I will be graduating from the University of California, San Diego this June (2014). I will be receiving my Bachelor of Arts with Latin and Departmental Honors in Literature and Writing, with focuses in education, French Literature, Literatures of the World in English, and fiction writing. I have four years of tutoring and teaching experience at UC San Diego's Office of Academic Support and Instructional Services (OASIS), both in teaching undergraduate writing workshops and working with both undergraduates and high school students in one-on-one tutoring. I have also worked extensively with ESL students and students from inner-city high schools. I tutor a broad range of subjects, including argumentative and research writing, composition, reading comprehension, beginning French, stylistics and grammar, and literature. I especially love tutoring in argumentative writing and reading comprehension, which is why I enjoy working with students on SAT Critical Reading and Writing and GRE Verbal and Writing. Watching students develop critical skills and confidence in these subjects is the best part of my job!In my years working as a teacher and tutor, I've noticed that a student's confidence in a subject is often his or her main gateway to success. As a result, I work hard to both develop that confidence and the skills required to perform well both in class and on standardized tests. I also have a dynamic teaching and tutoring style that keeps students engaged and understanding the material. I understand that for most students, school is sometimes boring; luckily, I've been trained in how to keep them interested through both connecting to my students and involving them in their learning process. I do this by structuring my lessons around discussions that do not rely only on me just giving them information (unless it is necessary), but instead help them practice the critical thinking that leads them to coming up with solutions themselves. This has proven to be more effective than the "lecture" or "knowledge dump" methods, since students can then use their learning in other subjects and essay prompts. I guide my students in how to think; I don't tell them what to think.Outside of my academic work and interests, I love running (I've run track for eight years), hiking San Diego's beautiful trails, and painting.

I'm an undergraduate Bioengineering student at the University of California, San Diego. I love science and math and, luckily, Bioengineering allows me to study everything from Cell Biology to Mechanics to Differential Equations. I regularly taught classical dance to a class of 15 young girls when I was in high school; breaking down dance steps for them really taught me how to deconstruct and convey ideas. I'm patient and logical and love to work with kids. Besides taking classes, I volunteer in a research lab and dance on a nationally competitive team.

As a former full time English teacher and a current part time yoga teacher, I guess you could say teaching has always been a calling for me. I truly enjoy guiding, supporting, and helping to move people forward toward their goals; this type of work is infinitely rewarding. In addition to reading! and yoga! I also enjoy cooking (and eating!), spending time outdoors, traveling, and simply relaxing with family and friends.I look forward to helping you reach your goals in writing, reading, literature, school, and life!

I graduated from UC San Diego with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physiology and Neuroscience and minors in Psychology and Hebrew Language and Literature. Throughout my time in college, I continued to work on study methods to help me maintain a high level of understanding of topics while enjoying the process of learning as well. Being able to figure out what study methods worked best for me (regardless of the subject I was studying) is the reason that I believe I was successful in my undergraduate studies and is crucial in any kind of learning in my opinion.I strongly feel that focusing on what a person enjoys and using their strengths toward their advantage is the only way to help someone truly learn well and recall information correctly. This is the type of strategy that I would like to employ when I tutor your child. Because everyone learns differently, I will need to speak to the parents before the first tutoring session. The first thing I'd like to do is get to know your child by speaking to you. I would like to understand what your child enjoys to do (hobbies, sports, etc.) and what you feel is the best way your child learns. After I have a better understanding of who your child is, I will attempt to incorporate the things that your child enjoys to make the tutoring session much more fun and exciting. Whether it's through visuals, references or mnemonics, I will try to discover what works best and will continue using this method to teach your child the subjects that your child struggles with. My hope is that your child will continue to use and develop these methods of learning that they enjoy on their own as well so that one day they too can apply it to any future subject that they might struggle with.In my spare time, I enjoy sports (especially basketball), Krav Maga, the beach, traveling and meeting new people. I look forward to speaking to you and helping your child succeed in school and to help create a better path for your child to learn.

The most important thing I've learned from my experience with tutoring and teaching is that energy, ability to connect, and character make a fantastic teacher. During my time in the corporate world, I realized that I had a genuine interest in helping everyone succeed. After some time volunteering with students, I realized that my passion was for helping students succeed. Not necessarily just earning the grades, but developing confidence and motivation to help them through their remaining academic career. After a career transition from engineering to teaching, I have felt more fulfilled than ever before. Using my real world experiences to help students make the "why do I need to learn this" connection is one of my strengths. Seeing the look on a student's face when they have that break through moment is one of the most rewarding experiences I have had in my time with teaching. The best compliment I've received from my students is that I actually take the time to find where the disconnect is and then develop that connection from an established starting point.

I am a Stanford student who loves both learning and teaching. I have taught English at an elementary school in China and have provided writing and SAT tutoring over Skype for a non-profit. I have also volunteered extensively at a local non-profit that promotes literacy at schools in at-risk areas and have also read aloud to young students. Because of these experiences, I am a strong believer in the importance of education in changing lives and reshaping communities.I have loved to read and write from a young age and have enjoyed publishing pieces from research papers to poetry. I tutor students in Math, Social Science and English because these are the areas I am most passionate about.I love seeing my students discover, grow, and succeed. In my tutoring, I strive to get to know each student's individual learning style and then to adapt my lesson plans to the student's needs. I am determined to help each student unlock their potential and find their love of learning through a positive learning environment that is challenging but also supportive. I have also had a lot of experience with the SAT's, AP exams, and the college process, and I look forward to sharing my tips and strategies with my students. In my free time, I love to run, play tennis, read, write, and explore San Diego with my dogs. I can't wait to meet you!

I am a certified teacher and have years of experience working in schools alongside students. I love teaching because it challenges me in ways that I never thought possible. I also love when I help a student achieve something he or she thought was beyond their capability. I will never get tired of witnessing those "a-ha!" moments in my students. Helping a student understand a concept or simply soliciting a smile out of him or her is sometimes all the encouragement a teacher needs.I pride myself on having a positive attitude and confront most situations with a smile. I firmly believe that when you change your mindset you can change the world. I can easily adapt to varying situations and have done so many times in my life. For example, my sense of adventure led me to travel for almost a year after college. I worked alongside families in Italy on their farms and lived out of a backpack. I was in a foreign country living with total strangers who did not always speak my language. I learned to be flexible and to enjoy the unknown. My experience working with students is vast. In the realm of teaching, I completed internships in a variety of schools and subject areas. I worked for a year with severely autistic students and enjoyed being part of a team of people committed to helping this special population. I was a Social Studies teacher for two years and now I currently work in the special education department at a middle school. I also have experience tutoring elementary aged students. In college I volunteered fifteen hours a week as a youth ministry leader. I counseled girls through life's trials and built strong relationships with them. Through that same youth ministry program, I had the opportunity to work most summers at adventure camps. I led teenagers through ropes courses and on mountain biking excursions. It thrilled me to help girls overcome obstacles and confront fears. My time as an assistant basketball coach also satisfied my passion for working with adolescents. I coached a very diverse group of girls and took great pride in watching them overcome their differences and truly bond as a team. There is always something new to learn while working with youth and I am always willing to change or adapt to make things more successful. I hope to create this same attitude in those I tutor. I hope that they leave our session always wanting to learn more after I have helped them work through their academic struggles using my vast knowledge of teaching best practices. In my personal life I like to stay very active and feel the most alive when I get to enjoy the outdoors. I enjoy cooking and gardening and know that by maintaining a healthy lifestyle of eating well and exercising regularly I can be a better role model and tutor.

After graduating from Westivew High School, I attended UC Davis for a year, studying mechanical engineering. I am currently at a junior college with the intention of transferring to a different 4 year university. I have been tutoring math, science, and test preparation for 4 years for students of all ages. I am strongest in high level math, which is my favorite subject to tutor as well.My teaching style involves guiding the student through exercises instead of just showing them how to complete them. This way, they are more engaged in the tutoring session and are able to get more out of it.Outside of school and tutoring I enjoy playing soccer, going to the beach, and mountain biking.

I graduated from Suncoast High School in Riviera Beach, FL, with an IB Diploma. I completed a dual-degree program at the University of Florida in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation as well as Zoology, with a minor in Chemistry. In college, I worked for a radioactive chemistry lab, working with isotopes in analyzing chemical levels in crop plants as well as research in fire ecology and native bird survivability. Briefly after college I worked for a state crime lab analyzing samples from performance animals, looking for illicit drugs using thin-layer chromatography. I left Florida to start a Masters Degree program at the University of Georgia, working with molecular biology techniques to attempt to identify the gene of interest in a cerebellar abiotrophy in pure-bred dogs. While I did that, I completed training as an Emergency Medical Technician and took coursework in Wilderness Search and Rescue at the University of West Georgia. I started a dual degree in veterinary medicine and graduate school, earning a DVM/PhD. My doctoral work was with viral diseases in white-tailed deer. I have spent the last two years in a residency program with the veterinary medical teaching hospital at UC-Davis, and I am now completing my final year of training here in San Diego studying conservation medicine.I have tutored students at all levels, from middle school to graduate school, and I have formally lectured undergraduates, graduate students, veterinary students, and technical college students. I love learning and am an enthusiastic teacher. My teaching philosophy, in a nutshell, centers on involving the student learner. How do they think? What interests them? Engaging students and working to avoid frustrating them is vital to effective teaching. It can be very challenging in a classroom setting, but in tutoring, it is usually a thoroughly adaptable method and enjoyable all around!
