreds of students. Additionally, I have worked with kids as young as elementary school up to adults to understand algebra, arithmetic, geometry and calculus in English as well as in Spanish. I am also equipped to tutor beginning and intermediate Spanish learners.As a tutor, I consider the student's prior knowledge of subject matter as well as his/her strengths, and difficulties when approaching a manner of instruction. Moving at a slow rate, I provide explanations and examples of the concepts at hand and then allow the student opportunities to test his/her knowledge. With appropriate motivation, encouragement and time, anybody can overcome his/her difficulties and learn something new and valuable.

Now, I would love the opportunity to be your tutor.When I'm not tutoring, I'm spending time with my son, teaching or doing yoga, riding my bike, painting, playing the ukulele, or drinking coffee.

I am a poet and community activist with a strong connection to the place where I live. Poetry deepens my connection to the earth, and my commitment to help create a just, peaceful and sustainable world. I work with other volunteers on environmental issues such as climate change, the cleanup of the Hanford Nuclear Reservation and the Portland Harbor superfund cleanup. I graduated from the PSU Leadership for Sustainability Education master's program with a certificate in Teaching Adult Learners. I've taught and tutored ESL and GED as well as a graduate course, Global Political Ecology. I have also worked with special needs students. An important part of my life-long learning has been to visit other places and cultures. I served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Uganda where I worked with primary teachers. I've learned to learn from those I teach!

I have received an Associates in Science from Portland Community College and nearly finished with my Bachelor's in Physics from Oregon State University, which I expect to have in August. Both my college and life experience has led me to work with people of various ages in a plethora of settings, but a favorite focus has been in teaching children. I have done a lot of outreach with my physics department with K-12 kids, including designing experiments and walking kids through demonstrations, but I've also worked with children in small groups in a more casual environment.Despite the focus on children, I have also worked with peers in math and physics and enjoy employing many different methods of learning, such as 3D models, folding paper, Mathematica graphs and simulations, and physician demonstrations.My favorite subject to teach is literature, with physics and mathematics close seconds. My teaching philosophy can be summed up as follows:Learning should be fun.People learn at different rates and in different ways.Teaching and learning should be flexible and made to fit the student.It's good to take breaks and let your brain rest.My tutoring style is to be a guide and to help a student "learn how to learn", so to speak. I like to try to get the student to pull on previous knowledge and to learn fundamental concepts for learning and problem solving that can be used in many different subject areas.
