I am a recent graduate from Washington State University Vancouver and received a Bachelor's of Science in Biology. I am pursuing a certification in Medical Laboratory Technology in the next few years. I can tutor all subjects, but I am skilled and passionate about math and science. I received high grades in all of my math and science courses in college and often helped my peers with homework and studying. I feel that I am a good teacher because I am patient and communicative, especially when working with children and young adults. I believe in using visuals and a calm composure to aid students in arriving at the right answer themselves, and feeling good about it. In my free time I enjoy dance, yoga, and cooking.

I have a BS in Geology from University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez and a MS in Geophysics from Brown University. Having grown up in Puerto Rico, I am fluent in both conversational and academic Spanish. Over the past five years, I have taught a variety of physical science courses at the collegiate level to both pre-college, college, and advanced high school students from which I have cultivated a strong student-centered teaching philosophy based on responding to the needs of my students. While I tutor a variety of subjects, my favorite is Geology because it allows me to always be connected to what happens around me. In my spare time, I enjoy sewing, reading, running, swimming, and hiking. I love traveling the world any time I have the chance.

I am a graduate student at Portland State University, where I also work as a tutor in the Writing Center. My tutoring experience, however, goes beyond that. I worked as a peer writing tutor at Bennington College, where I completed my undergraduate degree. My experience, though, is not limited to working with college students. Indeed, I have spent more time working with high school and middle school students, spending 3 years tutoring Math and English at a charter school in Providence, R.I., and a year working with 6th graders.Having worked across different age groups, I recognize that there is no one correct method of tutoring. Indeed, it is to my advantage to work across the age groups, because it has allowed me to develop my style of tutoring, which is entirely student driven.By that, I mean I go into a tutoring session ready to respond to what the student needs. As a tutor, I am not the primary educator, but rather someone who offers what a student might not necessarily have at school: personalized, one-on-one support and assistance, designed to meet the needs of the student, and tailored around how best the student learns and engages with their subjects.Because of that, I find working with students to be very rewarding. Each student is different, and making it possible to better myself as an educator, and allowing me to better help my students.

Nothing is more gratifying for me than helping others achieve knowledge and happiness. That???s why I???m here at Varsity Tutors, so I can help others reach academic excellence, and beyond. Before I became a tutor, I was a Lead Teaching Assistant for human anatomy and physiology at my university for two years, became a Division I track and field All-American honorable mention and Academic All-American, did synthetic organic chemistry research, and graduated summa cum laude. Now that I???ve graduated, I???m applying and interviewing for medical school, volunteering in the rural, underserved community as an EMT on an ambulance, and helping young children with special needs in an impoverished city.A lot of people ask me why I chose medicine. One reason why I???m pursuing medicine is because I???m passionate about teaching others, and that???s why I???m here, because I truly enjoy it. I enjoy helping others in MCAT prep, biochemistry, and much more. I hope to not just be a tutor, but a helpful guide and mentor in your academic endeavors.

I graduated from Princeton University in 2016. I studied architecture, and I intend to pursue a master's degree, but for the time being, I want to work and enjoy going new places. I just moved to Portland, OR from Washington D.C., and I am excited to see what the West Coast has to offer. I love learning and teaching, and I am excited to share what I know of standardized tests, the English language, and of writing overall.I tutored for two programs while at Princeton; one was the Petey Greene Prisoner Assistance Program, which provided one-on-one tutoring with inmates in the correctional education system. I also tutored for Let's Get Ready, which was a free SAT prep program. From these experiences I gained a broad knowledge of how best to tutor people of different ages and backgrounds.I recently took the GRE test and I performed well on the SAT back in high school. I have a strong grasp of the tests and I would say that tutoring the writing/verbal portions of these tests is my strongest suit. I also love reading and writing, and I love to share my knowledge of the English language by helping others to write the best possible papers and essays.

I recently graduated from Lewis and Clark College in Portland, OR with a degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. During my studies, I also completed my pre-medical requirements and am currently applying to medical school. I have had the chance to interact and help students as a teaching assistant in a general biology course lab and my education helped me develop learning techniques and time management skills that I look forward to bringing to you. Not all information can be approached in the same manner and I hope to help students find new ways of learning as well as identify what works best for them. Certain subjects can be extremely daunting and I will work to help you tackle those areas with confidence!

I'm a Portland State University graduate, having received a Bachelor or Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing. I've come to a point in my life where I feel extremely fortunate to have received the education I have, and I'm eager to begin the process of giving back some of the valuable lessons I've learned. Whether through my time as a teaching assistant in Elementary School classrooms, or volunteering at Casa de Los Angeles, a daycare in San Miguel de Allende, I've always made sure that teaching and working with others has played a part in my life. I'm interested in approaching tutoring as something that resembles a process of mutual learning more than it does a teacher-student dynamic. I believe that there is always something to learn from working with another individual, and it's in these one-on-one collaborations that I've found the most fulfillment over the years.Outside of my academic life, I write, exercise and play music every chance I get. I've always been a fiction writer, and was fortunate enough to follow this passion at my university. Throughout my education, it's been the classes that stimulate my interest and capture my imagination that I find myself learning the most from, but even when I've taken subjects I didn't think I'd connect with, there have been teachers whose passion for the material helped me find my own. When tutoring reading and writing, it's my goal to let my enthusiasm for the subjects come through, and hopefully inspire some of that same spirit in others.

I am a math teacher at King's Way High School in Vancouver, WA. In 2016, I earned my B.A. in Mathematics and Russian from Portland State University (PSU). In 2017, I got my Masters in Education, also from PSU. This 2017-2018 school year will be my first year of teaching, and I am very excited to begin my career as an educator. I came into this field because I believe that my strength is my ability to present and explain math in a way that's easy to grasp and appreciate. Anybody can copy and paste the formulas onto the blackboard or screen, but not everybody can take a seemingly complicated subject and break it down into simple, understandable terms. In my practice, I want to make it my mission to make math interesting and engaging for all students. In my previous experiences working as a tutor, I've realized that I'm not only teaching; I'm also continually learning. I look forward to learning with and from my students by applying the knowledge and skills I learn to make an impact in all areas of their lives.
