During that time I developed a tutoring style that is rooted in energetic working relationships and a thorough evaluation of student skills. I believe that tutoring is only effective when a student benefits from it long after our sessions are finished. For this reason, I stress that my students focus on and internalize the process and approaches that we review during our time together. My expertise lies primarily in teaching reading and writing. Some of the best moments of my teaching career thus far have been celebrating admissions to Stanford, Occidental, MIT, and Dartmouth with former pupils and guiding six juniors in high school to scores of 10 and above on the ACT writing section in 2014-2015. I find times like these to be extremely rewarding and expect to have more of them in the future.In my spare time I like to read (working on David Foster Wallace's "Infinite Jest" currently), follow the Cubs, Bears, Bulls, and Blackhawks, and learn about global politics.

I am a Northwestern University psychology grad with a master's degree in marketing communications from Illinois Institute of Technology. I taught ESL, TOEFL preparation, and pronunciation for many years and have tutored all ages and levels in reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, math, social studies, and ESL. I have also taught tutors how to teach literacy to adults. My teaching approach is to gently guide the student toward discovery and understanding of concepts through modeling, breaking down the process into steps, lots of practice -- and fun breaks when needed! I have found that taking a few minutes to tap into a different area of intelligence can be the perfect refresher that will allay frustration and power up learning.What interests you outside of academia? I am a second year student in the Clinical Psychology doctorate program at Midwestern University in Downers Grove. While my specialty is Psychology, my other passions are writing and reading. I studied Creative Writing at New York University in addition to Psychology (with a Child/Adolescent Mental Health Studies focus) and graduated Magna Cum Laude. In my free time I love going to live music in Chicago and playing mandolin. I think my studies have given me a unique perspective on what makes tutoring effective. In addition to teaching the academics of the subject, I find it important to identify the obstacles to learning the child may be experiencing (such as anxiety, testing environment, interpersonal difficulties, learning styles) and focus on enhancing the child's strengths to build self-efficacy. I am also experienced in teaching relaxation techniques to help a child cope with the stresses of their academics. I easily build rapport with children and understand the importance of good communication between the parents and teachers in order to optimize the tutoring experience.
