I graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz and received my Bachelor of Arts in the History of Art and Visual Culture. While attending school, I became an Education Intern at the local museum and taught local history and art lessons to students ranging from kindergarten to 6th grade. This was when I first had a taste of the valuable and rewarding experience of teaching. After graduation, I decided to teach English abroad in Hanoi, Vietnam. I lived there for a year teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) to a wide range of classes from Fundamentals for pre-kindergarteners to Business English for adults. During this time, I began tutoring college level students in Speaking, Listening, Reading or Writing with a specific topic focus. I also have experience teaching the Language Arts, Grammar, Essay Writing, Public Speaking and Debates, Literature, Phonics and Arithmetic here in San Diego. I find that I am most passionate about teaching English and the Arts because I can have so much fun with it! I am a firm believer in making education accessible to all learners, so I plan and prepare my lessons to be dynamic and engaging. During my free time, I enjoy practicing yoga, hiking in Mission Trails, playing my ukulele, listening to old records, cooking, baking, and planning my next travel adventure.

This summer I traveled to the Czech Republic for an international YMCA youth festival, where I was able to learn what other countries are doing regarding education. I have an extreme passion for education and how it correlates to crime, and am pursuing the application process of a doctoral degree in this field. I have experience working with students first-eighth grade in various subjects. I am most passionate about English, Essay writing, and Grammar skills. Tutoring is about finding that spark for students. I try to work with the student to find a way to relate to whatever subject they are struggling with. This means being open and flexible in my styles. When a student sees the light at the end of the tunnel, it is such a rewarding experience. I have found once they can get past their struggles, they become passionate about taking on the next obstacle. I am a student at the University of Oregon, currently in the education program majoring in Elementary School teaching and minoring in Special Education. I have recently extended my studies into a classroom setting, and enjoy working with 4th and 5th graders at Edison Elementary School improving upon their math skills. These students are diverse, varying in understanding, ability, and background, providing me with the tutoring experience I need to understand how to engage all types of learners.I believe students should actively engage in their learning, and should have a hands-on experience when tackling new material. I graduated from CUNY City College’s Biochemistry program with honors in liberal arts and science research. As a freshman, I began workshop leading in Introductory Chemistry courses and, soon thereafter, progressed to Organic, Quantitative and Thermodynamic Chemistry.I enjoyed my interaction with the students so much that, after graduating, I decided to adjunct lecture at a community college. There, I welcomed the exciting challenge of engaging adult learners in an introductory biology course with labs. I am a certified high school math teacher. I have a total of 7 years of teaching high school math and tutoring college math. I understand how struggling math students think. I was a mediocre math student in high school and math was not really my thing. However, in college I had a wonderful math tutor who worked diligently with me so that I really grasped college Algebra and I ended up acing the subject which had always alluded me in high school. It was amazing how much more enjoyable math was once I understood it and looked forward to using it. Instead of an annoying road block, it became an intriguing Class. Education can be given in such a way that virtually everyone can grasp and excel in school, including advanced concepts in mathematics. A weakness of our education system is that often students, whose learning style does not fit the education mold, are forced to fit as a square peg through a round hole. This rigidness and lack of flexibility often creates learners who have apathy or resentment towards math that is unnecessary. In my own practice of teaching and tutoring I have found that often students who were judged to not be able to do complex math could do it with the right tools and guidance. Students who were decent students were also able to perform at a better level as well with improved guidance. The biggest problem in student's understanding they often struggle or are weak in the foundational skills of math for that subject or the math subjects leading up to the current class, and are therefore trying to learn a new concept while simultaneously trying relearn old concepts that were not understood in the first place. Math, more than any other subject, builds on itself. Students have to have a solid foundation or go back and reinforce weak areas in order to master further concepts. Mastery learning in math is paramount. We have to crawl before we walk and walk before we run.

I am a graduate of Penn State University, earning a BS in Elementary Education as well as a minor certificate in Special Education. I have a passion for early learners and someday hope to earn my Reading Specialist certificate. During college, I tutored 3 separate students, two of them being young ELL learners. I worked with these students on homework and any other areas they needed help in. Last school year I taught Kindergarten full time, and this year I am substitute teaching all grade levels. I tutor many subjects but am most comfortable in the elementary arena, especially in the Language Arts! I am a voracious reader and love to pass on my love of literature to students. I believe that every child has their own way of learning and that should be taken into account during lessons and tutoring. I am a big believer in meeting students where they are and helping them to show growth. I am the son of a military officer, and lived the nomadic life of almost all military “brats”. I first attended school, very briefly, in England. We returned to the US, relocated as ordered, and by the time I graduated from High School I had attended at least 8 different schools. So, from my earliest educational experience I learned to enjoy the challenges of continuously adapting to different schools, teachers, and social settings. That experience, and a natural inclination to science and language, allowed me to start helping other students from an early age. My first recollection of helping another student was while in 7th grade helping a 9th grader reason through an algebra problem. I did not know algebra, but I could help him see the problem in a different way that allowed him to understand and solve it. So, by that reckoning, I have been mentoring, tutoring, teaching or doing research for about 50 years now, and have never lost my sense that a main purpose of a tutor or mentor is to help the student see a problem or challenge in a way that makes sense to the student. My experience has been that once the student finds their own way of looking at problems and challenges, learning becomes the natural process it should be. The student begins to enjoy learning and discovery, and will pursue education as far and fast as nature and circumstances allow. I am a career scientist who has observed that verbal communication is one of the most important skills a scientist can have. I am comfortable tutoring various sciences, English, ESL, math and algebra at all educational levels. I enjoy travelling, fishing, and the outdoors, but actually just enjoy life.

I have also worked as an art teacher through Explorations Summer Academy and taught 6th grade English at a summer school.My tutoring experience includes: tutoring African refugees living in Oregon, tutoring children in Ecuador, teaching preschool as an AmeriCorps member in a low-income community in California, and tutoring children living with their families in Bolivian prisons. Some fun facts about me are that I played varsity lacrosse in college and am highly proficient in Spanish. In my spare time, I paint murals and attend Zumba classes.
