I am a graduate at Montclair State University currently studying to be a general education teacher and a teacher of students with disabilities. I believe that with proper supports all children can learn and can grow into their full potential. I also have three years of experience substituting and have previously worked at Huntington Learning Center.I studied Creative Writing at SUNY Purchase, which taught me to write, edit, and critique. Because of this, I love to tutor language arts and writing. My background in writing has taught me to be concise and clear, which helps me explain difficult material and break it down. I also know how to encourage reading, and I know that to make my students better writers, my students will need to be good readers as well.I'm also a great cross-stitcher, and I can solve a Rubik's cube in about two minutes. I love learning new puzzles and crafts.

My continuous evolvement as an educator and the understanding that students learn in different ways, has led me towardsmulti-sensory learning that is active rather than passive. When I work with students, their learning styles and needs for engagement are at the forefront.Daily, I educate students who learn differently, and success has come to my students when I scaffold to make the abstract more concrete. I have incorporated tactile boards, sky writing, active movement, as well as many anchoring visuals.Such student success has also come through a gradual release method that I use as a framework for my lessons. This includes modeling, guided practice, independent practice and a wrap-up closure.Working 1:1 gives me the opportunity to deeply differentiate to my students' specific needs. Hope. If I were to boil all my teaching philosophies down to one word, it would be hope. When in grade-school, I was the student who needed the extra push from a caring teacher to be successful in the classroom; this is why I do what I do - to be that teacher for the student just like me! I have been certified in a program called Love and Logic which teaches adults effective discipline. Learning should be multi-disciplinary. Often history, science, math and writing all blend together. Without that, there is no real learning. This begins with the relationship between teacher and student. There must first and foremost be trust there, so that the student feels comfortable learning with a particular person. This is also important for the teacher so they begin to understand how the student thinks, how the student learns and what obstacles to learning the student may or may not possess.My approach is one of rapport, enthusiasm for learning, enthusiasm for the subject matter and one where I guide the student in the right direction, rather than giving them all the answers. I've been teaching and writing for over twenty years, have a variety of academic and non-academic interests including films, books, sports, music, travel, languages, art, theatre and many more. I consider myself a non-traditional student and a life-long learner. What can I say--I love to learn! As a legal assistant, I originally started school with plans to take business classes to prepare for law school. However, it did not take long to realize that when it came time to make that fateful decision: law or literature, my heart belonged to literature. and art, and history, and philosophy. The study of literature and philosophy, especially, opened up another world for me, a world of new ideas and unlimited possibilities. I hope to share the excitement of that world with my students.
