Bonjour! I am a recent graduate of the University of South Carolina where I obtained degrees in European Studies and French. I have always been a giant history buff and liked taking Social Studies and History exams in school because I thought they were fun (yeah...I was that kid). I have been studying French since my freshman year of high school and continued my studies in college. I studied abroad in Dijon, France where I learned not only how amazing real Dijon mustard is but all about French culture and the French language. My studies on Europe focused on the European Union, European History, and International Relations. My goal in tutoring is to make subjects exciting and relatable to a student's interests. I know how difficult it is to pronounce an 'R' in French and how hard it is to remember what modern countries were in the Kingdom of Prussia, but I'm here to help!I am available every night for tutoring as well as all day Tuesday-Thursday.

I am currently pursuing my PhD in Literature/Creative Writing at the University of Denver. Prior to beginning my doctoral studies, I was a creative writing/English lecturer at Washington University in St. Louis where I completed my MFA and senior post-graduate teaching fellowship. I received my BA in Philosophy from Carleton College in 2009. Before my time in St. Louis and Denver, I taught English Literature at the Loomis Chaffee School in Connecticut and, earlier, at Germantown High School in Philadelphia. During my time at Loomis and Germantown, I taught English Lit I/III, Contemporary Literature, 10th grade grammar and expository writing seminars, Literature of the Sea, Experimental Novel, and Creative Writing. At Wash U, I taught Fiction Writing I, II, and Microfiction, and last year I facilitated pedagogy training for Wash U MFA graduate students. I currently tutor at DU's Writing Center and, beginning this fall, I will teach undergraduate fiction classes. I have a marked interest in modern and contemporary fiction, though I very much look forward to helping students with all craft/literature/essay writing/verbal test taking endeavors.

Algebra Tutor • +14 Subjects
I graduated from Eastern Washington University located in the beautiful town of Cheney, Washington. While there, I received my degree in Education with an endorsement in Physics and a minor in Africana Studies. After graduation I substitute taught in multiple high schools and middle schools. At the same time, I taught an intro to rock climbing class at night to people of all ages. Last year I moved to the wonderful state of Colorado and taught intervention math to freshman in the Montbello area. Even though I can tutor a variety of subjects (Algebra 1/2, Geometry, Physics, and Chemistry), I am most passionate about Algebra 1 and Physics. I love teaching Algebra 1 because it is the firm foundation of anything higher in math. If you struggle with it, the rest your math career will be a struggle. It is the best feeling when my students finally have that 'ah-ha' moment and understand how to manipulate an equation. Physics is my other passion because it explains how the world works! You want to know how fast a car was going when it drifted around that corner or understand why there is absolutely no sound in space? I’d love to explain it to you. Everyone learns in different ways. For some it’s auditory, some it’s visual, and for most it’s kinesthetic. I want to figure out how you learn and go from there. If you need to make angles with your body to know the difference between acute and obtuse then let’s do it! If we need to write a song with vocabulary for you to remember the terms then I am in. I want learning to be fun because that is how you are going to retain information. Outside of work I love rock climbing, acro yoga, 'upcycling' old clothes, watching movies like Lord of the Rings, and attempting to draw/paint.

10th Grade Reading Tutor • +43 Subjects
Empowering students to steer destiny in the direction of their choice is my challenge as an educator.A well oiled classroom is imperative when you're in charge of 30+ students. The downside, however, is that some of those students will slip through the cracks if they are not given enough attention. Upon earning my degree in English Education at Illinois State University, I realized after my first year of teaching that most students in Chicago Public Schools were reading at least two grades below grade level.Thats when I decided to pursue a Masters in Reading to address the problem. I tutored K12 (all subjects) for three years to master the methodology I gleaned from professors before returning to the classroom. Since teaching is an art, I consider my instructional philosophy to be versatility in motion because learning styles and progress vary accordingly. Indeed, if I hadn't had the passion to empower students to be more than they thought they could be, I wouldn't have been surrounded by priceless smiles that kept me coming back.

College Level American History Tutor • +8 Subjects
I am a Senior at the University of Colorado Denver, majoring in History and Teacher Education in Social Studies at the Secondary level (Middle and High School). I expect to complete my Bachelor's program in Spring 2016, and anticipate receiving my Colorado Teaching Certification in Spring 2017. Although I have not yet ruled out Graduate School, I currently intend to teach High School History upon completing my certification.Though most of my tutoring experience has been with Undergraduates at the collegiate level, I have on occasion worked with younger students. I tend to encounter the same difficulties with all History students, regardless of their age or grade. They tell me that History is boring, and they don't consider it relevant to their lives. My goal is to change that perception by finding parallels between the subject matter and the modern world. History is so much more than a list of names and dates to be memorized. In order to truly understand the modern world one must be aware of how it came to be. If I can connect historical events to issues and ideas that matter to the student they will be much more receptive to the material.

I am a graduate of Winona State University and University of Northern Colorado. I first received my Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Recreation and Tourism and a minor in Intercultural Communication, and went on to complete my graduate studies to obtain a Master's degree in Multilingual Education - TESOL. Additionally, I am a licensed teacher for grades 5-12 in English Language Arts. After graduating college in Minnesota, I moved to Australia to travel with the intention of building upon my career in tourism by accepting an internship at a five star hotel. Soon after working here and traveling, I realized that the industry wasn't for me, and that my real passion was teaching. In college I had worked with our English Language Center students by partaking in communication practice with them. I couldn't forget how much I loved interacting with people from other countries and how much joy I got from helping those students grow in their English language proficiency. So, I continued by education by obtaining a CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults). Through this process, I began teaching English to international college students in Australia, and my spark for teaching was ignited.Upon leaving Australia, I moved to Hanoi, Vietnam to put my teaching skills to practice. There, I worked for both public elementary schools, after-school English centers, and private classes. I had the privilege to teach students of all ages - from as young as five years old to adults. I loved teaching children because of their enthusiasm for learning and excitement about learning a new language. We played lots of games together to develop their skills and tried to have as much fun as possible while learning. I also loved teaching the adults. The commitment to learning I saw in adults was inspiring, and it was great to be able to have conversations with one another and get to know each other throughout our lessons. After leaving Vietnam, I moved to Denver, CO in 2018 to start a job as an English Language Development (ELD) Specialist at a Denver high school, where I taught for 2 years. I worked with students from 9th-11th grade solely on ELD. I have taught an ELD pull-out class at this school, where students with lower-level English proficiency are placed in a class together to explicitly learn the English language. Additionally, I co-taught English Language Arts classes. I worked with an ELA co-teacher who deals mostly with content-related English topics such as literature, themes, and character development, while I as the ELD Specialist supported emergent bilingual students in accessing the content by giving them English language assistance. Our school was awarded the ELPA Award of Excellence for the 2019-2020 school year for the exceptional support provided to bilingual students. Also, as part of my job here, I worked to teach students test-taking strategies for the Writing and Language and the Reading tests on the SAT. We worked through these skills weekly in ELA class, and I also was a teacher for our school's SAT Bootcamp. Additionally, I was part of this school's CH-ISA team, which monitors every emergent bilingual at the school and their growth.During COVID, I chose to expand my teaching experiences into the virtual realm of education. I have taught several virtual summer camps with Varsity Tutors where I taught creative writing and led a literature camp centered on a specific novel. I have also taught with various online platforms where I work with a remote curriculum to ensure students gain knowledge and understanding of English, even though I am not physically there with them.In addition to working with K-12 students both abroad and in CO, I also have worked with adults. Recently, I taught ESL classes to adults twice a week, where I worked with multi-level students to help them grow in their English proficiency. I also volunteered for a year tutoring an adult refugee woman in her English abilities.Education truly is the key to success. I believe that every person, whether an immigrant, refugee, citizen, American-born or not, deserves a quality education. I believe it is my job to serve students of all ages who require assistance and support with English to become successful in their academic and work careers.I am very much looking forward to teaching and tutoring with Varsity Tutors and looking forward to continuing to serve its brilliant students.
