Hi! I'm Timmy. I look forward to working with you.I have a wide range of experiences that I think are valuable for an array of different students in need of some help. Graduating from Manhattan College in May of 2012, I received my bachelor of science in chemical engineering. In addition to that, I was a Resident Assistant for the last 2 years of my college career, which was an additional responsibility, but an invaluable experience nonetheless. Being a Resident Assistant meant counseling and creating a positive learning environment for 140+ students in 2 years. My time management and people management skills were sharpened from this time spent with strict deadlines and colorful personalities. My tutoring experience is vast because I have so much more to offer than simply a high GPA and some academic knowledge. In my experience, some of the smartest people in the world are the worst teachers, because they can't relate to the student. Whether its math, physics, chemistry, psychology, astronomy, reading or creative writing, I've experienced the ups and downs in these fields of thought and at this point I've assimilated a great deal of information. I know the feeling of hunger when I don't get some concept, and I also know that satisfying feeling of understanding the concept. I've counseled roommates over their relationship problems, I've looked into the future with students as they outline their dreams, and I've been tutored and have tutored my fellow chemical engineering classmates countless times at 4am working long into the night to understand complex concepts. My teaching style is that of the captain of a ship in the ocean. At the beginning of the tutoring session, I want to know where you are, and what you already know. Once we've established what you comprehend and what you don't comprehend, then we can go along and identify within the time we have for a particular session, where you want to go. Once the map is marked and our sail is set, and our goal is set, then we can go ahead and chart our path, and do what we need to do to achieve that goal. If you have a homework you need help on, perfect. If you have an exam to study for, perfect, show me your notes and homework and we'll go over them and I'll make new questions for you. If you have nothing, and need to start from scratch, that's fine too. I always bring my iPad and can create a lesson for you on the spot.My style is vibrant and energetic, yet calm and assuring. I will challenge you. I will not give away the answers for you; I will make you explain the concepts to me after I help you understand them more concretely. I have a magnificent imagination where I'll relate the funniest, most absurd ideas together so that a concept makes sense. Lastly, I am extremely attentive and observant to people that are around me. I will identify the language you say to me and will then know the type of learner you are, and the way you process information best. This allows me to cater the tutoring experience to you, and make you feel the most comfortable in learning what you need to learn.I am a lifelong learner. I live everyday as if it was my last, and learn everyday as if I'll live forever.

ACT Math Tutor • +20 Subjects

I am an experienced tutor of high school and college students. I successfully enhance the performance of those struggling and those seeking to maximize their potential. High school students needing remedial attention, and the motivation to improve their grades in geometry, algebra, trigonometry, pre-calculus and calculus classes as well as the math component of SAT, ACT or AP exams would find my thoughtfulness, creativity, kindness and nonjudgmental individualized approaches highly effective. College students completing courses in calculus, abstract algebra or other math courses, as well as the math section of the GRE or other examinations assessing quantitative aptitudes will quickly identify why professors and students alike praise the clarity and effectiveness of my instruction and tutorial style. I have with equal effectiveness addressed issues of those confronting failure and those wishing to be coached to superior academic attainment.I recently earned an honors degree in mathematics, Phi Betta Kappa, from the University of Rochester. There, I gained over 4 years of experience tutoring students of varied ability levels, learning styles, and academic backgrounds. As a teaching assistant multiple times for upper level college math courses, I enhanced the success of mathematics majors. And, I have worked with college as well as high school students individually and in small groups in many settings. With a deep, holistic understanding of a range of mathematical material, I clearly explain abstract concepts in a simple and understandable way. I specialize in any level of mathematics from basic algebra to calculus as well as higher-level math, such as abstract algebra, and can facilitate positive outcomes for quantitative components of the math sections of standardized tests including ACT, SAT, SAT and GRE. Tutorial efforts are not limited to those needing remedial tutoring. Supportive efforts targeting those seeking to maximize grades for advanced math courses are also within my repertoire. While proud of all personal academic, teaching and tutorial achievements, I am always most proud of student accomplishments.Thank you for considering me as a tutor who can enhance your mathematics learning skills and yield the outcomes you so desire and deserve.

Adult ESL/ELL Tutor • +51 Subjects

I am a student at Brown University, where I am pursuing a Bachelor of Science in psychology. I employ a student-centered approach to tutoring, grounding the session in the student's knowledge of what topics it would be most beneficial to review. I typically begin a session by asking a student if there is any material they have learned since the previous session whose reasoning they would like for me to walk them through. I then help the student work through problems or questions that employ that understanding. My favorite subject to tutor is math; I love helping students understand the logic of a subject in which they may have been relying for years on memorization. I have been tutoring since 2016, and I have experience teaching math, science, language arts, history, French, and study skills to students in elementary, middle, and high school. I currently focus on math (pre-algebra, algebra, geometry), English, test prep, and essay writing.

I have a Bachelor Degree in Neuroscience from The Johns Hopkins University. I am a native of Texas and decided to move back here to Houston after I graduated from undergraduate. I am very well versed in the mathematics and sciences, able to provide knowledge and comprehension of higher level material as well as a firm, confident foundation of the basics.I have experience in working with students ranging from children in pre-academic years to young adult in pursuit of a college degree. During my undergraduate years, I was involved in the founding and management of a program tutoring youth who had classroom troubles or learning disabilities such as dyslexia and ADD. My friendly personality, quick-critical thinking skills and ability to adapt to various learning styles allow me to create innovative ways for the student to learn the information without being overwhelmed. I can break down complex concepts so that they can be pieced together and understood, not just memorized. I also did work with my fellow undergraduate peers at the time.I look forward to sharing techniques, methods, and strategies to provide to tools necessary to succeed academically. I am often considered a 'fun' tutor by the students and a 'results' tutor by their parents. In my free time, I enjoy playing basketball, watching sports, playing with my two dogs, practicing martial arts, and working with computers and other technology.

I am extremely patient and will make sure the student I'm working with truly understands what we're working on. The great thing about tutoring one on one is being able to go at each student's pace and work with their unique learning styles. I'm personally very visual and need to draw a picture to figure out a problem. I enjoy learning about the student's interests and incorporating them into the lesson to make it more fun and interesting. I've been working in education for about 5 years. I taught preschool and 4th grade and have tutored ages 4 to 18. My favorite subject is Math, but I enjoy working with all subjects.

I am a graduate from Sarah Lawrence College, class of 2014, studying literature, theatre and psychology. Fun fact: I love dogs, good New York Theatre, ramen noodles, and Jane Austin Novels. I ended up here at Varsity tutors, because I am passionate about teaching. It is something that I also plan to go to grad school for to teach either at a high school or collegiate level. It is something that I have slowly discovered throughout my college career. I have had the great pleasure of teaching 4 summers in a row at an art program in Westchester in creative writing and theatre. Later I went on to tutor in the more academic realms during college, however I still found creativity to be an essential part of reasoning. The art of teaching is a collaborative process. It is a dialogue between both the teacher and the student--a mutual process of learning. While in school, I taught a few middle school aged student with my skills in writing, essay, literature and language arts. Those wonderful students taught me how tutoring is more like being a guide than it is posing as the answers at the back of a text book. I want each student to find their own voice, which is why I believe communication is the essential tool in the learning process in order to create cogent and organized arguments. It is a way to discover, to test ideas, and even to have fun in the process.

I am a cum laude graduate of Syracuse University, where I received my undergraduate degree and Western New England University, where I received for Juris Doctor in law. I earned my Bachelor of Arts in two majors; English and Public Policy. In addition, I am a member of the New York State Bar and I exclusively practice immigration law in New Jersey. Besides helping my clients to understand their legal rights, I am passionate about helping children learn and improve upon their reading, writing and presentation skills. It is so important to understand how to be a successful communicator and this only happens after having a strong foundation in English. As the mother of two teenagers, I continuously help my children to develop these skills. In addition, because of my training as an attorney, I understand how to craft essays and arguments in a persuasive manner. I have also delivered webinars, seminars and community presentations to groups large and small. All these experiences have been so much fun-I love engaging people to learn and ask questions. Most importantly, I am patient and encouraging with my students so as to create a positive learning experience.and I look to create a positvie lea. as I am playing attorney by day.I am passionate about Since graduation, I have traveled extensively, tutoring children of immigrants in California for the "No Child Left Behind" program; adults in Manhattan looking to improve their English (as I am a certified ESL instructor); and private clients in the Veneto region of Italy. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about English, Literature, and History. In my experience helping struggling students prepare for Standardized Tests, we always seem to have the most fun (with remarkable advancements) prepping for the Critical Reading and Writing portions of the exams. I am a firm proponent of education, believing it to be absolutely necessary for an improved quality of life, and I try to impart this appreciation to all of my students. In my spare time, I enjoy reading that which enriches my life, yoga, running, and the odd game of ice hockey.

I am a 2016 graduate of New York University with a double major in Economics and Dance. I graduated in a three year time span with both degrees and currently am a professional dancer and teacher. While in college, I lead many economics and math study groups for my fellow colleagues and was a Freshman Resident Assistant my last year of college. While I am not rehearsing for performances, I teach dance to students ages 8-18 and have been doing that for over four years now. My favorite subjects to tutor are middle school - high school math and economics - focusing on microeconomics including AP microeconomics. While tutoring and teaching, I am a huge advocate for not understanding just how to solve the problem, but realizing why we are doing the steps in order to achieve the final solution. Not only am I trying to get the person to understand the problem, but teaching how to be a creative and independent thinker when approaching an unknown question. Outside of dancing, tutoring, and teaching I love to play sports such as soccer and volleyball, as well as travel as much as possible. My personal future goals will be to obtain my masters/phd in economics and economic policy and eventually become a top policy maker within the government.
