I try to take history from boring facts to interesting connections that tell a story and explain why events come about.I also try to focus on helping students learn to express their ideas through writing, both in formal essays and in class assignments. I am a doctoral student in theater history at Yale University currently living in Boston. I also hold a B.A. with honors in English Literature. I offer tutoring in elementary and middle school math, English literature, and reading comprehension; I can also offer particular expertise in writing.I am a published critic and scholar, and I currently work as an editorial assistant and proofreader. I also love teaching writing. I have worked for three years in writing intensive courses at the undergraduate and graduate level, and have also helped lead writing workshops for middle and high school students. I enjoy working with students from a wide variety of age levels and educational backgrounds.While the rules governing grammar, usage, and essay construction may appear challenging for many, I believe that, with effort and guidance, anyone can learn to write well. While pursuing my undergraduate degree, I tried to diversify my courses as much as I could within the limits of my program. This allowed me to gain a broader educational experience even though my main field is the Sciences. If I had to pick my favorite subjects, they would be Biology and English because I have always excelled in them with very little effort throughout my educational career.The pursuit of knowledge is one of my passions and I really enjoy applying the things I learn towards helping others become better students. My varied background gives me the ability to explain difficult concepts in many different ways so that my students can more readily grasp them. Repetition is necessary for learning to take place. Learning is fun, no other worldly activity gives the same sense of progression and advancement and this is the notion that I try to bring across to my students.When not learning or tutoring, I write poetry and articles and edit my recently completed first book. I also enjoy a wide variety of music and try to travel as much as I possible. I have 10+ years of experience working with students as a teacher, tutor, and mentor. I returned to the US this past summer after working as an ESL Teaching Assistant for the last 3 years in Madrid, Spain. During my time in Spain, I worked on my own mastery of the Spanish language while teaching students ranging from preschool age to adults. I taught English in primary and secondary schools and also provided one to one in-home tutoring. I love teaching language because it gives the leaner many opportunities to connect with people all over the world on a different level. I feel that the discipline and dedication put forth to learn a new language shows a great deal of respect for the native speakers and their culture.
