I worked as a literary journal editor for twenty years and then went back to school to get a Masters in Library and Information Science. I love being a librarian, doing research, helping people of all ages find the answers to whatever questions they have. My favorite subjects are history and biography, but I'm pretty interested in everything, including politics and current affairs. My undergraduate degree was in education and I've been teaching in one form or another for about thirty years. I have one daughter in high school, and another who is a freshman in college, so they keep me up to date on what's being taught in schools in 2017.

I am a current sophomore at Yale University, studying Environmental Engineering and Global Affairs. I spent four years tutoring K-12 students in reading and math, and I believe in the importance of appreciating the process of learning and mastering concepts.

From mastering basic study skills to writing a killer college application essay, I want students to feel confident with their ability to communicate ideas effectively. My experience as a tutor, mentor and editor has provided me with the opportunity to help a variety of students, from kindergarteners just learning to read, to high school seniors writing the essays that will gain them access to top-tier universities. In my years as a teacher's assistant for college freshmen, a workshop teacher at 826 Chicago and a literacy tutor with at-risk kids in a low-income elementary school in Ohio, I have turned students who professed to hate Reading and Writing into confident and creative writers. I have also helped students excel in History, Mathematics and particularly enjoy helping students exceed their own scoring expectations on the SAT.As a graduate of the Oberlin College Creative Writing Program, I believe that every writing assignment, from historical essays to Japanese poetry to science term papers, has the possibility to enthrall and fascinate. I believe that all writing is creative writing, and that in every assignment can be approached with equal measures of enthusiasm and diligence. I am an excellent teacher of the building blocks of language, including Phonics and Grammar. As Joan Didion once said, "Grammar is a piano I play by ear." I have been working with kids in a teaching environment since I was 14, when I worked as a teacher's aide at my local Hebrew School. In 2012, I spent the summer teaching teens how to live in the backcountry and repair trails in the White Mountains. I have been tutoring for the past year in English, writing, math from elementary through high school levels, standardized tests, and chemistry. I enjoy tutoring for the SAT and ACT the most; I feel like every problem is a puzzle and I love helping students learn how to work the puzzles themselves. My philosophy for tutoring is if one explanation doesn't work, try to explain in another way.
