From the moment I stepped into high school, the former head of my high school's math department told me to consider teaching. I recently moved to NYC from Pittsburgh, PA, where I have lived my whole life up to this point. I went through grade school, high school, and college all within one mile of each other (all on the same street). Currently, I spend most of my time wandering around the city, learning its ins and outs, as well as reading any book I can carry around town. Working with Varsity Tutors, I hope that I can help students to teach themselves and to find out what fascinates them most. Sometimes the ideas that interest a student most aren't taught in a classroom. In school, often I'd prefer to teach myself to play the guitar rather than listen to a lecture on the crusades, or read Othello cover to cover rather than a dry, context-less except in a textbook. What's important is to find the intersection where your interests and your academic obligations meet. When you can think about classroom material in terms of activities you'd pursue whether or not it appears on the syllabus, understanding emerges. I would like to help you find a different, individuated approach to learning.

I have a Bachelor Degree in Neuroscience from The Johns Hopkins University. I am a native of Texas and decided to move back here to Houston after I graduated from undergraduate. I am very well versed in the mathematics and sciences, able to provide knowledge and comprehension of higher level material as well as a firm, confident foundation of the basics.I have experience in working with students ranging from children in pre-academic years to young adult in pursuit of a college degree. During my undergraduate years, I was involved in the founding and management of a program tutoring youth who had classroom troubles or learning disabilities such as dyslexia and ADD. My friendly personality, quick-critical thinking skills and ability to adapt to various learning styles allow me to create innovative ways for the student to learn the information without being overwhelmed. While I initially stumbled upon my knack for tutoring by teaching others as a method of studying for my own courses, I soon discovered that I had a natural ability to communicate information to others and to help people understand subjects they had previously struggled with.As a Master of Fine Arts candidate in Creative Writing at Rutgers University, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English (2018), I am often the first person my peers go to for help understanding difficult literature, reviewing their essays, or tackling a difficult writing prompt. Through that, I now see that tutoring is a wonderful way for me to combine my enthusiasm for reading and writing, my success as a graduate student, and my desire to help others. We helped each other break down difficult texts into their essential parts, thus making class discussions and term papers easier to manage. After graduating with honors, I started working at a small community college in Dearborn, Michigan. At Henry Ford Community College, I taught two sections developmental composition. My classes focused on grammar, usage, voice, and creation. Most of my students were either students who spoke English as their second language or who were first generation college students. After a year at HFCC, I spent seven years teaching English as a foreign language in South Korea. I mostly worked with elementary and middle school students, but I did have some adult students as well. I loved helping non-native English speakers improve their language skills, and I loved seeing my younger students develop in all language areas.Outside of teaching, I enjoy reading, listening to music, and spending time with my wife and dog.
