Are you constantly pulling all-nighters in preparation for exams? Do you feel like some of your peers seem to know something you don't about how to approach ACT questions? Are you trying to get ahead in your summer courses so that you have more time to enjoy the warm weather? If these, or any other scenario in which you feel like you might need some 1-on-1 tutoring in math, physics, or test prep, I'm your guy! As a recent graduate with my Master's degree in Physics, I've been through the ringer and I'm ready to share the strategies I developed to navigate the demands of high school and college-level STEM courses. Since it has not been long since I was in the exact same position as you, it will be quite easy for me to take a step inside your shoes and meet your where you are at in your learning. I will use this to tailor my teaching to closely match your thought process because I acknowledge that there is no finite way to learn something! So, let's get started!

I recently finished my master's degree in physics at San Jose State University, where I focused on general relativity and quantum mechanics. During my studies, I conducted extensive research projects, including my MS thesis on Geodesics in Black Hole Spacetimes. This background has given me a solid understanding of math and physics, enabling me to explain complex concepts effectively to students. I have three years of experience tutoring at both San Jose City College and San Jose State University, where I have helped college students with math and physics, helping them with their homework assignments and offer explanations for challenging concepts in various subjects, including algebra, geometry, pre-calculus, and calculus, as well as general physics topics like mechanics, electromagnetism, waves, and light. Although I cover a wide range of subjects, I am particularly passionate about teaching general physics topics like classical mechanics and electromagnetism, as well as math topics such as algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. I find great joy in assisting others with their learning journey and witnessing their progress as they grasp new concepts. As a tutor, I strive to create a welcoming and supportive environment that facilitates learning. I tailor my lessons to meet the unique needs of each student, simplifying complex topics by breaking them down into smaller, more manageable parts. I also provide relevant examples to help clarify the concepts. In my free time, I enjoy hiking, playing ping pong, and studying subjects like cosmology and history.

I have one cat, named Sunshine.

I enjoy helping students learn what I believe is one of the hardest languages that has ever existed...physics. We use mathematics to communicate our ideas through it, which can be a very difficult task. I enjoy teaching others math and physics through techniques which I believe are simple and straightforward and also supply a vast amount of examples through past homeworks and exams that I have accumulated over the years.I have had a lot of success with my students and try to keep myself available 24/7 for any questions they might have through texting and email, especially when it comes close to their exam dates.

I love helping students succeed. You don't have to like or think you are good at math or science to do what you need to go to your next level. And if you do like math and science, all the better. I have a Bachelors in physics and a Masters in math. I have taught at the college and university level. I enjoy questions and personal satisfaction with every student's success. Many times a student is very capable but just is struggling with the language of a subject. The key is to not talk to a student in math, but in a language that makes sense to them. With years of college teaching experience, I have had great success in reaching those students who are bright and willing but just need a little boost.

I am currently a student at the University of Colorado Boulder studying Astrophysics. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I am completing my degree from my home in Minnesota! When I graduate, I am hoping to go on to obtain a master's in education and become a licensed teacher. I want to see a world of educational equity and I think tutoring is a great way to get there. I believe it is important to get to know every student, their learning style, and what they need from a tutor before beginning the actual tutoring so the sessions can be more personalized. I love to help in areas of math and science, specifically physics and calculus are my strong points.

First, a little background. I recently retired from the College of Education at Oregon State University where, for the last six years, I was a teacher educator helping to prepare prospective secondary math and science teachers. I held a similar position for eight years at the School of Education at UNC Chapel Hill. Before I moved to higher ed, I was a high school physics, math, and general science teacher in Seattle Public Schools for 15 years. So I've been teaching math and science content and pedagogy for almost 30 years. And before all of that I was an electronics test engineer in the Seattle area for 15 years. Over that time I earned a master's degree in physics from the University of Washington and a Ph.D. in education (physics), also from UW (my BA is in philosophy with a minor in math and physics from UC San Diego).Anyway, though I've retired, I'd like to keep on teaching, albeit on a more informal basis such a through tutoring. As you might imagine, I've worked with all kinds of students from kids with learning challenges to very gifted students. I subscribe to the "teach them to fish" educational philosophy by which I mean that my goal as a teacher has always been to help students learn both the "how" and "so what?" when solving problems in math and science so they will be able to do it for themselves in a variety of situations. For me, it's not enough that a student know how to solve a problem, I want them also to understand why both the content and/or procedure are important and worthy of learning. One of the biggest motivators for me as a teacher is getting students to the "aha!" moment. So, probably the most important lesson I've learned as a teacher and teacher educator is to listen carefully to what students say what students say is the best way for a teacher to really understand what students are thinking. The questions students ask as well as the answers they give are powerful tools to help teachers guide their learning. I've become a very good listener.
