BACKGROUND:I have been tutoring diverse students in many subjects for over a dozen years now. I believe that a strong education is the backbone of a good life.I am a Summa Cum Laude graduate from Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and a minor in Philosophy and Ethics. I attended as a National Merit and Flinn Scholar. After graduating, I served for a term in AmeriCorps.SPECIALTIES:I tutor in many subjects: most HS subjects, test prep, and college general education, as well as high-level coursework in social sciences, history, philosophy, and other humanities. I can serve as a single, long-term tutor for students that need support in several subjects. I consider myself an "expert generalist," which is a rare specialty at the college level.I enjoy working with students with learning differences. For example, students who need help keeping up with the many reading and writing assignments in college.I also work well with international students and non-native English speakers.SUBJECTS:At all levels: English, writing, economics, psychology, history, philosophy, sociology, political science, ethics, logic. In math: algebra, geometry, introductory statistics. In science: Up to and including introductory college biology, earth science, astronomy, ecology and geography. Also up to high school physics and chemistry.TESTS:Standardized exams: ACT, GRE, PSAT, SAT, GMAT, and many high school AP subjects). For grad school entrance exams, I am strongest with the verbal and writing sections, but also comfortable with quantitative sections. For the military ASVAB test, I can tutor every topic except engineering.OTHER SERVICES:Planning and editing papers up to graduate-level theses, designing research projects, and preparing applications for college admissions, scholarships, IRB, etc.Training effective studying, test-taking, and research skills.

Learning and intellectual growth in students has its fundamentals, as does soccer. Students build from basic comfort to a feeling of being invited, then to a knowledge that they are inspired, as well as an increasing confidence in their own voice as it is elicited in various ways. Subtly they sense the growing realization that they are part of a larger whole???of the human story, of life.I believe in a balance of progressive and traditional teaching. Tutoring one-on-one is the best of teaching. I like to present any given material in two ways, such as aurally and visually, so that various learners can access the depth of the content. An example might be to have them select quotations from Civil Disobedience, put them in their own words, write whether they agree with them or not and create a visual of a selected passage from Walden. Or in addition to an aural discussion of a Scene in Hamlet I will write a web on the board to map both concepts and characters.I believe in growth through learning. I believe it is life in a full sense.

I'm a recent Northwestern grad and NYC transplant, with a passion for reading, fashion, and social media. In addition to tutoring, I've spent multiple years interning in the literary world and working at my university's fashion magazine; I have both a diverse range of experiences and an eye for detail. I don't believe in giving anything less than 110% of my time and effort, especially when understanding the needs of my students.I coincidentally also happen to adore alliteration, fancy fairytales, and constantly consume coffee.I'm currently available full-time as a tutor in a wide range of subjects, though my availability may become more limited in the coming months as my daytime employment changes. I am available by both phone and email; my contact information is available below.Thank you so much for reading!

I graduated from Gordon College in 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations. I focused on political relations in Europe and Latin America. After graduating, I received my Master's in International Relations, where I specialized in Spain-US relations. I have worked or interned for the Department of State, the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and two members of the United States Congress. I also had the opportunity to study at the University of Deusto in Bilbao, Spain, investigating international financial systems during the 2007-08 Financial Crisis. I had my first taste of teaching as an ESL volunteer as an undergraduate. I knew I had a passion for instructing; so while a student, I worked as a Teaching Assistant and later a Graduate Assistant for undergraduate courses. Don't let my Irish-American name fool you, I have worked in Spanish, French, and Catalan at the professional level. I plan to pursue a law degree in the near future. I bring eight years of research and writing and teaching in the US, Spain, Canada, and Chile, and I'm excited to bring my diverse background to the table in order to help you reach your educational goals.

I attended Mamaroneck High School and graduated as a member of the National Honor Society. From there, I went to Emerson College to pursue my BFA in Writing, Literature, and Publishing where I took several intensive literature, analytical writing, creative writing, and public speaking courses. My concentration was in fiction writing and analysis. I also minored in Marketing Communications where I studied social media marketing and web analytics. At both institutions, I was able to tutor several students in English mechanics, reading comprehension, analytical writing, essay structure, and story analysis and composition. Most of my experience in tutoring has revolved around helping older students particularly 11th and 12th graders, and freshman and sophomore undergraduates, but I have also tutored 9th and 10th graders. My favorite subject to tutor is literary analysis! I love talking about stories and helping students identify themes and literary elements, and I am passionate about making sure students understand stories within the historical contexts in which they were written. As for tutoring style, I am all about understanding - both as an instructor, and as a student. I want to understand my student's abilities, struggles, and passions as best as I can, so that I can more effectively help them find themselves in their work and accomplish it to the best of their ability. My style revolves around verbal communication and problem-solving, and emphasizes these qualities in a team setting. I will work with my students in a manner that bolsters their self-confidence and academic independence as I firmly believe these are qualities that lead to a successful academic life. When I am not reading, writing, or tutoring, I enjoy baking, knitting, and drawing. I have a passion for comics and graphic novels, and I probably watch things on Netflix too often. I believe in the power of communication through art, and I love talking about it!

I am a motivated college student. I am a quick-learner. And I have a great passion for teaching and mentoring, regardless of the subject. I grew up in poverty, but through hard work and the motivation of mentors and teachers, I overcame my circumstances. Because I myself know the cost of improving oneself and of overcoming one's circumstances, I expect nothing but hard work, determination, persistence, and a positive attitude. I'm not an unfair person. I don't expect for you to do all the work alone. I will learn whatever material you are learning with you.

I am a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University where I earned by B.S. in Biology, with a minor in Chemistry. Currently, I attend the University of Richmond, where I am working to become a licensed teacher. Over the past 6 years I have had the pleasure of working with students as young as 2nd grade, all the way up to the college level. I prefer the sciences (biology, chemistry, Earth science) and math (elementary to algebra II). When tutoring, I encourage my students arrive at the solution by continuously asking questions, rather than directly giving answers. I also enjoy the use of manipulatives to speak to a wider range of learning styles, and to add an element of fun to the learning process. My experiences have allowed me to effectively manage my time and to work with a wide demographic of students. I look forward to helping my clients succeed in the classroom, and ultimately discover their potential.

I studied at Southern Methodist University (SMU) and graduated magna cum laude in 2017 with two degrees: A Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre Studies (Playwriting). At SMU, I was also initiated into Kappa Tau Alpha, an honor society recognizing academic excellence in journalism and mass communication. After graduation, I spent five years on the staff of The Dallas Morning News (one of the top circulating newspapers in the United States) as a Digital Editor and Staff Writer. I tutor in a broad range of subjects at the college and high school level, including but not limited to American and European history, creative writing, English, essay writing and editing, grammar, literature, news writing, public speaking, Shakespeare, social studies and text analysis. I am incredibly passionate about helping students improve their writing. I firmly believe that writing is a foundational skill that sets students up to comprehend the world around them and become lifelong learners. At its core essence, writing is storytelling, and I train storytellers. When away from my computer, I enjoy cooking, reading, traveling and playing with my dog, a Wheaten Terrier named Doak. I look forward to having a conversation about your needs and how I can assist you in achieving your goals!
