I'm currently an undergraduate at Cornell University studying Biology. During a semester long break from working towards my Bachelor in Arts, I tutored Math to young students at Best In Class Education Center in Fort Bend, Texas. Prior to that teaching experience, I also tutored SAT Math. I was recruited shortly after taking the SAT myself, so it was a fresh and exciting experience for me. I currently tutor a variety of academic and test preparation subjects. I'm passionate about helping students because I have had some difficulty with certain subjects myself, and I understand the frustration of what that is like. My experience with High School Physics made me an advocate of getting help when it's needed. After seeking out assistance, I went from consistently struggling with the subject to graduating as Best Physics Student. I'm a firm proponent of the idea that with enough help, anyone can improve as drastically as I did. In my spare time, I enjoy painting, running and exploring.

I graduated from Occidental College where I earned my BA in English and Comparative Literary Studies with a minor in Classical Studies. I mostly did math when I was in high school (thanks to our Geometry and AP Calculus teacher, Mrs. Stone, who would patiently explain concepts in as many different ways as took for everyone to understand). But when I found myself in a spring freshman writing class (that I had picked from a list for its name alone, 'The Hero vs Death and God') in which we were reading Gilgamesh, The Odyssey, and the Aeneid, suddenly a whole new world of possibilities opened up for me the more I read and learned. Once again, it was the professor who brought the texts to life for us. I went on to study Ancient Greek and Roman literature, art, history, philosophy, language, and linguistics as well as British and American literature, ancient and modern philosophy including both Existentialism and Continental philosophy (as opposed to Analytic philosophy) with that same professor. It was because of him and Mrs. Stone that I wanted to become a teacher; they were kind and patient with us, knew how to explain anything and everything so that anyone could understand it, and they were both able to inspire their students to excel well beyond what they thought they could achieve. So when I got a job teaching middle school Latin and junior English (an ancient Greek literature, philosophy and history survey course no less) at a charter school in my home state, I was extremely grateful for the opportunity to teach exactly what I had studied in school. When the master teacher of the English department learned that I had been awarded 'Distinction' on my Senior Comprehensive Project essays, she had me take over as advisor for two high school seniors who were struggling with their Senior Thesis Project and needed more help. This was highly irregular as first year teachers almost never advised seniors their first year. Each year for nine years I advised three to six advisees (2-3 was considered a full load), almost all of whom earned 'Passes with Excellence' on their essays and thesis defenses. I taught 11th-grade Literature five times, 12th-grade English once, and 19 or so classes of middle school Latin (I, II, and III).I would say that I take an etymological and linguistic approach to Latin and Ancient Greek, and I specialize in detail-centered close readings of literature, poetry, and philosophy with the aim of developing textually corroborated interpretations and the formulation of meaningful theses. I remember what it's like to struggle in difficult classes and subjects, so I know the importance of having a teacher who can render complex ideas and concepts intelligible for those who don't just intuitively 'get it' right away; in my experience, it's been the 'intuitive' learners who make the worst teachers because they have no concept of what it's like to not understand, just like runners with natural talent make the worst coaches because they have no idea what it's like not to have natural talent and have to train from the bottom up, so what ends up happening in both situations is that those with natural talents get all of the attention while those who need help learning and training are left to try to improve on their own. That's not how Mrs. Stone did it, it's not how Professor Stocking has ever done it, so I have always tried my absolute best to follow their example and teach everyone to improve where they are in the process of learning and understanding.

With over 10 years’ experience as an educator I have worked with a diversity of audiences focusing on high school and college students. While working on my undergraduate degree in Biology at Northern Illinois University I started tutoring chemistry, biology, and math. This tutoring experience sparked my passion for teaching. After graduating I started working toward a Master of Science in Teaching at Portland State University. While in graduate school I tutored math and chemistry and was a teaching assistant for undergraduate science courses. Soon after graduating I started working at a local private college teaching math, environmental science, and ecology. Now over 6 years later I still love teaching student’s math and science. My favorite subject to tutor is math because students often struggle with this subject. It is very rewarding to help students overcome their math struggles and succeed in math. My tutoring style includes the following three components, 1) break up the material into small digestible pieces, 2) explain difficult concepts clearly and enthusiastically, and 3) work together as a team to make a plan to succeed. In my free time I spend exploring the woods hiking and canoeing our waterways. I love learning about animals and actually worked at a zoo working with monkeys and elephants.

I graduated from Lewis & Clark College with a BofA in Psychology. Throughout my time in academia I've spent time working with those who want to improve whether it's algebra, chemistry, biology or writing. I get particularly excited when it's time to talk science! Everywhere you look is something new end fantastic. I do bring this enthusiasm into session, and default to drawing out participation with questions, (What would happen if we changed this? What does this term mean to you? Why do you think we are learning this?) Learning is an active process, but it certainly shouldn't be a chore; the world is far too exciting to let education be boring.

I have always had a passion for learning and love to share that passion with others. This inspired me to begin a career in education. After studying at Emory University for several years, I transferred to Kennesaw State University to complete a degree in Middle Grades Education. While my academic focus has been on social studies and language arts for middle school students, I also enjoy teaching science and art. While tutoring, I maintain a positive, authoritative demeanor and engage students using research-proven motivation techniques. I have worked as a substitute teacher and tutor for several years and have led an after-school homework help program. My interests include fitness, drawing, eating spicy food, and exploring cities.

I am a graduate of Bowling Green State University (BGSU). I received my Bachelor of Science in Geology with a comprehensive science minor and a Master of Science in Geology with a Geophysics emphasis from BGSU. I attended the University of Toledo, where I studied in the master's program in Physics and Astronomy and studied water vapor clouds in the Martian atmosphere, and then at Purdue University, where I studied in the Doctoral program in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, working on Computational Geophysics and whole earth mantle convection, with a particular study of the uplift history of the Tibetan Plateau. I have worked as a geophysicist professionally in the oil and gas industry. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about Physics in general, Thermodynamics specifically, and Geology. I am a firm proponent of education, believing it to be critically necessary for an improved quality of life, and I try to impart this appreciation to all my students. In my experience, helping struggling students gain skills builds the necessary confidence to succeed in further studies, and then to carry that success into other areas of life. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, tai chi, baking and cooking, and taking nature walks whenever possible.

I am a recent graduate of Harvard College. I've been working with middle school and high school age children for the past several years and feel very comfortable communicating with students that age. I was a history major in college, but I'd be happy to help out with middle school and early high school math, as well as any help needed with writing or humanities-related courses. Also available for standardized test prep help!
