Education is my passion. I studied International Relations as an undergrad at Connecticut College, and I am currently working towards a Master of Arts in Teaching to be a high school social studies teacher. I tutored peers in college in subjects like US History and political science, and I have worked with basic reading and math skills with New American elementary students in Vermont. During my junior year of college, I spent several months in Cuba, where I tutored both elementary school students and adults in English. I know what it's like to feel inadequate in the classroom. I grew up in a high-performing school district where many of my peers were able to excel without putting forth any effort. Meanwhile, I was spending countless hours reading, drilling flash cards, and reworking problems without receiving the same results. School just never came naturally for me, and I often felt incompetent, unmotivated and embarrassed to ask for help. Thankfully, I had wonderful teachers, mentors, and tutors along the way that helped me master the strategies and techniques that worked best for my studies and inspired me to love learning. I became increasingly confident throughout the years, eventually earning a spot at my dream college and currently pursuing a career that I'm truly passionate about.I now wish to pay it forward and be a positive influence for the students that are frustrated in school. Based on my own experiences, I recognize how important it is to form a relationship with the student to where they are comfortable with seeking assistance and communicating their feelings and frustrations with me. Once a rapport is established, I'm able to identify the students' disconnects and convey the confusing concept or strategy in a new and understandable way. My goal is to help students develop a love of learning, and I seek to achieve that by inspiring motivation and confidence both inside and outside of the classroom.

I am great with any type of standardized testing: specifically, SAT, SAT II on Math 1 and 2, and HSPT. I genuinely love tutoring these subjects as well as math and writing. I have extensive, practical experience in applying writing to the working world. During my academic career I was recognized with several awards, fellowships, and scholarships that acknowledged my achievement and dedication.But it was not always so.Truth be told, I struggled greatly through high school. This path taught me, on a personal level, that not every student learns the same way. Therefore, my approach to teaching and tutoring is centered around uncovering the unique challenges each student faces, and then helping them build a set of tools that will empower them to learn in any environment, whether that's high school, college, or the workplace.

Originally from Manassas, I graduated from the University of Mary Washington, first with my bachelor's degree in English, and then with my master's in education. I have taught reading intervention and seen many of my students make enormous gains. I am in the process of being certified in the Wilson System of reading, which is a rigorous and research based intervention for students of all ages. I am a recent Hunter College undergrad (majored in Neuroscience) working as a Biology and Chemistry teacher at Lower Manhattan Art Academy (a Title 1 school) during the day and tutoring in the evening. I have been tutoring since high school in all subjects, and more recently, college students in Statistics and high school juniors in SAT prep. I also spent this last winter abroad in Ecuador teaching high school students the English language. I have an extra close connection with middle and high school students as I have two brothers in those grades and through my other previous/current experiences. I volunteer with the Red Cross where I am a part of the PillowCase seminars where I go into middle school classes and stress the importance of fire safety. I also volunteer with Peer Health Exchange, an organization that delivers 9th graders health seminars to those that may not receive health class in high school. Lastly, I volunteered at Rockefeller University Science OutReach Lab where I instruct middle/high school students basic science laboratory techniques and share some of my college experience. As a tutor it is really important to not think that just because one method works for one kid that it will automatically work with another. It is my job to make whatever the student is struggling with personal or stated in a way that makes it click. I went to the University of Central Florida and majored in Sociology focusing on youth. I started out volunteering with an organization called Youth for Christ and discovered that working with youth is what brings me the most joy. When an opportunity to volunteer teaching students who had been in trouble with the law came up I jumped on it. These kids required me to not only help the students understand a specific concept but to help them to see the value in understanding the concepts at all. I fell in love with tutoring through that organization because when students struggle with school they will often unknowingly feel a sense of shame that goes pretty deep, when they are able to finally understand what they are struggling with it helps to build their grades as well as their confidence. I love getting to be the person who helps them feel that sense of accomplishment.
