I am excited to offer my background in a varied educational experience to students! I am barred in three states and a practicing attorney. I have a B.A. in English with Honors from the University of Texas and a J.D. from Lewis & Clark Law School. I loved school and continue to broaden my interests through classes and new experiences even with my professional position. I benefited from tutoring in various subjects including test prep, that was critical to my success. I also think editing is a crucial component to bettering one's writing skills and one-on-one feedback can greatly help.

I'm a working Musical Theatre actor who has a passion for teaching and tutoring, especially in English and standardize tests. As a child, I was horrible at focusing in the standardize tests, and missed an entire section because I was "bored". As I grew up, I learned how to focus and became quite good at understanding the methods of creating the questions and understanding what they were testing. I became interested in grammar and literature particularly, because it is fascinating to get into. So many different words to describe life, and so many stories to delve into! When I was a teenager, a good number of my poems, stories and essays were published professionally. I was also one of the five finalists of the Profile in Courage essay competition for the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library in 2009.While theatre is my dream and career, I decided to become a tutor so I could help others who needed assistance with something that was just fun for me. Practicing for my own PSATs and SATs, watching my scores (practice and real) go up and up gave me a satisfaction that its almost indescribable. Helping people reach their own goals, and seeing them succeed is really important for me.My approach is more relaxed, because learning should always be fun. I believe in practice making close to perfect, and repetition is key. The easiest way to remember something is writing it down a time or two. It works with all subjects, and it forces your attention to be on what you're doing in the moment.I got into some of the top schools in the country, but ultimately decided on Catholic University of America because it had the best Musical Theatre program, which was the most important part of choosing a college in my view. With a degree in theatre, Shakespeare and other such play analysis is just about second nature to me. When I was in High School, I was in Honors and Advanced English throughout my time (AP Language and Literature), and got 5's on both exams. Also, when I took the SAT (back when the writing portion was required), I never got less than a perfect score on my essay. Once I got to college, I decided to be a peer advisor/editor for papers to earn a little money while in school. Once my school work got too crazy, I stopped, but I helped a lot of papers turn from Cs and Ds in the rough draft portion to As and Bs.

It is my pleasure to see students confidence grow and enjoy the learning process, not just race to the end result. Having worked with varying ages and levels of learning has given me the patience and excellent interpersonal and communication skills it takes to help students to achieve their goals.I have a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in International Relations, with a Minor in Spanish. I enjoy travelling, meeting and getting to know people from different countries and cultures, reading, sports (especially football/soccer and tennis) and outdoor activities.I hope to use my international experience, love of learning and teaching to broaden my students' horizons and help them to realize their potential.

ACT Prep Tutor • +49 Subjects

I am a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin where I received my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Plan II Honors along with a minor in Biology. During my years as an undergrad, I served as a peer adviser to help incoming freshmen prepare for college-level classes; an editor for both my university's literary journal and research journal; and a Mandarin Chinese teacher for beginning learners. After graduation, I began tutoring ESL students from China and eventually succeeded in raising their English scores by a full letter grade at the end of the semester. With more than 5 years of mentoring, tutoring, and teaching experience, I strongly believe that all subjects can be made fascinating. Gaining knowledge should be an exciting process, not a dreaded routine. Because of this, I try my best to find creative and fun methods of teaching for all my subjects, particularly for my specialtiesreading, writing, and test preparation. Due to my love of both learning and helping others, I am currently beginning a graduate degree in social work that will allow me to both expand my education and aid a greater amount of people. In my spare time, I enjoy reading and writing; playing the piano, violin, and ukulele; pet-sitting kittens or puppies; and trying adventurous foods.

1st Grade ELA (in Spanish) Tutor • +35 Subjects

I have 17 years teaching experience as an elementary ESL and middle school Spanish teacher in Minnesota with students from about 20 different countries and many language backgrounds. In 2019 I was nominated for Minnesota Teacher of the Year. It makes my day to see students proud of reaching each goal they set out to conquer! I've worked with students on English listening, speaking, reading, vocabulary and phonics goals, as well as language-related content goals (science, math, social studies, etc) in order to improve test-taking skills. While learning, we try to keep things fun with TPR movements, music, mnemonics, game-style learning activities, etc., as it helps our brain remember when we feel at ease. However, I also keep high expectations so students grow as much as possible. That's why my students feel proud of their accomplishments - they worked hard and earned it!
