I work with students on written response and other forms of communication.I believe the power to unite people through ideas belies the surface of every piece of language; it teems at the margins, billows at the rim of critical response, and dares to implode if not for the courage of the writer to engage in heated dialogue with text and audience. To achieve such a thing, and effectively, means not only to chisel the skill for syntax, grammar, research and format; it also means realizing a passion to change the reader???s mind, spark a fire in one???s audience face-to-face, and conjure the kind of ripple effect that leaves the world forever moved. My aim as a tutor is 2-fold:1. to sharpen students??? writing and oratory skills, and2. to inspire and affirm self-belief???the notion that the student and her, or his, ideas are worthy and worth sharing.EXPERIENCEIn 2011 and 2012, I taught two undergraduate-level lectures at the University of Maryland College Park: How Colonialism Caused Gender Stratification in the U.S., and The Harlem Renaissance: A Sanitization and Regression of Black Art.In Fall 2012, I lived in Hamburg, Germany for three months as a DO School Music Challenge Fellow, where I facilitated a multi-lingual and multi-ethnic class of young adults in choral and dance performance.Upon returning to the States, I worked in the private sector as a marketing copy and web specialist, and in 2014, created and facilitated a mindfulness and meditation workshop as part of The Rise of The Artrepreneur Presents: Unleash the Beast. an original 3-part art series about becoming who you are. The series will continue with its 3rd edition later this summer.Since 2015, I???ve toured Philadelphia and Chester Counties??? charter schools, serving as a guest teacher and mentor to students ages 11-17.EDUCATION2008-2012: University of Maryland College Park | Bachelor???s Degree in Liberal Arts | Major: CommunicationMinor: English, one semester. Concentrated studies: African American Studies, Gender Studies, and Public Relations.2012-2013: The DO School | Certificate in Music and Social EntrepreneurshipTUTORING SUBJECTS: Reading, Writing, Essay Editing, Literature, Grammar and Mechanics, Public Speaking, English, Math, Elementary Math.

I attended the University of Maryland in College Park, where I earned my degree in Economics. In addition to the Economics coursework, I also took many Science and Math classes in consideration for a career in Medicine. To further my education, I have recently applied to Dental schools as well as a Master's program. I have always enjoyed working with kids as well as teaching/coaching, so tutoring offers the perfect opportunity to do something I really enjoy. As a student, my favorite subjects were Math, Science, and Art. Of the three subjects, Math is my strongest and also my favorite subject to teach, followed by Sciences (especially Chemistry). Working with kids and teens has taught me the importance of patience and finding ways to keep the material interesting. I have found that the best way to learn is rarely by listening to someone, but instead by doing and having a conversation throughout the learning process. In my spare time, I love to play and watch rugby, basketball, football and other sports. I also like to paint, but given the choice, I would prefer to be outdoors doing something active like hiking, rock climbing, or camping.

I became interested in helping students learn math as a "personal tutor" for my oldest son. He always struggled in math and when he entered algebra in high school, he did not understand the teacher and required a lot of help. Being the math nerd that I am, I excitedly sat down with him to help him master algebra. He thinks I am crazy for loving it and I don't think he will ever embrace my love of numbers, but at least he understands it now.

French/Greek/American marine biologist turned teacher! I have spent many years studying fish eggs and larvae (babies! So cute!) at an environmental consulting firm. However, as much as science gets me really excited, I really missed teaching! I changed careers and have now been teaching. After a year and a half abroad in Japan teaching French and English, I am now focusing on my masters in middle school science education. As a native French and English speaker, I have done a lot of tutoring in both of those subjects. As a science nerd, I am very excited to show students how nifty the natural world around us is. I would be more than happy to help you with biology, ecology, and environmental science!

I have a Bachelor's degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology where I studied Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Energy Systems. In addition to several internships working on wind and steam turbines, I spent nearly two years as a researcher working to eliminate idling on public school buses. In high school, I converted my 1984 diesel to run on waste vegetable oil. I try to bring a level of enthusiasm towards tutoring math that is normally reserved for every other subject besides math. I do not believe that anyone is naturally good or bad at math, but some people have better luck with finding teachers that connect with them in a meaningful way. I find it important to teach material in a way that a student is most comfortable learning it. My hobbies include working on my car, hiking, and reading (or napping) in my hammock.

After living in Germany for 15 years, my family moved to the United States in 2003. I went to Lower Merion High School for three years and then attended Temple University where I got my BA in History and German. I also completed coursework for a Minor in Mathematics. In 2011, I moved to Washington D.C. to get my MA in European History at American University.Throughout my undergraduate and graduate studies, I have tutored German and Mathematics, and I am eager to continue my work at Varsity Tutors. My goal is to become a teacher, either at the High School or College level.I believe that education and the process of educating are two-way streets, during which both parties learn and evolve constantly. Success, especially in tutoring, comes from building strong, personal relationships with each student, getting to know one's student, and letting the student know the tutor, also builds trust, which is essential for a healthy learning environment.I am eager to work with any student, and I am confident that through hard work and dedication anyone can succeed in any subject or topic.I look forward to working with you, be it in Mathematics, German, or History!!
