I have been a peer tutor for more than three years, and have worked with students in all age groups. I am comfortable with most locations- classrooms, homes, and public places. As a founding member of Tutors For Opportunity, an international tutoring nonprofit, I have worked with students from a variety of cultural and educational backgrounds. These experiences have allowed me to develop a core teaching method for each subjects, and anticipate many of the conceptual difficulties facing students. I believe that in order to succeed, students need to see learning as an engaging, rewarding, and fun challenge. Through encouragement and positive feedback, learning and achievement become less of a chore and more something of which a student can be truly proud. Outside of work, I love to workout, I enjoy the occasional Netflix and Food Network binge (British crime dramas are my favorite), and I, of course, love to read. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about English, Spanish, writing and math. I love teaching using fun, hands-on experiences because I know this is the best way to learn. Working with Varsity Tutors, I hope that I can help students to teach themselves and to find out what fascinates them most. Sometimes the ideas that interest a student most aren't taught in a classroom. In school, often I'd prefer to teach myself to play the guitar rather than listen to a lecture on the crusades, or read Othello cover to cover rather than a dry, context-less except in a textbook. What's important is to find the intersection where your interests and your academic obligations meet. When you can think about classroom material in terms of activities you'd pursue whether or not it appears on the syllabus, understanding emerges. I would like to help you find a different, individuated approach to learning.
