I have a degree from James Madison University where I double majored in math and physics and minored in business. I have interned for NASA, managed a Mathnasium, and I am currently a data analyst for Parsons Corporation.I have tutored privately, for a nonprofit, for tutoring centers at James Madison University, or for Mathnasium since 2009. I specialize in Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus 1. I feel comfortable working with students of all ages and aptitudes. I have experience working with students with special needs, brain injuries, and ADHD.I am passionate about teaching math because each student thinks and learns differently. I always try to explain math in a way that makes sense to the student I'm working with. If a student is frustrated, that just means I need to find a different way to explain the same concept. I want my students to feel comfortable, encouraged, and accomplished. When I teach I use leading questions to make sure the student is engaged. Please let me know if you have any questions about my experience or methods.

I graduated from Hood College with my B.A. in Psychology. I then went on and completed my Master's in Mental Health Counseling from The Johns Hopkins University School of Education. I am currently a Licensed Graduate Professional Counselor in the state of Maryland. I work for a non-profit organization for a program that provides services to children in Montgomery County public schools, and work in a middle school in Rockville providing individual and group therapy to the students and their families. My current role as a therapist in the school, often encompasses several different aspects, not just therapy sessions. I run groups, attend IEP meetings, and often help with academic clubs after school run by our program. I have always enjoyed working with children and adolescents of all ages. I also have experience working with children who are diagnosed with ADHD. My experience with tutoring ranges from helping out the neighborhood children, to working after school 1:1 with a group of students who need strict and extra support for their classes. I have always had a passion for reading and literature, and have enjoyed writing essays. My strengths include Psychology and Counseling, and English and writing. I believe my background in professional counseling will aide in my abilities to help tutor by providing a personal and individualized approach to helping your child learn and understand the material, while keeping the session enjoyable. I love my job and working with the students and families in the school, but also have a great deal of interests outside of my work. In my spare time I enjoy any form of exercise, and will find any excuse to get outside when the weather is nice! My interests range from going to see live music, to curling up with a movie or good book! I love all animals, and will often help out my mother with her dog training business, as well.

I graduated Columbia University in 2021 and received my Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry with a minor in Statistics. While at Columbia, I worked in the chemistry peer help room as a peer tutor for general chemistry and organic chemistry. I was also a teaching assistant for General Chemistry Lab when the course was taught remotely. My passion is helping students learn how to problem solve and think critically. As a scientific researcher, critical thinking is important to learning and understanding what questions to ask. I want to help students overcome their frustrations and help simplify complex topics. A crucial step to this learning process is first finding out what one doesn't know, and then figuring out how to comprehend the unknown. I am excited to tutor a range of STEM subjects and standardized test prep. My belief is that every student learns differently and I will adapt my tutoring to each student's strength and learning style. In my free time, I enjoy running, cooking, and playing competitive ultimate frisbee.

I attended the University of Maryland in College Park, where I earned my degree in Economics. In addition to the Economics coursework, I also took many Science and Math classes in consideration for a career in Medicine. To further my education, I have recently applied to Dental schools as well as a Master's program. I have always enjoyed working with kids as well as teaching/coaching, so tutoring offers the perfect opportunity to do something I really enjoy. As a student, my favorite subjects were Math, Science, and Art. Of the three subjects, Math is my strongest and also my favorite subject to teach, followed by Sciences (especially Chemistry). Working with kids and teens has taught me the importance of patience and finding ways to keep the material interesting. I have found that the best way to learn is rarely by listening to someone, but instead by doing and having a conversation throughout the learning process. In my spare time, I love to play and watch rugby, basketball, football and other sports. I also like to paint, but given the choice, I would prefer to be outdoors doing something active like hiking, rock climbing, or camping.

I am a graduate of Wheaton College in Massachusetts. I received my Bachelor of Arts in African, African-American, and Diaspora Studies and took several courses in Hispanic Studies. I am currently working on my Master of Social Work Degree. As an undergraduate student, I studied abroad for an academic year in Puebla, Mexico where I was able to complete a project on the presence of people of African descent in Mexico. Since high school, I have been working with children and young people often as a mentor and in academic support. One of my first tutoring experiences was as a tutor for a reading program that provides extra support to first grade students who are struggling to read at grade level. In college, I taught eight grade US History and some elective courses to middle school students in a summer enrichment program in Norfolk, Virginia. Additionally, I have supported students in the college application process working with them on parts of their PSAT and in college essay writing. In past jobs, I have assisted students studying for Accupulacer exams to enter into Community Colleges. One of my favorite quotes is by Frederick Douglass and it sums up my beliefs on education: "Once you learn to read, you will be forever free." I believe that education has the power to liberate people and from my personal experiences, I have experienced it as a transformational process. In my spare time, I like writing poetry and attending poetry shows, participating in Improvisational Theater, and reading.

My goal is to provide students with an understanding of the topic that is tailored to the student's learning style while providing him or her broad insights into the issues. Quality writing, speaking, and argument can only come with a full understanding of facts and context, and having that will distinguish my students over their peers. Tailoring the material to the student will be an important way for him or her to, not only, understand and retain the information, but also to apply it. There are many educational tools that are either not used in classrooms or are not suitable for groups, finding the right tool for the student will be central to my approach. My background is interdisciplinary and broad. I am a practicing attorney in Washington, DC with prior careers in technology consulting and intelligence analysis. I have bachelor and master degrees from Carnegie Mellon University, a law degree from Washington & Lee University, and am licensed by the bars of Virginia and Maryland. I was raised in Tucson, Arizona and have lived many years on the east and west coasts as well as abroad. I speak Russian fluently and am conversational in Portuguese.
