Anatomy Tutor • +26 Subjects
I am an expecting graduate of Ohio University in May 2017. I will receive my Bachelor of Science in Exercise Physiology with minors in biology and nutrition, as well as a certificate in diabetes. After graduation I plan to attend Physician Assistant School to eventually practice medicine in the field of emergency medicine or pediatrics. Throughout my academic career I have tutored a broad range of subjects including nutrition, organic chemistry, human anatomy and physiology. I am most passionate about human anatomy as I have been a teaching assistant at my university for three semesters, and will continue to do so for another two semesters. I often engage students that are stuck or unmotivated by including fun learning tools such as Jeopardy, animations, and memorable mnemonics. In my experience, remarkable improvement has been observed when students first understand fundamental concepts and then build their understanding to tie together what they are learning with the importance it has in today's society and their future careers. My goal is to perpetuate the importance of education to broaden the horizons of my students in hopes for a brighter future. Outside of academics I enjoy hiking, kayaking, playing the ukulele, and watching engaging shows on Netflix.

Thank you for considering me for your tutoring needs, but I have decided to pursue other interests outside of Varsity Tutors. To my existing students: Because of the non-compete/non-solicitation contract I signed with Varsity Tutors, I'm not able to provide tutoring services to you for at least 13 months. I'm also quite firm on adhering to both the letter and the spirit of that agreement because I gave my word.Since the four month window of time allowed by FINRA for candidates to pass the exams is considerably shorter than 13 months I agreed to with Varsity Tutors, you'll have already passed all your licenses well before that non-compete/non-solicitation period ends anyway, so no problem there.I have enjoyed my time with all the students I've helped to learn the material needed to pass their license exams and wish everyone the best!

I'm a writer and teacher who just moved back to New York from Colorado. I received my BA from Columbia in 2012 (I studied creative writing), and I graduated from the fiction MFA program at Colorado State University in 2015. I have three years experience teaching English at Colorado State University, where I created my own curricula for my composition courses and worked extensively with my students one-on-one. I have additional experience as a writing center tutor and an editor, the latter for the Columbia Spectator and the Colorado Review. Outside of the classroom I've received two fiction fellowships - one from the magazine "A Public Space" and the other from the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, MA.I love teaching and tutoring students of all ages. I believe a good tutoring relationship starts with an understanding of the student and his or her goals. I know going in that anyone I work with will necessarily be an expert on something that I know little about, and I try to carry this knowledge into the tutoring environment: we must understand each other as equals working toward a shared objective. I am here to help people become better readers, writers, and test-takers because those are my particular areas of expertise, but a good tutoring relationship must be free of condescension. I believe students should enjoy the work, increase their comfort with the work via low-stakes assignments, and take breaks. I hope to help students find a way to be engaged with the subject at hand, particularly because writing often affords more creativity and freedom of choice when it comes to subject matter. I look forward to working with you.

ACT Math Tutor • +15 Subjects
I recently graduated from the University of South Carolina's Honors College and earned a BA in Criminal Justice and a BS in Mathematics. I will be going back to USC in August to get my Master's of Teaching in Secondary Education - Mathematics. I absolutely love tutoring and teaching. Math is a hard subject and it is vital to have someone there who cares about you and helps you achieve your academic goals. I have been tutoring for the past two years both at tutoring firm and freelance work. Specifically, I have been working with two middle school boys for two years covering pre-Algebra and Algebra 1. At my tutoring firm, I have tutored every age and subject from fifth grade to 12th grade calculus, as well as ACT and SAT test prep. I primarily enjoy tutoring Algebra since it is so necessary for a strong mathematical foundation. I also enjoy tutoring geometry and AP Calculus.

Algebra Tutor • +5 Subjects
I love math, and I think everybody should! Some say that math is too abstract for the real world, that math is something taught at school that won't be used in real life. I disagree. The power of math comes from its abstractness! 2 + 2 = 4 whether If we're talking about points in a basketball game or dollars in your piggy bank. Sure the numbers mean nothing by themselves, but there are infinite possibilities for what the numbers can represent. This is why when we learn math, we are secretly learning a lot more than expected. Most people would be surprised that trigonometry teaches us how to tune a guitar. Calculus tells us how hard we need to step on our brakes. Chef's know that Algebra holds the secret to perfect recipes. The world of sports revolves around player statistics. Math does more than tell us how much to tip our waiters, it helps us understand the entire universe. The more we practice this universal subject, the more see it in our everyday lives, and in turn are able to apply the knowledge and wisdom we gained in math class.
