I have been teaching junior high and high school English for ten years. I am also an AP English Literature and Composition teacher and a certified ESL instructor.

I am a graduate of The College of William and Mary. I received my Bachelor of Arts in English, with a concentration in film studies and a minor in anthropology. My passion for literature brought me to New York--specifically to the New York publishing world, where I worked as an assistant to a literary agent for two years. It's probably become clear at this point that the subject I am most passionate about is writing. In college, I worked as a consultant at my school's Writing Resources Center, assisting students with their academic papers. In this position, I helped our clients improve the overall structure of their papers, strengthen their research, cite their sources, and correct their spelling and mechanics. I feel confident that I can address any paper problems you might have and make the writing process less intimidating.Aside from academic papers, I also write comedy sketches and spend most of my free time improvising and creating webseries with friends. Performing as a comedian may not seem connected to my educational philosophy, but I think many of the skills you learn as an improviser translate well to test taking. Staying calm under pressure and adjusting your strategy to meet new challenges are important whether you're onstage or in SAT prep mode!

I received my BA in anthropology with minors in history and classics at Hunter College in New York City in 2007. A few years later, I attended LaGuardia Community College and became a licensed veterinary technician, which means I am an animal nurse!My academic interests mostly relate to animals: zoology, evolutionary ecology, paleozoology, social evolution, and phylogenetics. I also love studying history, and will always assert that nothing happens in a historical vacuum.In my free time I do a lot of reading and a lot of writing, on topics ranging from politics to science to kids' cartoons.

I recently graduated summa cum laude from Augsburg College with a bachelors degree in Sociology and a minor concentration in Spanish. Now I am happily employed at Carleton College in Northfield as an evening supervisor in the library I love it! My plan is to eventually go on to get my Ph.D. in Sociology.Helping others learn brings me great joy, and Ive had the privilege of teaching people from a variety of ages and backgrounds. I was a supplemental instructor for the Statistical Analysis course at Augsburg College and also served as a tutor through the Academic Skills Office there. I have tutored high schoolers at the MN Internship Center and worked with students of all ages from elementary schoolers to adults at the non-profit program Safe Place: Homework Help. A particular highlight of mine is the summer I spent teaching English to adults as a certified ESL assistant at the International Education Center in downtown Minneapolis.All these experiences have helped me develop a variety of strategies to adapt to different learners needs and learning styles. I tutor a wide range of subjects, such as ACT prep, math, writing, Spanish, and Latin. I'm an undergraduate at Columbia University in New York City, and from this you might think that Varsity has put my profile in the wrong city. They most certainly have not: I am a Houstonian, born and raised, and I'm back in my hometown for the summer. Last year in New York, I worked with Elementary schoolers, helping with preparation for New York State Math and English exams. This summer, I'm looking forward to helping with test-prep for all ages. With the help of some excellent teachers, I myself scored a perfect 2400 on the SAT, helping me get into Columbia, one of the most prestigious universities in the country. Since then, I've wanted to join that elite corps, to help other students conquer standardized testing, complete the college application process, and go further on the road to achieving their dreams. At Columbia, I study Computer Science, but I also have a great passion for the sciences, math, and literature. I enjoy Chemistry and Physics, am very comfortable in math from Pre-Algebra all the way through Calculus I, and have gathered some great insight about the sort of writing that is expected from America's top universities. I love learning of all sorts, and hope to be able to share some of that passion this summer! When I'm not preparing for classes, I enjoy reading the classics, learning new programming languages, and exploring the two wonderful cities I'm so privileged to split my time between.

In addition to receiving a B.A. in English from the University at Buffalo, I am a graduate of Deep Springs College: an elite liberal arts program located in Eastern California. Unlike most schools, the admission process to Deep Springs involves writing - and later defending before a panel of staff, faculty and students - seven essays on a variety of subjects including literature, philosophy, and education. Once admitted to Deep Springs, students are typically required to read upwards of 100 pages per day from authors such as Hegel, Joyce, and Thucydides; and to write several essays per week, which are peer-critiqued in seminar classes. I plan to bring my depth of experience in reading, critical analysis, and writing to each tutoring session in order to help students achieve their goals in these areas.

I love the look a child gets in their eyes when they begin to understand a concept that has alluded them in the past. Whether teaching my class or working one on one with a student, seeing that success is what I strive for.

I love engineering, working with hands on activities, designing physical systems, and thinking up new inventions.In my free time I play just about every sport here on campus in the intramural leagues. I also fly RC drones and love to be outside as much as possible.I'm best at math and physics. I'm good at thinking up many different ways to explain a new concept and put ideas from paper into real world examples.

One of my tasks was coordinating and organizing two tutoring programs.I enjoy writing and supporting students in their own writing, whether it is a creative writing assignment for school or a college application essay. I have published short articles, poetry and a book chapter. I also have proofreading and editing experience.Additionally I am excited to support students in reading comprehension. Reading was something I became excited about early on in life and I love to support students in increasing their comprehension and enjoyment.
