Previously, I've participated in workshops with F&M alumni in education, interned with an arts-based preschool, and recently finished tutoring at my local school district, working with second graders and K-5 students; in the future, I will be serving as an ESL co-teacher overseas through the Fulbright Taiwan program. As the first in my family to make it past elementary school, I have always understood the power of knowledge and the opportunities it can afford you. I have done research about cosmic ray acceleration at supernova shock fronts in the Princeton University Department of Astrophysics, simulating how the turbulent plasmas push protons and ions. I have also worked at the Norfolk State University Department of Engineering, designing, simulating, optimizing, and building light filters for wavelength-division optical-electronic multiplexers. Another field I study is the mathematics of quasicrystals and aperiodic tilings, such as the Penrose tiling of rhombuses.Outside of school I play the trombone and piano, and enjoy hiking and bicycling. I teach first aid skills and lead camping trips for freshman orientation.Learning can be hard alone, but friends can make it easy.

I am a graduate of the prestigious Colorado School of Mines. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Computational and Applied Mathematics. I also have a Master's degree in Environmental Science and Engineering. As an environmental professional, I am passionate about educating people about the need to be good stewards of this beautiful planet. Most relevantly, I have been private tutoring for almost 6 years in primarily STEM subjects of geometry, algebra, trigonometry, calculus, chemistry, biology, physics, and statistics. I most enjoy tutoring any subject in mathematics because of the gratification you feel after solving a problem; how many of life's problems can be solved in such a short timeframe with full resolution like a 90's sitcom?!Throughout my concurrent teaching adventures, I also obtained a bachelors in ACS Biochemistry and another in Biomedical Sciences. I did very well in school, including college and graduate school, I wanted to help others learn how to study effectively and remember information. I have developed a desire to help people achieve their educational goals and succeed in an academic setting. I first began substitute teaching in the 1990s and felt like I was really making an impact on students' motivation to learn. I completed my student teaching in Spanish in 2003 at East Hartford High School (Connecticut). Soon thereafter, I began working for a private company as a tutor for students with special needs, as well as those with English as their second language (in reading, writing, and math).At this point, I also took on a few private tutoring jobs, with someone of Japanese descent, as well as a couple students who were of Mexican descent. I worked at an autism spectrum school for about four years as a direct care staff person. I taught Spanish to two adolescents while there. I also experienced growth myself, as I had not realized how important socialization is to learning. As you may or may not know, socialization is a big barrier to many students on the spectrum.Finally, I have been substitute teaching in the Albany, NY area, which renewed my interest in being an instructor/facilitator/guide to struggling students. During this time, I had also tutored an international graduate college student (from Saudi Arabia) in Educational Psychology in preparation for her Early Childhood degree. I felt like this experience opened my eyes even more about cultural differences, and was a challenge that I was prepared to meet.

I am in my fourth year as a math education and math double major at Winona State University in Winona, MN. I have worked for about four years as a University math tutor and have tutored classes ranging from college Algebra to introductory real analysis. I also have a lot of experience working with middle and high school age students through my field experiences. Why math is strongest subject, I tutor some statistics and computer science (Python is my favorite language) courses. Most importantly, I love learning and teaching others about math!My favorite subject to tutor is Calculus, in particular Calculus 1, because I love the depth of intuition one can achieve by thinking about topics visually.
