American Sign Language Tutor • +18 Subjects
Privet! Hallo! Hello! Salut! Hola! I am a native Russian, born in Rostov-na-Don, and grew up speaking Russian as my native language. After being adopted and coming to the states, I quickly mastered English. I am currently in the process of being a certified free-lance sign language interpreter. I began my Spanish, French, and German studies since the 8th grade and I have never looked back. I knew at a very young age that I would want a career and life centered in the complexity and beauty of languages.Languages are my passion and I am constantly driven to discover new words, slang terminology, and expressions as they are relevant to specific formal and social situations. My dream career is to work as a translator/interpreter at the United Nations one day and I believe that becoming a Varsity Tutor will give me solid skills and training to achieve that goal. In my personal and professional opinion, I believe fluency is acquired at different levels and specific situations, however, in order to be considered fluent in a foreign language, one must be able to read, write, speak, and comprehend most if not all aspects of everyday speech including formal and informal circumstances.I have a strong passion to teach and apply languages beyond the classroom and see a language thrive through music, videos, journals. Alongside a welcoming personality, and keen sense of professionalism. It would be a privilege to work as a tutor for any prospective student who wishes to strengthen their linguistic skills. Spasibo! Danke! Thank You! Gracias! Merci!

Algebra Tutor • +23 Subjects
I received my Bachelor of Science in Biology from Duke University with a concentration in animal behavior. I enjoy Biology because it sheds light on who we are and where we are from, plus it is a great excuse to be outside. I have experience teaching people who struggle with English from teaching in Taiwan as well as tutoring SAT prep locally to immigrants. My strongest subjects are Math and Science. When I teach I try to use examples and explain some study methods I use to make learning faster. I also know a few tricks to help save time and make the standardized test taking process a little bit smoother. Right now I am working on getting my pilot licenses and when I have some free time I enjoy music, basketball and video games.

12th Grade Math Tutor • +61 Subjects
I'm a recent mathematics graduate from the University of North Texas. I do research in algebra and geometry, and I also love to teach. I've been tutoring for over 3 years now privately and with a company called Mathnasium. I have grown to become very passionate about teaching and I'm constantly trying to improve my technique so that I can help my students truly learn.I tutor subjects anywhere from Algebra I and II to Calculus III, and beyond (any undergraduate mathematics course (other than, perhaps, probability and statistics)). I also teach test preparation for various high school and undergraduate tests such as the ACT/SAT and GRE or GMAT. I love to teach these subjects, and I've been doing so for the three years I've been a tutor. I like to guide students in training them how to ask themselves questions, rather than me giving direct information to them. I feel that this is the best way to learn a subject. On the side, I like to teach guitar and drawing.

CDR - Commission on Dietetic Registration Tutor • +5 Subjects
In preparation for teaching, I have received my Bachelor's degree in Dietetics at Brigham Young University, and then continued my training to become a registered dietitian. This training has provided enlightening moments that affirmed my commitment to help others and specifically to help people develop a healthy understanding of the relationship between food and quality of life. For two years I worked with the Texas Cooperative Extension Service and SNAP-Ed program, giving me the opportunity to teach many families. As I tutor, my desire is to guide students through questions and discussions to assist them to seek for deeper knowledge and understanding; I am confident and comfortable tutoring for professional certifications including the CDR exams for DTRs and RDs. I also have a strong foundation in mathematics, and would love to tutor elementary and middle school math. When not tutoring, I also enjoy fantasy novels, the violin, racquetball, escape rooms and always cooking delicious, healthy meals.

Learning occurs when a student is in a safe, comfortable environment where they feel respected and engaged. As a teacher, I pride myself on ensuring that every student in my classroom feels like they have a voice, and that their voice is important. A student should never feel ashamed or afraid to express their opinion. When I teach, I start with a passionate approach to the material. I love Language Arts and strive to garner as much knowledge about the material as I can so that I can present true and credible information to my students. I then determine the most exciting way to convey the material so that each student is engaged. I learn as much as I can about the student's interests, passions, and hobbies, so that I can create analogies to their lives and impart the information in such a way that they can apply it to what they already know and care about. I believe that this method contributes to long term retention. My goal is, not only for my class to do well on standardized exams, but to carry a lifelong passion for learning and for the material that I've presented them. I feel an enormous sense of pride when I know that I've made a difference in a student's life. I want my students to see the importance of education and value in the betterment of themselves and their community.I believe that test scores don't tell the entire story of a student's progress, but an overview of the student as a whole is important to measure learning. How has the student progressed in the classroom? Have they shown a new interest in the subject? Have they volunteered more information about themselves over the course of a semester? Are they willing to participate in class discussion, whereas, before they were quiet? These are all questions I ask myself and measures I use to determine if I am teaching effectively. I believe in always working to become a better teacher and person. Therefore, I am always measuring my progress as well as the student's, and asking myself what I can do to become better at my job. One of the best ways for me to be a better teacher is to learn from my students.I embrace technology in my classroom and want the students to be excited about Language Arts as it applies to the world in which they operate. Social Media, blogging, and the internet in general are important spheres for education, and I like to make a connection to technology and the subject matter in which I'm teaching so that students are excited to see the application.
