I'm referring to math, of course, but I didn't always like the subject. Until about age 16, I thought of math as a boring, mind-numbing process of blindly memorizing formulas and then forgetting them after the test, but a series of wonderful teachers showed me the truth. I had thought that everythin...

I am currently a Harvard student majoring in Computer Science with a minor in Applied Mathematics. I graduated Class Valedictorian in high school and was named National Merit Finalist. I took 16 AP classes in high school, including AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, AP Computer Science A, AP Physics C : Mechanics and AP Physics 1, with a score of 5 in all of the tests. I scored a 1570/1600 in my SAT and 800 in the SAT Math Level 2 Subject Test and 790 in the SAT Physics Subject Test.I am very passionate about math and computer science. I would like to share my knowledge in the subject matter with students who have yet to discover the beauty and the power of quantitative and analytical abilities. I am patient and look forward to empowering others to learn and understand. At Harvard, I have taken CS50, CS51, Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra and Differential Equations, and a very cool class called Celestial Navigation, which is part of the Astrophysics Department. I am personally interested in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. The more I learn about the power of math, the more fascinated I become with it. I hope I can transmit my enthusiasm to my students.

I am currently an undergraduate student at Washington University in St. Louis working towards a Bachelors degree in Spanish. Over the years, I have volunteered as a tutor with various organizations, including the Refugee Empowerment Program in Memphis, Tennessee, and the Collegebound program that is part of Washington Universitys main tutoring initiative, Each One Teach One. In college, I have also taught ESL. In my experience working with students in elementary through high school and even with graduate students, I have found that students learn best and are more motivated to take on challenges in environments in which they feel comfortable enough to make mistakes. I believe that patience and compassion are key in creating an academic environment in which students can excel. Independent thinking is also extremely crucial; it is important to recognize multiple approaches to learning and problem-solving and to be able to think critically and form ones own opinions. I tutor Spanish, English as a Second Language, Grammar, Reading, Writing, and Test Prep in the Reading and Writing sections. My personal favorite is writing; as an avid reader and writer, I appreciate the power of words and the beauty of language. Outside of academics, I am a deep lover of music. I also enjoy reading, writing, drawing, and exploring different creative outlets.

I am currently a student at Case Western Reserve University for computer science. In high school, I was a member of the Peer Tutoring and Mentoring Club and enjoy working with students, primarily in math and science. My favorite subject is physics because it combines science with math and is actually applicable to real life. My learning philosophy is to just do practice problems. The more practice, the easier each problem will be. Somebody can spend all day just studying notes, but he or she will learn best by just doing practice problems. Outside of school, I own a website design business and I enjoy to do anything outdoors. I love snow skiing, water skiing, boating, hiking, and fishing.

I grew up in a family of educators and have always been passionate about the pursuit of learning. I graduated from Northwestern University where I received a BA in Theater and a Mucial Theater Certificate. Growing up, I assisted with many of my mother's students and tutored many people from my school, specializing in math tutoring. Along with math, I also tutor writing, particularly essay writing and poetry. In college, I studied poetry abroad in Paris and have written poetry recreationally since high school. Finally, I attended a Spanish immersion elementary school and have continued to take classes in Spanish throughout my education and thusly am a good candidate to tutor Spanish. My teaching philosophy can be summarized with control. I like for the student to have holistic control over the material themselves rather than feel any inferior knowledge to me as the tutor or to their teachers. The most immediate way that I have found to access that control is for the student to conclude their own answer without fear of right or wrong. I believe that if the student discovers a pathway to the answer, even if the answer is initially wrong (in which case, of course, we would go through the problem together and search for where the student might have gone wrong), that s/he can walk into the class or test knowing that s/he is capable of finding answers. In my experience, the most frightening subject is that which one feels they have no knowledge past the question. As a musical theater actor, I am obviously interested in singing and dancing as well. In high school, along with theater, I also swam and ran track; and as a child I was a competitive gymnast and still do some tumbling. Furthermore, while living in Chicago, I ventured into the comedy scene, and have a new found interest in improvisational and sketch comedy. I am looking forward to meeting with students who are passionate about learning and looking forward to a ascertaining a personal role in their educations.

I am a recent graduate of Drexel University, in which I obtained a BS in Biological Sciences with a concentration in organismal physiology. During my college years, I was a peer tutor who would help struggling classmates in many math and science subjects. I also served as a merit badge counselor in my Boy Scout troop, teaching scouts (ages 12-17) in subjects such as First Aid and Emergency Preparedness. These experiences inspired me to continue this passion, striving to make learning a fun, insightful, and a lifelong process while helping students learn in the easiest and most effective way possible. My favorite subject to teach is math, specifically the SAT/ACT math sections. As someone who values education and intellectual curiosity, I hope to impose this same philosophy on my students. In my 7+ months working with Varsity Tutors, I have found profound satisfaction in helping students to the top of their class and increasing their test scores. I am a very flexible tutor willing to work around students' schedules.

Hello! My name is Malik Blackman and I am a second year Mechanical Engineering student at the University of Illinois at Chicago. I chose to become a Mechanical Engineer because of my passion for mathematics and physics, which stemmed from a very young age. My mother instilled a strong work ethic and zeal inside of me even before I ever stepped foot into a classroom. Because of these foundational skills I have been able to excel academically. During my high school career I was ranked first during my freshman year, and ended in the top 10% of my graduating class. After my first year at the University of Illinois at Chicago, I received at 3.30 GPA. In addition, I have worked as a Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory Intern for the past three summers, starting in the summer of 2014. Working at the lab has allowed me to connect with some of the best engineers and physicists in the world. In addition it has allowed me to gain insight on what a real-world in the field mechanical engineer does, as i was given projects that were related to my field of study. I would like to utilize all of my knowledge and resources to help YOU succeed!

Hello everyone. I am a Sophomore at the University of Maryland. I personally enjoy helping people with math and I'd be glad to help you too. I can help you with Algebra 1-2, Pre Calculus, and Calculus 1-2. I can also assist with Elementary and Middle School math.I believe that proper learning comes through many ways of receiving knowledge. Most students are guaranteed large classroom instruction, which is very crucial. But there is also a lot to be gained from good, personalized, high quality, one-on-one learning.I want to be able to give that to as many people as possible. And I will work with my students to achieve this goal.
