Elementary School Math Tutor • +9 Subjects
I am an undergraduate and graduate degree holder who has a deep passion for teaching, encouraging, mentoring and motivating youth. I spent a few years working with children between the ages of 5 and 14 years old at local elementary and middle schools in the Las Vegas Metropolitan area. I learned how to deliver lessons and create activities that allowed me to gain experience in lesson planning, writing, and delivering. This experience highlighted the importance of using positive reinforcement as well as different teaching styles to engage all students, whether individually or collectively.I am a huge proponent of engaged learning. I believe that engaged learning helps the child to be able to grasp the concept of any subject. It allows the child to explore the subject, retain information, and shows the teacher their learning style. Each child is different and each child has their own learning style. I am able and willing to teach to each child in the manner in which they learn the best.

Academic Coaching Tutor • +64 Subjects
Hi! My name is Julie. I love teaching; my primary experience is with high school and adult learners, though I have also taught middle school and have experience working with younger children. I have been an instructional coach in the areas of middle and high school ELA, history, and science, and I was an elementary literacy specialist two years running for a summer teacher training program at a large elementary school. I have also been a high school principal, and most recently, my full-time job has been to coach high school principals around the country. My diverse experiences have given me insight into a wide range of content areas and age groups, from kids to adult learners. I am an avid test-taker and find test prep to be fascinating and - yes - fun! I've taken the LSAT and GRE; my scores were good enough to get into some pretty great schools, along with some scholarship money. I believe everyone is capable of achieving their academic goals! In my free time, I love to rock climb, and I sing with a choir. I'm also a big travel buff.

10th Grade Math Tutor • +87 Subjects
I have always loved mathematics. Someday I will obtain my PhD in that subject. My school background is rough since I was born with a hearing disability. I was not the best academically, but I was involved in soccer. This hardship increased due to procrastination. Procrastination is a nasty habit that haunts everyone. That is more reason why I should tutor others. I have a deeper understanding why students struggle in their subjects. I know where the roadblocks are and how to overcome them. I no longer have trouble hearing ever since I undergone ear surgery and changed my life dramatically. I still feel like I am playing catch up, but that seems not to be the case in all areas. Everyone is playing catch up in at least one area of study.

I received my Bachelor of Arts in International Studies, with a focus on the Francophonie from Bryn Mawr College in 2017. I have worked as an English as a Second Language teaching assistant for adult immigrants to the US, conducted journalism workshops with elementary students, and run a summer enrichment program for Togolese youth overseas. For the 2017-2018 school year, I worked as an English teaching assistant for French middle and high-school students in Romans-sur-Isere, France. I am passionate about helping students in English, Literature, and French. The daughter of an educator and a former home-schooler myself, I am willing to think outside the box to help my students learn. I live for those aha! moments when a student grasps a new concept and I try to empower my students to be lifelong learners.

I studied at Lewis & Clark College, where I graduated cum laude in Math and Physics. Since then, I've worn many hats, including math tutor, cook and farmer. Most recently, I worked at a summer camp and retreat center in Southern California, developing experiential nature programming for campers aged 7-17. I've spent over four years tutoring a range of high school and college-level math, and I believe tutoring is a balance between clarifying concepts and building strong, trusting relationships with students. After all, every education should be inspiring and enjoyable! When not tutoring, you can find me cooking, playing the drums, or weaving on my new loom.

I am currently working on my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education at the University of Missouri in St. Louis. Teaching is my passion, and I am never happier than when I am helping students make sense of new information. Although I am getting my certification to work with children grades K-6, I love working with students of all ages.I have worked for an educational camp called College for Kids for seven years as an assistant and as an instructor. I have also volunteered as a literacy advocate for Ready Readers and as a tutor for Girls Inc. In my free time, I like to read books, bake, and train for races; I recently completed my first half marathon! My approach to tutoring is recognizing that everyone has a different learning style. Experimenting with different approaches to learning, whether that be visual, auditory, or tactile- kinesthetic, enables the student to not only grasp the material, but also retain it. All it takes is exploring what works best for each individual.

AP Chinese Language and Culture Tutor • +10 Subjects
With years of online and in classroom teaching experiences in the United States, Europe, and China, as well as doctoral training in the specialty of Chinese language and literature, I am confident in my ability to become the right Chinese tutor you are looking for.I started working as a Chinese instructor in the United States in 2008. I had the wonderful opportunity to instruct both secondary and college-level students. The diversity of students made me developed highly effective teaching techniques and instructional methods, which allowed me to educate all levels of learners. After 2010, I worked as a Chinese lecturer in a University in Europe. With more strict and systematic teaching training there, I turned into a more professional teacher in all aspects of Chinese instruction. After years of teaching, I resumed my academic pursuit and obtained my doctoral degree in Chinese Modern Literature and Culture in December 2014.As a Chinese instructor, I aim to develop my students' understanding of Chinese language and culture, helping them view China as a understandable country. Students came to my class with all kinds of inquiries about China at the beginning, but after several courses, they said that they could better understand Chinese people and China, and I count that as a big success. For me, culture and language learning are tightly connected. In my courses, I always try to explain the new words and sentences in a cultural background, for example, when we were learning the character for "study," I tried to depict an vivid picture for them. I told my students, the strokes on the top of this character stands for the adults holding woods with their bare hands trying to build a safe house for their kids, thus the kids could go to this safe place to learn new knowledge, and this is why you can see a "kid" at the bottom of the character. From my explanation, the students could not only remember this character, but also figured out the original educational philosophy of China. Furthermore, students could make comparison between Chinese teaching philosophy and American teaching philosophy, and this made them understand China more profoundly.I have taught many courses including AP Chinese, Chinese in speech and writing (elementary, intermediate, and advanced), oral Chinese proficiency (level 1 and 2), Chinese characters (level 1 and 2), and business Chinese. I also developed courses like Chinese modern literature and Chinese film studies. There is no doubt to me that my background will make great contributions to your Chinese learning.
