I have worked with all ages ranging from preschool to university students for the past 5 years. I have teaching experience in World History, US History, and Government. Additionally, I just returned from teaching intermediate level English, academic English, gender studies, and History at a university in Poland. My favorite subject to tutor is history because it is fun to make the past come alive but I am able to tutor all of the social studies subjects and English.

In order to pursue my passion for learning, I chose to study philosophy during my time at Colorado College. Philosophy gave me the critical thinking skills necessary to succeed in the wide variety of courses that made up my liberal arts education. Upon graduating, I used those skills to further pursue another passion of mine, rock climbing. I worked as a climbing guide, bringing people from all walks of life into my world and out of their comfort zones. I learned how to gently push people past their fears. I learned how to use a combination of encouragement and technical knowledge to help people reach their goals. I learned how to read people and find the roots of their struggles. Through this, I could discover the best way to approach each individual and create a plan of action that worked best for their unique needs. Through all of this, I learned of my passion for teaching. I went on to start tutoring students and combined both the critical thinking skills and technical knowledge from my degree in philosophy with the teaching skills that I learned from guiding climbing. I worked with students in a variety of subjects from math, to history, to writing. In every subject, I was able to help lead my students into developing their own critical thinking skills. I also encountered some of the same fear that I saw from people 100 feet up a rock face. I used my guiding experience to help one student overcome what had become a debilitating and illogical fear of math in order for her to pass a college placement test (which she had failed many times previously) so that she could go on to pursue her own passion of fashion design. Through all of my experiences, I have continued to pursue my passion for learning, and I hope to cultivate a similar passion in each of my students.

Hi! My name is Becker, I am a student at SOAS University of London, currently pursuing my Masters Degree in International Relations and Diplomacy. I recently graduated Summa Cum Laude from Arizona State University, studying Politics and History. I am a history and politics/government tutor, and I am incredibly versed and educated in both field. As well as studying at SOAS and ASU, I have extensive professional expierence in the political field, most recently working on a Congressional Campaign. I love both history and politics, and so try to make the subjects as fun for the students to learn about as I think they are. Both topics are incredibly complex, so simply memorization is pointless, instead, I try to help my students gain full perspective on the topics, so they learn to enjoy them as well.

I recently completed a Masters in Education Policy from the University of Illinois. I was fortunate to be able to accomplish this fully online while living abroad in Milan, Italy for my husband’s job. We have recently moved back to the DFW area and I am eager to get back into the education sector. Before moving, I taught high school Social Studies for four years. My family instilled in me a love for history at a young age, and now I enjoy passing on this passion to my students. I love finding ways to make history come alive and to make it more interesting than just a bunch of names and dates. There are so many intriguing stories and dramas from the past, and many ways to relate past events to our current lives. It is my desire to engage my students with the interesting background stories of historical figures and discuss the decisions they made and the events they influenced. In the state of Texas, I am certified to teach History, Geography, Government and Economics and feel confident that I can help your student succeed in these subjects. I also have an extensive background in writing, and can help your student improve their writing skills, especially for the writing portions of AP tests. I graduated from the University of Texas with a B.A. in History and Government, as well as earning my teaching certificate. I am eager to once again help students to learn and love Social Studies, especially after all of my travels in Europe and experiences with new cultures over the past two and a half years. I look forward to meeting you and your student!*Photo is of me standing in a WWI trench on the border of Italy and Switzerland!

I recently graduated Summa Cum Laude from New York University, completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drama and a minor in history. The incredible teachers I have had have shown me the power of education, and I love being able to share that with others through tutoring. In my tutoring sessions, I emphasize foundational concepts and principles, and achieve growth through consistent practice and overcoming misconceptions and unhelpful habits. While preparing for standardized tests, I help students feel confident about the knowledge on which they will be examined. I understand that these important tests can be stressful experiences for many people, so I also work with students to develop strategies to overcome any anxiety that might get in the way of a student not demonstrating his or her full potential. I enjoy tutoring a variety of subjects, but I find it especially rewarding to guide students in taking ownership over their writing as they find greater self-expression and explore complex ideas with more depth and clarity.
