AP Environmental Science Tutor • +28 Subjects
I recently graduated from Georgia College with a B.A. in Geography and a minor in Environmental Science. My father came to American from a low-income village in south Wales, and his regular reminders of how different that life was for him reminded me not to take the opportunities I have for granted. During my education, I put that perspective into action and was fortunate enough to travel to the Caribbean for a study abroad class and again for a research conference, tutor three courses, and participate in creating an organic garden on campus.I like to engage with students on a personal level and try to transmit not only the information I have, but the enthusiasm I have about learning. I may not always have the answer to their questions in memory, but figuring out the answers alongside the students helps them understand the process, and teaches me new things along the way. My broad geography education solidified for me the importance of interdisciplinary approaches and putting things into spatial and temporal context. If someone is struggling with a subject, with a little creativity you can find a way to explain it in terms of something they are proficient in.I hope to tutor a variety of subjects in the humanities and environmental sciences, and to help ignite some sparks of enthusiasm for learning new perspectives.

Much of my initial tutoring experience was with Spanish-speaking children who, while very smart, were struggling because of the language barrier. Because of this, I understand that there are many factors involved in the success of a student. I strive to understand each of my students as a unique individual, allowing me to successfully pinpoint the most effective teaching style for him/her.As a self-proclaimed jack-of-all-trades, I prefer a well-rounded and holistic approach to education. Memorization can only take a student so far, and a genuine grasp of a subject can only be achieved through an understanding of its many nuances. Tutoring is a terrific method for reinforcing what the students experience in the classroom, and I think it should also be used as an opportunity to approach the material in a fresh new way.

10th Grade Math Tutor • +52 Subjects
I recently graduated from Morehouse College(2010-2014) in Atlanta, Georgia with a Bachelors of Science degree in Chemistry and Biology, minor in Mathematics. During my time at Morehouse College, I worked as a Chemistry, Biology and Math tutor for colleagues that were in need of assistance. Later, in 2012, I joined and later became the organizer for the "Fredrick Douglas Tutorial" program, a Saturday tutoring program for local primary, middle and high school students that needed help with their schoolwork. Other platforms that allowed me to gain experiences working with students were "Atlanta: Brain Awareness Month," "Children's Healthcare of Atlanta: College Volunteer," and "Faculdade Zumbi Dos Palmares English-Portuguese Tutoring (Brazil)," etc. After graduation, I spent the summer as an undergraduate tutor for the "Dreams to Teach" programs for students with the desire to become teachers after obtaining their Bachelors degrees. Since then, I've worked as a Research Laboratory Technician on projects such as nanoparticles and other biomaterials, regulation of brain inflammation, aggression, cilia and disease, & telomeres, stress and aging. These roles have continuously placed me in a position to help educate and tutor young students. From the time I began to consider the future and wonder who and what I would become, I've only ever thought of one thing: Science, specifically S.T.E.M (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), and when tutoring, I use my passion for it to motive and encourage students to focus and do well. I believe in catering a unique strategy for each student I work with. From past experiences, I've noticed that student requires different approaches for different problems, some may work best with board work, others with sample problems however some may require visual work. We will try each approach until we find the perfect fit. - While with Varsity Tutors, I will be working most with such subjects as Algebras 1 & 2, Geometry, Elementary Math, Arithmetic, Finite Mathematics, Pre-Algebra, Trigonometry, Earth & Life Sciences, Ecology, General Biology, Biochemistry, and Environmental Science. In my spare time, I enjoy swimming, cycling, and reading. I also do a lot of volunteer work at local hospitals, gather material for my personal research and I'm really big on cooking.

I am a veteran teacher with seven years of experience in grades K-5. I've had the pleasure of teaching in both South Carolina and Georgia, with vast experience in literacy and math intervention, as well as Talented and Gifted differentiation. For the past two years I have served as a primary interventionist for a group of students in my reading and math classes; I also supplemented students in Fulton County's virtual 6th grade math program through small group instruction on 6th grade math standards.I am a graduate of Roanoke College with a major in History and a minor in Elementary Education. I hold a graduate degree in Education Policy and Leadership Studies from the University of Texas at Arlington, and an endorsement in Talented and Gifted Education from the University of South Carolina. I recently won the Teacher of the Year award at my school, and I am certified in both Project Based Learning and STEM Education. An avid reader myself, I have a deep passion for teaching students how to read, and how to improve their reading comprehension. I also love teaching math, and have a deep understanding of how skills "spiral" in both the Common Core and Georgia math standards. With the advent of virtual teaching and learning this year, I spent the last quarter of the school year teaching online, so I am well-versed in a multitude of virtual resources and learning platforms.I believe learning should be fun and have honed my ability to integrate all subjects into learning "experiences," which are engaging and challenging for students. All of my students are taught the growth mindset, and through a series of small goals we work together to tackle even the hardest of subjects.

I am an ER Vet and have been for 1.5 years. I have been a vet for 3.5 years total and attended the University of Minnesota for vet school. I have always been someone that friends and classmates go to for answers or help with their work. I have several years of experience in informal tutoring and two years of formal tutoring experience. During my sophomore year of college, I worked at a high school for at risk inner city children teaching math and science. In the interim between undergrad and vet school, I tutored. My specialty is biology and any associated sciences, history, and essay writing. I really enjoy tutoring biology because I am very passionate about the subject. I find it fascinating and there are many great ways to teach it. I would say I am a very adaptable tutor; I find that no one style of teaching fits every person. But in general I like to just be a knowledge repository, able to help and guide a student in coming to the correct answer or understanding a problem. I like to use examples that a student can relate to especially with abstract concepts. I am a friendly person and want the person I am tutoring to like me, which I feel facilitates learning.Outside of the academic world I enjoy reading, playing video games, listening and playing music watching and playing sports, hanging out with friends, doing things outdoors, traveling, and movies/tv. I have a wide range of interests and can find common ground with almost anyone. I hope to not only help and inspire students to succeed but to be someone they can feel comfortable with and talk to about what interests them.
