A graduate of University of California, Berkeley, with a B.S. in Chemistry and a B.A. in Biology, I have a strong foundation in math and science. Since graduating from college, I have spent my time traveling to France, working a an academic tutor for middle and high school students, volunteering in the Emergency Department of a local hospital, and (most recently) applying to medical school. My favorite part about tutoring is working to engage students to feel as excited and interested as I do towards the material that I teach and hearing my students tell me that they learn more with me in an hour than they do in an entire week of school! When I teach, I strive to let my students know that they are in a safe place where no question is too insignificant to ask while simultaneously encouraging them to be active participants in the sessions so that they can better retain the material we cover and better analyze problems or questions for improved success! Some of my favorite activities outside of work include breaking out some tunes on my violin or guitar, experimenting in the kitchen with cooking various cuisines, staying active outdoors, and playing with my friends' and family's cats.

I have always appreciated education and the many ways it is relevant to our life. I am a recent college graduate from UC Riverside with a BA in Psychology. Being able to say that I have a college education is a privilege and an honor to me because I feel I am making a difference in my life and my family's life being the first one to graduate from college. Along the way I had many struggles and difficulties being an immigrant to the US. I did not know English or had any friends or family other than my parents and brothers. I worked really hard and good people supported me in my journey. I know how hard getting an education can be and how students can feel overwhelmed with accomplishing their dreams. That is why I would do my best as a Varsity Tutor to influence and help students grow in their journey as productive members of our society. The journey starts from a young age and developing good habits and a positive mind set is valuable from an early age. I have been a math teacher for 10 years; I love math and I love teaching!I totally get it: for most people, the end-goal of studying math isn't to become a mathematician or to fall deeply in love with division and derivatives.For most people, math is just a tool that they need to use (or study) to achieve a goal (becoming a doctor) or to accomplish a task (figuring out how much paint you need to paint that funny shaped room).So, I don't expect my students to love math because of its inherent beauty. As part of my experience in college, I was a supplemental instruction leader and involved in math reader programs, which developed my teaching skills in different levels of mathematics. Even after I graduated, I still continued to do small group teaching in a private education institute and some one-on-one tutoring. When I see my students are struggling with math, I am always patient and use different approaches to make sure they understand the material before moving on. I can also teach Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese too. If you are also interested in learning Chinese, that's a bonus! I enjoy tutoring, and with my experience, I believe I can be a great help!

I specialize in helping students become better essay writers by teaching them simple and useful tricks to make their English or Composition class less intimidating. I also am passionate about Literature (my area of academic study focused on Epistolary Literature of the 18th century) and I am comfortable teaching it through the undergraduate, AP, and high school level.I believe that learning should be fun for every student-- and if it isn't, you're not doing it right! Two years of experience in this leadership role provided me with strong communication skills, expertise in various instruction strategies, and the ability to excite students about learning. I'm particularly passionate about chemistry, and am excited to share my enthusiasm for science with others. With the life sciences, I emphasize overall understanding in place of rote memorization.
