Learning is a two-way street, where we can gain only so much by ourselves. It is human nature to interact with one another, and gain from that experience something much more than what can be learned individually. It is for that reason that students need to interact with their learning, such as with ...

I am a graduate from SUNY Stony Brook with a Bachelor of Arts in History and a Master of Arts in Teaching. I have tutored and taught students of all ages, from kindergarten through 12th grade, and even some college students. I love to tutor many different subjects, but Social Studies, Math, Literature, and Writing/Language Arts are my favorites. Social Studies and Literature allow students to discuss their own ideas and opinions about the subject, while Math requires more problem solving to best learn the concepts. I believe that learning, not just knowing, comes from asking the question 'why?' Only by thoroughly understand 'why' can learning occur, and learning allows people to successfully engage with the world around them. Outside of teaching, I enjoy baseball, reading, movies, music, and playing a variety of games.

I am an undergraduate student studying Economics and Public Policy at the University of Chicago. I attended the Horace Mann School in New York City. I love teaching and working with students because I feel that there is nothing more rewarding than being able to provide the extra push that students might need to be successful. I am passionate about helping students learn and making sure they are having fun doing so. I'm also happy to talk about anything a student might want to talk about, academically, extracurricularly, or otherwise.

I am a pre-medical undergraduate at New York University studying Global Public Health with a concentration in Chemistry. I have been passionate about education since high school and have been teaching, tutoring, and mentoring students from grades 6-12 and college in a variety of subjects since! I specialize in mathematics and science tutoring as well as standardized exam preparation. In the past, I have helped students achieve significant improvements and success on the SAT, SHSAT, Regents and other exams!I truly believe education is a mutual learning and teaching opportunity and enjoy helping my students achieve a thorough understanding (those "Aha!" moments) and appreciation of whatever they choose to study! In the future, I seek to pursue clinical and pedagogical medicine and enjoy biking, skateboarding, dancing, and philosophizing in my spare time.

I am currently a sophomore at Columbia University in the City of New York. I am pursuing a degree in Earth and Environmental Engineering with a concentration in Sustainability and Energy, and I am minoring in East Asian Studies (specifically, Japanese). After graduation, I plan on working in the renewable energy sector in either the United States or Japan. From September 2014 through July 2015, I worked as a tutoring specialist for a company. I tutored students ranging in age from 13 to 50, in various subjects such as calculus and chemistry. While I enjoy tutoring students in all of the subjects I specialize in, I love tutoring students in physics (specifically, mechanics and waves). Physics is my favorite subject to tutor because while it is more difficult to demonstrate phenomena from other subjects such as organic chemistry, physics is a very prevalent science, so even by rolling my pencil off of a table, I can easily demonstrate physics concepts to my students. For me, hearing "Oh, that makes so much more sense now!" from the students whom I tutor makes my job very rewarding because working with them to find the approach that best caters to their needs feels awesome. As a tutor, I always ensure that my students have a good qualitative understanding of the subjects they are struggling in before helping them with quantitative problems. For example, rather than simply telling my calculus students the formula for integration by parts, I first show them how it is derived so they acquire a good grasp of how it operates.Outside of school, I really enjoy being involved with music. I love singing, playing the drums, piano, and guitar. My favorite genre of music is rock, so playing rock songs with a band has always been one of my favorite things to do.

I strive to personalize lessons and teaching methods for each student to ensure his or her success.I am an energetic, entertaining, and enthusiastic teacher. I am always on time! I am a graduate of Suffolk University Law School and Boston College. Currently, I am a practicing legislative and policy attorney. I am a committed government attorney, who has dedicated many long hours to reading and understanding the American system of government, the organization of state and federal political institutions, and the U.S. and Massachusetts Constitutions. I have had the honor of serving as the Editor-in-Chief of the Suffolk Journal of Trial & Appellate Advocacy, where I reviewed the legal writings of over forty law students in areas ranging from Constitutional and Criminal Law to Employment Discrimination and Bankruptcy Law. I have a deep appreciation for American history, and believe in the guiding words of Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes when he said that "a page of history is worth a volume of logic." I also love getting outdoors and hiking in the Middlesex Fells Area, and coaching youth basketball. I am an avid movie goer, Netflix subscriber, and a diehard Boston Celtics, B.C. and New England Patriots fan. As a teacher, I believe in keeping things conversational and adaptable. I believe that talking things out and understanding the "why" of history, political science, law, and government will go miles in being able to nail down details like dates and names.

While I have a lot of admiration for school teachers and the work they do, I think personalized, private one-on-one tutoring is the best way to teach and learn. Happy students and happy tutors make the best results. That's why I am a tutor!First and foremost, I think it's very important to create a welcoming, respectful and relaxed learning environment that fosters communication and trust between tutor and student and one in which the student feels empowered. I'm a very patient and considerate person but can also be highly competitive and these attributes of my personality come through in my tutoring style. So while it's rewarding to teach children, introduce students to a new subject or help them improve at intermediate or advanced levels, if a student comes to me with a specific request such as helping them ace an exam, I will do my very best to help them reach that goal. I'm always open to questions and discussion, I listen to my students and I pride myself in providing helpful insights and finding fun, innovative and effective ways to teach and help students retain information. I want to help my students distinguish themselves!Growing up I wanted to be a history professor and continue to have an abiding interest in history. I graduated from Rice University in 2006 with a Bachelor's degree in History and in French Studies and then attended the University of Southern California where I received a Master's in Broadcast Journalism and documentary. During my free time I enjoy photography and film production, watching and playing sports, reading about history and health and speaking Spanish.

I am a second-year Political Science major and Mathematics minor at Northeastern University. I hail from St. Paul, Minnesota, but last year's winter here was still the worst I have ever seen. I am currently a member of the Northeastern Debate Society and International Relations Council, which includes participation in Model United Nations, and a featured columnist for the Northeastern Political Review, a student magazine. I have also previously participated in Mock Trial, Speech, Knowledge Bowl, Theater, and Band, where I played the alto saxophone. Last year, I volunteered as a tutor for SquashBusters in Boston, and I just started volunteering as an extracurricular teacher for Citizen Schools.I became a tutor for Varsity because I love being able to guide students towards success. Education is the cornerstone of our nation and our future, and if students are struggling, they absolutely deserve the help that a tutor can give them. I do not believe in teaching directly towards standardized tests; rather, I believe in giving students abilities that they can use not only to get high scores, but to help them develop stronger, more well-rounded skill sets. Things like grammar or writing skills are useful in any field, and I would love to inspire a student who hates math, as I once did, to embrace it and even study it in college. I think that every student has the potential for academic and personal greatness, and I'd be more than happy to help them realize it.
