Martrice: Oshawa tutor
Certified Tutor
My postsecondary college experience began at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA. I obtained my Bachelors of Arts in English with a minor in Philosophy. My interests within each were in Modern Studies. I then completed my Masters of Science in Educational Administration: Collaborative Leadership with School Principal Certification at Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA. I am currently working towards my Doctorate in Educational Leadership with a focus in Special Education Leadership.
I formally started tutoring in undergrad. I began with pre-school and early elementary students who needed intensive intervention instruction in reading and writing. I then tutored middle school and high school aged students who were involved in the juvenile justice system or in the foster care system. It is actually my work with these groups of students that lead me to forgo my Law School plans to instead move to Baltimore to teach Secondary Special Education.
When I began teaching, most of my tutoring then shifted towards supporting adult learners in college writing, over-aged high school students trying to recover credits, and general high school students with academic help in a variety of subjects, skills, and with college application writing. Currently, I also tutor adjudicated youth at a local detention center.
My favorite subject to tutor is English/Language Arts because I like to support students in making text to self or text to world connections. It is also very rewarding to see students grow and hit their fluency or accuracy or comprehension targets. However, I must admit, tutoring students in basic math and science is also rewarding and very fun. Watching students mind work as they figure things out is so energizing!
My tutoring approach is that of a Facilitator or Instigator of Learning. I build connections or bridges for students to cross, then collapse and support the student in making their own connections.
Outside of teaching and tutoring I like to cook, bake, and travel. I am vegan so I am always trying to whip up something fresh and tasty to share with all my friends and family. My travels are often to some quiet and relaxing location where I can taste good local food and just enjoy the natural views, waterways or beaches, and go sightseeing.
