I received my Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from Virginia State University in 2012 and worked for a year as a chemist soon after. I always knew that I wanted to teach at some point and recently decided to pursue this career path as a 3rd grade math teacher. I had always been involved with tutoring and assisting people with educational endeavors. I come from a large family, so I initially gained experience with helping family and friends with homework, which led to tutoring while in college. My passion has always been helping and doing my best to positively influence the well being of others. Prior to graduation, I worked for the Students with Disabilities Program on campus providing note taking services. Before getting into my qualifications, though, I think it's important to note one thing about my teaching style. I was never someone who simply "got" things in class. I often struggled to understand relatively simple concepts, especially when compared to my classmates, whether that was in test-taking or in any academic subject. So, I know what it's like to really wrestle with a subject, and I know what kind of assistance is helpful (and what kind of assistance/teaching is not). I think this--empathizing with a student and knowing the difference between good and bad help--is the most important quality of a good tutor. And just as importantly, I will work hard to tailor each tutoring session to the student's needs.
