Hello! My name is Mya. I'm a current graduate student at the University of San Francisco, completing my Master's degree in Public Administration and Health Services. I'm a Bay Area native and enjoy meeting new people. I love traveling and learning about new cultures and helping others. I decided to join the Varsity Tutors team because I know how important learning is. I've struggled throughout my academics and always tried to reach out to my resources and wanted to give back by providing help to others.

I earned my Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Texas at Arlington and Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Texas at Tyler. While pursuing my undergraduate education, I became passionate about tutoring younger nursing students and carried my joy of knowledge sharing through being a preceptor in my career as a nurse. Since graduating, I was a cardiac RN for two years, where I encouraged others on my unit to form a study group to pursue a national certification with me. I then practiced as an ICU nurse for four years, during which I balanced working and school online to pursue my master's degree. Most recently, I have been loving my role as a Family Nurse Practitioner for the past two years. I tutor AANP, NCLEX and professional certification prep, as well as pharmacology and science. I truly believe education can be enjoyable and is often better retained when it's funny or quirky! Anyone can have education adapted to where they are, if they're willing to put in the work, and education is powerful.

Since graduation, I have worked in Early Childhood Learning Centers, Teaching Prek-1st grade and working online as an ESL tutor and student success coach. I am most passionate about teaching reading and phonics. I love helping students learn how to read and watch them grow into more fluent and confident readers. So as a result, I've picked up on different ways of studying that are appropriate for different levels, different settings, and different subjects.So whether a student is preparing for the ACT or the LSAT, is wanting to polish writing skills, or is wanting to strengthen a particular subject, I can do it.I graduated with honors with a degree in Economics from BYU, and graduated with high honors with my law degree from Case Western. I thus have a background in both math and in writing and reading. And I love being able to help other people learn in these areas.When I'm not working, I love cooking, exercising, or playing with my family.

I have two years of experience teaching middle school and high school English in France, as well as giving private English tutoring to young adults. When I was in college, I started tutoring as a part-time job.I taught for more than 8 years in my family-owned after-school tutoring center. I provided private lessons for many elementary, middle, and high school students in Math, biology, and chemistry and I assisted students ages 6 and with their homework and other class assignments.I also developed and managed intensive summer learning programs for officially awarded diplomas, one is equivalent to completing middle school called the Intermediate Certification or Lebanese Brevet and the other is equivalent to a GED called Lebanese General Secondary Certificate.I am trilingual in Arabic, French, and English. All the subjects I took throughout my academic life at school and university were taught in French. I am also fluent in Arabic because it is my native language.I love working with kids and I love creating new tools to help them excel in their academic journey.I became even more passionate about teaching after seeing how much positive impact I had on improving students' grades and academic knowledge.I am a firm proponent of education, believing it to be necessary for an improved quality of life, and I try to impart this appreciation to all of my students. This course enhanced my phonics training, comprehension teaching, and fluency assessment and English teaching skills.The experiences of working for CBS news in Tallahassee and traveling to 34 countries when working for Delta Airlines, made history alive for me, it highlighted the importance and value of language to connect people and it revealed the power of culture to inform one's identity.I believe everyone has a divine portion of talent and the ability to reach their full potential. I am an B1 speaker of Spanish and an A1 speaker of Chinese. I studied Spanish in Spain and Guatemala and have learned Chinese at home.
