My name is Yajing Ni. I immigrated from China to America at the age of 11. Through this experience I was able to speak fluently in Chinese Mandarin and English. I have taught Chinese to native American student for past two years. I enjoy bringing Chinese language and culture to the students through interactive and fun interactions.

I am a former New York City public school teacher with experience in English, journalism, economics and global history. I believe that all children can learn and that it is my responsibility to help each student discover which style of learning suits them best. My goal is to help students build stamina—important in an age of increased standardized testing—and provide learning strategies that will help them become life-long independent learners.One of my favorite ways to teach is through the use of questioning—a strategy that dates back thousands of years to Socrates. During tutoring sessions, observers will notice that I will usually ask a series of questions designed to allow the learner to reach a correct conclusion on his or her own. This teaching strategy develops critical-thinking skills and provides a sense of personal satisfaction to the learner that does not come from being simply provided with answers.To keep things interesting and aid retention, students may also be asked to assume the role of teacher during a tutoring session. (Research suggests that student retention increases to 90 percent when the student is asked to teach a concept or skill to another person.)Also, students will sometimes be asked to tell me everything they know about a topic, then be encouraged to write down a series of questions they may have. Our tutoring session then may focus on strategies to help the student answer his or her own questions. (This format for tutoring sessions is suited to students who are struggling in a given subject area and to those who are expecting to continue their education after high school.)As a high school teacher, I was known for using technology in my classroom in order to help every student learn at his or her own pace. Students often participated in online discussions using their cell phones and created essays that were posted online for other students to review.Before becoming a teacher, I was a newspaper reporter and manager at national magazines such as Harper's Bazaar and Fitness. During my career in journalism, I learned that the written word is a powerful tool. I decided to become a teacher to empower students through the use of writing.

I have loved both being a teacher because it gives me an opportunity to be a part of someone's life in a positive and nurturing manner. Prior to teaching, I was a girl scout leader, CCD teacher, and most importantly a mom, and the latter role has been my most rewarding because I loved being our child's first teacher. Teaching is truly a gift, and I believe that each student deserves the best teaching and tutoring methods I have available to me.

I graduated from Tufts University with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and a minor in Computer Science. I was the Music Director of an a cappella group at Tufts for two years and gained experience working with students one-on-one to teach difficult passages and sections of songs. I currently am a Music teacher at a local Sunday school in Somerville, and enjoy working with children and young adults of all ages. I have taken the LSAT and tutor the entire test, though I feel particularly strong about the Logic Games and Logical Reasoning sections.I look forward to working with you!

I am currently updating my teacher certification through Arizona State University, and will be receiving my bachelor's degree in May of 2021 in Secondary Education.I have experience in teaching middle school and high school general science and biology, respectively. I have had a passion for the sciences, because they include a broad range of branches that give opportunities to ask questions and explore a vast array of content.In college I have tutored algebra, geometry, as well as trigonometry. I enjoy teaching mathematics since they tend to be logical and very straight forward.Something that one of my mentor teachers said sticks with me to this day: "They don't care how much you know, unless they know how much you care." Since, I have made it my personal goal to live by that statement. My goal is to build a mutual relationship with my students before I facilitate effective teaching practices.

Little did I know becoming an educator would be more than a career choice; it became a time for my own character education. The years I served as a classroom teacher were as much about me learning as they were about instructing others. Since then, my commitment to support the development and self-improvement of others has not wavered.Ten years as a public school teacher equates to approximately 2,000 students and was a pivotal time in cultivating skills as an instructional designer. It was also critical in honing my abilities as a facilitator who successfully engages participants and adapts instruction to meet diverse learning styles.I am NYS certified English teacher with ten years of instructional, design and assessment experience for both general and honors programs, and a Master of Science degree in Adolescence Education. I specialize in tutoring English, Literature, Writing, Vocabulary, SAT, ACT, NYS English Regents, and general topics related to language arts.

I am currently doing a PhD in Economics from Vanderbilt University, and have a lot of experience teaching economics and math. I am most passionate about learning through research and have been a part of multiple projects on stem cell research and machine learning. Teaching students of the many learning opportunities presented through real world applications has always been a focus of mine. I believe that students are able to obtain a more meaningful and gratifying education when they are able to apply their knowledge into their own lives, and I would like to share that appreciation with them.
