I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I recently graduated from the Evans School of Public Policy and Governance at the University of Washington with my Masters in Public Administration. I was the youngest in my class. And, I know, I know, what is an MPA? My standard response is that it is a business degree for the public sector, i.e. non-profits, foundations, government work, etc. The courses included Stats, Econ, Leadership, Data Analysis, Environmental Policy, and others. Before earning my MPA I completed my undergraduate studies at UW where I majored in Political Science. I have taken many courses in American and World History, Political Science, Governmental Studies, and all of these involved lots of writing. My time in graduate school sharpened my writing and critical analysis skills, which I find quite valuable. I also have experience with some Math courses, it just depends on the course. Outside of the classroom you will often find me playing or watching soccer, or traveling to some country whose language I don't know.

As a recent graduate I believe that I can provide a tutoring experience that few others can offer.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe every student has a unique learning pattern. Not everyone learns the same way. A teacher, or in my case a tutor, must be flexible and creative in order to successfully help students with their learning. I am attentive, pragmatic, and level-headed, which aids me in teaching situations.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

A first session should be productive, yet fun. First impressions are hugely important, and if the student - tutor relationship starts off on the wrong foot, then that could lead to problems down the road. I would likely begin the session with simple conversation to get to know one another before delving into the coursework.
