For our second session, the student worked through some math homework. He had a junior high school achievement test the next day, so we went over a couple of test-prep strategies and basic outlines to have a successful test session. He told me that he passed all his quizzes this week, which was certainly satisfying to hear.

In the beginning of the session, we did a practice on finding the limits using the laws of the limits and calculating the average and instantaneous velocity. The second part of the session we calculated limits using the precise definition of limits using € and £. We calculated the delta for the given epsilon using the graph of the functions, then using the formula of the function. Next we found out the delta for the given value of epsilon. Moreover, we proved that limits exist, using a precise definition of limits.

Today was our first session. We began the session by reviewing various mathematical concepts using the student's summer math packet as a guide. I had her complete 3 problems from each page so that I could assess her understanding, and problem solving skills. We moved more deeply into solving equations with one variable as this was an area that she demonstrated a need for additional support. From my assessment, she has a solid foundation in basic math concepts, number sense and operations. She uses algebraic reasoning and demonstrated persistence in solving problems that she had difficulty with. She demonstrated a need for additional support with using algebraic algorithms, as well as strategies for solving complex problems. These are both areas that we will continue to work on in future sessions. I recommended that she continue to practice what we had been working on. She seemed willing and motivated to do so.

The student had homework on vertical asymptotes and holes. We did problems on that until he was comfortable with the material. He also had problems on solving polynomials via factoring and algebraic manipulation (LCD).

We reviewed the last section dealing with graphing points on a coordinate plane and reflecting them. The student was struggling with remembering all the rules for reflection so we took quite a bit of time refreshing her memory and modifying her notes. We worked on order of operations and she did quite well with the concepts. She was grasping it very well.
