I am an English major and potential Secondary Education minor at Boston College. I hope to concentrate on creative writing, so naturally it is my favorite subject to tutor. In assisting students with writing at Boston Latin, I have found that some students have a natural turn for writing essays and need little more than encouragement and editing. With most students, however, writing is not a skill they can effortlessly pick up, and creativity is not instantly fluid. Bearing that in mind, I use a Socratic method to draw out ideas and key words and phrases when helping students come up with responses to creative writing essay questions, i.e., the kind given on SATs, ACTs and on college essays. Usually, by the end of the session, they find out that they need a lot less help than they thought! I have also done a fair amount of math and science tutoring with middle and high school students, which is almost easier, since full comprehension can be immediately and clearly demonstrated. I generally design some sort of worksheet in order to walk the student through the process of figuring out the general concept in a unique way; for example, I will use an angle maze to teach geometric angle theorems. I am a proponent of the mindset that learning to learn is much more important than learning pure information, so I always focus more on the process than the outcome. I love to teach, and I hope to work in a high school some day!

I am currently a graduate student at Texas State University, pursuing a specialist degree in School Psychology. A major deciding factor in my career choice was the field's emphasis on helping all students do their best at school and at home, which directly applies to my approach to tutoring. I love to learn and I love helping others feel successful in their classes. I have been informally tutoring peers and my younger siblings from a young age, and continue to do so today. In high school, I was recognized as a National Merit Finalist by the College Board for my PSAT and SAT scores. I took nine different AP exams (World History, US History, European History, Physics B, English Lit, English Comp, Biology, Psychology, and Statistics) and thus became very familiar with how those tests work, as well as what goes in to preparing for them, emotionally as well as academically. I graduated in June 2012 as the third in my class of over 600 students and continued my education at Texas A&M University as a psychology major with minors in neuroscience and Spanish. I graduated from Texas A&M with a Summa Cum Laude distinction in May 2015 and went straight into my graduate coursework.Given my own testing experiences and the value I place on higher education, I love to help others feel as confident as they can when they walk into that testing room, whether for AP, ACT, SAT, or GRE exams. The process of applying to colleges and graduate programs can be very stressful at times, so if I can help you feel prepared to do your best, I would love to do so! That being said, I enjoy working with all ages and as I am a Liberal Arts person at heart, my favorite academic subjects are psychology, history, and any English class that gives me an excuse to reread a Jane Austen novel. Though I do not promise to know all the answers, I can guarantee that I will do my best to help students know where and how to find them. I believe that tutoring is most effective when a student comes to acknowledge and utilize the strategies that are best suited for their learning style, which they can then take with them into other subjects and in their future academic endeavors.Outside of the academic arena, I love to read, watch movies, spend too much money on craft supplies at Michael's, and volunteer with kids.

I'm an experienced reading, writing, and ESL instructor who has taught both adolescents and adults in high school and pre-college programs. During my undergraduate years, I studied Spanish at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and participated in study abroad programs at El Centro Bilinge and La Universidad de Las Americas in Mexico. While completing my Bachelor's, I tutored classmates in English and assisted them with proofreading essays. Later, I completed a Master's of Education in Bilingual/Multicultural Education through Northern Arizona University. While studying for this degree, I volunteered at a junior high school and taught ESL classes there. After graduation, I moved to Oregon and began adjunct teaching for a community college in their Adult Basic Skills Program where I taught ESL, PreGED/GED Language Arts, Visual Arts, Graphic Design, basic computer skills, and pre-college Reading/Writing courses. I enjoy teaching ESL and English the most because of the opportunities to help students increase their vocabulary and express themselves creatively through writing. My first goal when teaching is to raise a student's confidence in their communicative abilities and expand upon their background knowledge, so that they are able to increasingly take on more difficult assignments. I strongly believe that confidence is the key to succeeding in any subject. In combining high levels of confidence and a well-rounded education, one will have more opportunities for career, social, and personal growth. Outside of teaching English, I'm also a photographer who enjoys story-telling through visual imagery. When I'm not in the classroom or the studio, I'm out hiking and appreciating the beauty of nature around me.
