I am a writer of nearly ten years. In this realm, I have focused mainly on short fiction stories as well as the odd novel. In another life I also taught yoga regularly for a year, a discipline in which I learned to teach from my own experience and convey myself in front of large audiences.

I'm Heather, a social worker in Portland, OR. I graduated summa cum laude in 2018 from Willamette University, a liberal arts college on the West Coast, with a 4.0 GPA. I am a graduate of Luther College, a liberal arts school in Decorah, IA. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and Religion, with a minor in Social Welfare. Throughout college, I tutored many students in high school and college level math. I loved the process of helping people through math problems, so after graduating I served in the MN Math Corps as a Math Enrichment Tutor, where I learned research based teaching methods to tutor middle school students who were below proficiency in math. Currently, I am certified to tutor a broad range of math subjects ranging from elementary math to pre-calculus, as well as ACT Math and GRE Math/Verbal test prep. Through my experience, I've found that the best method of tutoring is to tailor it to each student's learning style (every concept can be taught/understood in multiple ways), and make sure the student actually understands what he/she is doing versus just learning equations and methods to complete assignments. I am very passionate about tutoring math as I love empowering people, and I believe mathematics is a vital subject to learn and understand. In addition to tutoring, I have worked as a data analyst for a market research firm near Chicago. In my free time, I enjoy keeping up on current events, reading (I love Harry Potter and Hunger Games!), Ultimate Frisbee, playing guitar and piano, and learning economics.

I am particularly passionate about language arts and I hope to help learners realize the beauty, complexity and joy of reading and writing well. I believe that education is transformative and necessary--and that one's education is a lifelong journey. In my free time, I enjoy reading, traveling, yoga and exploring Portland's many offerings.

I am so excited to teach online this year. For the last seven years, I taught all over the country (Charleston, SC, Nashville, TN, Portland, OR, and Vancouver, WA) and also earned a master's degree in education from Johns Hopkins University along the way.

I am a graduate of Reed College with a degree in Classics. I came to Portland five years ago all the way from New York city and fell in love with the community and landscape of the Pacific Northwest. I worked as a peer tutor in high school and college, and have tutored English, Math, Reading, Writing, Attic Greek, Latin, and Humanities. I also spent five years as a Hebrew School teacher where I worked with elementary age children teaching basic Hebrew and Jewish studies. I'm passionate about tutoring because I believe every student can achieve any academic goal they set their mind to as long as they are given the tools for success. I aim to turn every "I can't" into "I know I can." I want to instill in my students a confidence in their own academic abilities and a true love of learning. I like to work with a student's unique skills to help them master new or difficult material. My ultimate goal is to help my students truly comprehend the material, and be able to apply what they have learned when encountering new problems and questions. When I'm not working I spend my time hiking at the Sandy River Delta with my husky puppy, Kili, or whipping up new vegan recipes. I love to read, especially modern fiction and historical biographies, and try to travel as much as I am able; my most recent trip was to Italy, and this winter I am heading South to the Antarctic.

I am fluent in both conversational and academic Spanish. Over the past five years, I have taught a variety of physical science courses at the collegiate level to both pre-college, college, and advanced high school students from which I have cultivated a strong student-centered teaching philosophy based on responding to the needs of my students. While I tutor a variety of subjects, my favorite is Geology because it allows me to always be connected to what happens around me. In my spare time, I enjoy sewing, reading, running, swimming, and hiking. I love traveling the world any time I have the chance.
