I have worked in education for nearly 20 years in three different states. Fifteen of those years I served as a traditional secondary classroom language arts teacher. I have taught a fully array of classes from 6th grade to 12th, from remedial level reading to AP level language and composition, plus electives such as journalism and creative writing in between.Public education has evolved in a way that makes me feel I'm no longer comfortable trying to evolve with it, so I've given up teaching and have begun working as a real estate agent in the south Seattle area. I look at tutoring as something I can do occasionally on the side, because I do miss working with students, especially those actively seeking to better themselves and their skills.

My Journey is to change the world one student at a time by empowering them to find the light within. I am passionate about justice, equity, diversity and kindness in all its forms. Students are who I serve, the reason I am here. Everything I do centers around inclusivity, belonging and empowerment for all no matter who they are or where they come from or where they are on life's journey. My call as a critical justice diversity educator and researcher is to make sure that what happens in the schools, in the workplace, in the policy manuals, and the courtrooms reflects a student-centered methodological stance that engenders inclusivity and reaches all learners where they are. The impact of a caring, positive environment of people who believe in a student cannot be overstated.One of my seventh graders, who had not grown at all as a reader after a year in a classroom setting, attended a small group summer program that I facilitated. Her teachers had become concerned that she may simply be stuck at her 3rd grade reading level. However, in a focused, small group setting, with appropriate support, she made 5 months of progress in two weeks. I could give numerous examples, but they all come back to the same point: all students can learn.My second principle relates to the first: high expectations and proper support are a pathway to success. High expectations are an educator's way of saying, "I believe in you" to their students. Throughout my career, when I have challenged my students, they have risen to meet it and walked away from the experience glowing with pride. I have directed middle school students performing Shakespeare and watched them go above and beyond to create a beautiful production. I have confronted a reading group with a book two years above their reading levels and seen them respond by growing rapidly as readers. When we expect greatness from our students, and support them on their path, we can see success that goes far beyond our initial impressions of their capabilities.

I am a high school English teacher who loves to read. I have been teaching high school for twelve years in Houston and Atlanta. I enjoy helping my students with college and scholarship essays and applications. I have helped fifteen of my students earn the Gates scholarship and have helped many others earn POSSE. I teach both AP Lit and AP Lang and love to analyze literature and rhetoric. I was teacher of the year this year and was a Yale National Teaching Fellow in both 2006 and 2008. I have a B.A. from the University of New Mexico in English Literature and an M.Ed. from Georgia State University in English Education. I am certified in secondary education English, ESL, gifted, and special ed. I am an unbelievably passionate teacher and work tirelessly to help every student reach their potential. I have been accused of being obsessed with the literary research paper, and I am guilty as charged. I have been a tutor in both professional and volunteer capacities for nearly 10 years and have taught students ranging in age from second and third grade through college. I have classroom teaching experience as well and can adapt to both group and individual settings. I have taught students of all abilities in a wide variety of subjects. There is no confusion too small or problem too complicated that I cannot help with if not solve. "Teaching" others and gaining their perspective is like "relearning" something and enjoying that "ah ha" moment all over again. I have worked with students of all ages and abilities, sponsored foreign exchange students, and collaborated with other artists and volunteers through community arts organizations.As my high school Valedictorian, I attended Xavier University on a full academic scholarship where I attained a BFA with a concentration in Drawing and Painting. I also studied classical dance from a German ballerina through a long teaching apprenticeship. I have always believed in the connections between art, athletics, and academics and that we learn best by doing. As a lifelong learner I have entered into jobs and projects where I could learn and share new skills both inside and outside the classroom. All of this experience has prepared me for my most important career as devoted wife and a proud mother of two. Currently I tutor English/ AP test taking, reading, writing, studio arts, design, and executive function. My true passion is education and how we best learn new skills, information, and alternative perspectives and cultures. I love travel, stories of all kinds, live theatre, and the art of conversation.

I just recently graduated from a Master's program in History from the University of Cambridge, in England. Before my Master's program, I also studied History as an undergraduate at Yale University. While I am available to tutor a wide variety of subjects and tests, including the ACT, I am most passionate about History (as if you couldn't tell already), and I am very excited to teach new students everything that I've had the chance to learn over the last five years. My tutoring experience includes providing general homework help for children with special needs, both in home and at school, and providing subject-specific help through online tutoring. I have also worked as a camp counselor, so I know how to treat students with the respect that they deserve, while also ensuring that they understand the material before them.In the long-term, I would like to work in the US government and help create foreign policy. For now, though, I'm interested in learning more about the foreign policy and national security challenges that face the United States today and how these issues might intertwine with the global energy market. In my spare time, I enjoy cycling, watching television and films, and listening to music.
