I have a BA in Organizational/Corporate Communications from Northern Illinois University, which I chose based on my lifelong love of reading and writing. I also have minors in both Spanish and Economics.I have always been an avid learner and love supporting others as they learn and expand their skills. My main experiences working with students come from my times spent as a summer school teacher, after-school tutor, and sibling homework helper.I understand that all individuals have different learning styles and that it is important to find the best ways to learn that work for you. I am very enthusiastic about helping students feel accomplished once they have mastered new knowledge and skills.

I am a graduate of The Hotchkiss School, a college preparatory boarding school in Connecticut and a current student at Barnard College, majoring in Economics and minoring in Environmental Science. I am passionate about working with Elementary and Middle School students and particularly enjoy tutoring Math and Spanish. The title “teacher” is special to me, because great teaching inspires the imagination and frees kids to think with an open mind. This freedom of imagination let’s kids comprehend more completely who they are and who they aspire to be. It’s all about possibilities! My personal teaching style is filled with this positive urgency, humor and energy—“Let’s do it and do it now!” Be it a special education class, a remedial class or a college course, kids apply their knowledge and insights in projects. Ideas are applied to writing, mastery of mathematical processes or performance techniques.Feelings of confidence motivate kids and stretch into other parts of life—problems become challenges to tackle, rather than disappointments to avoid. Gaining mastery is supported by trust. Setting achievement goals is risky. Students need to trust their teacher and themselves. Building trust and relationships is another one of my chief strengths. I believe kids learn in a system of relationships and in a culture of learning. Building trust requires follow through—being present, prepared and in command, otherwise kids don’t take the risks. It also means adapting to individual learner’s needs. A great lesson or an appropriate challenge builds trust through understanding. I use an eclectic array of resources from graphic organizers, to drilling, to practiced editing, to sentence starters, to Cornell Notes.. All are a proven way to help structure learning tasks. Without judgment and a positive can-do frame of mind, we tackle what seems impossible!

I have been a high school educator for ten years and am especially interested in helping students to learn communication skills in English, German and other languages. I received a BA from Northwestern College, Watertown, WI and a masters from Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary. I am the World Language department chair at my school and teach all four levels of German, and also have experience in teaching high school Latin as well. My German students who have gone on to college German have consistently tested into higher levels of the program. I also have extensive classroom experience in helping students become better readers and writers in English. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family, watching and playing sports, exercise and writing.

As a proficient writer, I preferred writing essays over taking multiple choice exams back in college. I did it so often that I started assisting others with their work and got amazing results.I'm here to help students reach their educational goals. My focus rests on reading comprehension and writing, but I also excel at tutoring within the social sciences. Students that work with me apply and strengthen learned skills to their assignments. Overall, they will feel confident to successfully complete projects on their own.

My specialties are instructing students in the areas of accuracy in pronunciation, vocabulary, spelling, grammar, and sentence structure. I also enjoy facilitating Business English Communication learning sessions for adults who are getting acclimated to Western culture and the English idioms that are commonly used in the Western Business World as well as the appropriate English idioms used.Instructional aids that have worked best for my class sessions are puppets (for children) and whiteboards (for all ages). I utilize phonetical expressions, e.g., apple pronounced as [a] + [pl] and I believe in the power of repetition to help with remembering vocabulary words and the spelling of words.I have a Bachelor of Science degree with a concentration in Accounting from Rutgers University.
