Today the student needed help mostly with math. After discussing two practice problems in-depth, he was solving the equations quickly and accurately. After studying language arts the rest of the session, we went back to review the math work, and he was amazingly quick to solve review work. We also covered ways to check answers on linear equations by "plugging-in numbers." We covered reading comprehension, followed by sentence structure. Identifying the different parts of the sentence (verb, subject, object, etc.) will need more work. Vocabulary words come easily, and he is able to use context fairly well to discern meanings of previously unseen words. I recommend on days we don't meet, to read 15-20 min a day from either class work, or self-selected works.

The student will have a test on Thursday regarding coordinate planes, reflections, and shapes. We looked up practice problems online and completed many of them. After we did some of the practice pages, we did upper level practice to make sure that he understood the more advanced concepts (since he is in advanced math). He seemed to have no problem with the work and got most of the questions right--we practiced the ones he got wrong multiple times until he understood them. Then, since we had some extra time left, I asked him if he had any other homework, and he told me about two assignments he had for English. He completed the planning for one of them that is due this week. In the last few minutes of his session, he practiced European geography for social studies online, using a link his teacher posted on his blog. After our session, he was caught up on all his work and prepared for the rest of this week. For next week, I will try to find some advanced math worksheets that we can do if he doesn't have any homework because it could help him prepare for his final.

Tutoring review by Kori in Hendersonville, TN
Student 1 worked on word problems in which she was required to set up algebraic expressions. The later problems also required her to isolate the variable -- she began by using guess and check to solve these problems until she was reminded that she could do it faster analytically. Student 2 continued to work on solving systems of linear equations analytically, and then learned how to solve them graphically. The latter method also gave us the opportunity to review plotting lines in slope-intercept form.

Continued with normal distribution and significance testing. She just needed a review on when to implement certain tests and the standard errors needed to conduct them. We reviewed some questions and identified key words that identified the test needed to answer them. We then went over a newspaper article and I showed her the statistics behind its statements. I then connected the article to significance testing so that she could understand how the article could make such statements. We then reviewed the rest of her study guide to make sure that she was prepared for her exam. I showed her what to include in her review sheet and what to expect come test time. She felt much more comfortable with the material by the end of the session.

We discussed decimals, fractions and percents. We reviewed the practice problems for the student's math exam. We reviewed the correlation between decimals, fractions and percents and how one can be used to identify or solve the other. He had some questions about ratios, it was challenging for him to identify equal ratios that had different numbers.

Tonight we finished the last chapter section from last session and continued to the law of sines and cosines. At first the student seemed intimidated by the formulas for these laws, but I was able to work through some practice problems with her and showed her an easy way to memorize the equations associated with the laws.
