I received my first degree (B.A.) in mathematics at UC Berkeley, where I fell in love with the beauty and logic of math. Later I went on to complete a master's degree in mathematics at Portland State University, where I was teaching Pre-Calculus as well as a fun class called 'Excursions in Mathematics.' The Excursions class was especially meant for liberal arts students who struggled with traditional math classes but still needed to fulfill a math requirement to graduate.After I finished my master's degree I moved to Finland to do a Ph.D. in mathematics. I was always fascinated with Scandinavia and Nordic culture, so I decided to go there to study. I lived in Finland for 5 years and completed my doctorate in a field called Geometric Function Theory. Although it wasn't required for my studies, I learned the Finnish language while I was there. Finland is a wonderful country, and I will always cherish my time spent and the people I met there.I moved back to the USA after finishing my PhD, and I was hired as a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Hawaii Department of Mathematics. My position included both teaching and research responsibilities. I was teaching all levels of mathematics, including single- and multi-variable calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, advanced undergraduate analysis as well as graduate courses.While I love math and teaching, I found that working working full-time at a university is not for me. The heavy teaching loads and constant pressure to publish research results left me run down and exhausted, and that's not how I want to live and work. I want to enjoy teaching and working on research while also having time to be a person and enjoy life. I recently moved to pursue other interests, while I continue to teach mathematics and work on research in my own time.

I'm an archaeology PhD student at the University of Pennsylvania with extensive teaching experience at the college level. I've taught at Penn, University of the Sciences, and Methodist University in various social sciences, including anthropology, sociology, statistics, public health, and psychology.As a teacher, I'm guided by the idea that what I'm doing with students should be useful to them long-term. Making topics interesting, relevant, and accessible is of paramount importance because it allows students to hone skills that they'll use for the rest of their lives. Teaching is fun for me because I love getting to facilitate and witness my students' breakthroughs. There's nothing better than getting to that eureka moment!

As a junior in high school, I was a math tutor for Algebra I through a school sponsored program. I was assigned 2-3 students that I worked with three times a week throughout the year. My students improved from failing students to B students. I focused not only on helping them understand the material, but also on how to budget their time and how to study. To be a great tutor, like any skill that I've tried to teach a student in these past four years, gets better with practice. I'm thankful to have attended a high school that allowed me the opportunity to offer academic support to my peers. There were no material incentives - the rewards were intrinsic. Thus, I learned to love teaching for its own sake. When I came to college, the opportunities only expanded. I was able to support myself through the first year of college on this skill alone. It continued to be something I enjoyed, and it ultimately led to me directing a tutoring program - the Let's Get Ready program, at my former high school. Now, I am excited to return to a hands-on teaching role, bringing to it all the insight I have gained over the years, from varying perspectives.

I am graduating this May with a B.S. in Cellular Biology and Neuroscience from Rutgers University. I have been a TA here at Rutgers for over 3 years and have taught General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Biology! I manage programs across a spectrum of needs including scientific promotion, research program design and implementation, strategic planning, and financial tracking.I have a variety of scientific interests, which is why I decided to pursue a PhD in epidemiology. I have studied a number of disorders including smooth muscle cell proliferation in heart disease, DNA repair in ataxia telangiectasia, second messenger signalling in pancreatic cancer, and protein folding in hereditary pancreatitis. I am interested in the application of large data set information to appropriately inform clinical decisions and health/environmental policies. Biostatistical ethics and reproducible data are, therefore, important areas of research to me. I am also interested in cost-efficient ways to improve health outcomes, such as diet and stress.I love teaching and explaining ideas--seeing the change on a person's face when they finally 'get' a concept. I especially enjoying teaching scientific writing (including grant writing), basic biostatistics, and biomedical and statistical ethics.My passion for writing includes communicating scientific concepts to the general public, and listening to people in order to understand what they want to know. I have learned, through my work with Dr. Erin Haynes, to also listen to communities, and to value the expertise that they bring to me.Specialties: Some people are creative, some people can spin, and some people know science, but few can combine all three. I make grants better. I bring seventeen years of benchwork, including molecular biology and small animal surgery, as part of my experiential package. Expert in experimental design, career development programs, and some expertise in the design and analysis of human research studies.
